Whee.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

I like how John Waters is just tucked in there.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

Awesome headliners and just the total dregs of indie rock

miley stylus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

Thom Yorke????

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

In a week that'll change to:

Nah! Jack Johnson. LOL.

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

Sly and the Family Stone

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

is the poster Coachella's way of asking Thom Yorke if he'd like to play? ???

tylerw, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

Forget the "????" They're missing the exclamation marks on Gil! Scott! Heron!

weird et al (fucking in the streets), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

i think it's been mentioned somewhere else on this board ... but Muse? Are they really that popular?

tylerw, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

welcome to englande

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:43 (sixteen years ago)

Coachella, Lancashire

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:43 (sixteen years ago)

i remember muse being hella popular in LA

max, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

The misty moors of palm springs ...
just saw that grace jones is playing. that's interesting.

tylerw, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

i didn't get into the other thread, but Muse is incredibly popular with the type of ppl that don't post on ILX

miley stylus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:50 (sixteen years ago)

they're kind of an enormous cult band in that huge, huge, huge arena where Tool fans and Radiohead fans collide

miley stylus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

every single british female between the ages of 14 and 28 is by law a muse fan

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

xpost -- And yet, despite being a fan of both those bands you invoke, I find Muse utterly useless.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:52 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, ned, i don't know if you've been to a Radiohead or Tool show, but not every single person in ENORMOUS STADIUMS that they play are cool indie types that read Hipster Runoff

miley stylus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

and they're pretty popular with the over-30s, especially for a 'new' band (i.e. formed after 1995)

I'd say there are PLENTY of Muse fans who aren't Tool fans. There's a sort of pop-metal demographic (which also includes the surprisingly-huge Biffy Clyro) that swallows people up like grains of salt. Radiohead's probably the biggest overlap, but I genuinely think Muse has more fans these days.

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

Muse is incredibly popular with the type of ppl that don't post on ILX

And me. Didn't love the new one, but the last two (and the live album) were fucking great.

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

But as I posted on Twitter, I might consider going to Coachella if it was a five block walk from my apartment, but across the country? In the desert? With thousands of the kind of people who willingly spend three days in the desert just to hear bands play? Fuck no.

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

miley stylus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:03 (sixteen years ago)

I've pretty much seen all the bands on that list that I wanted to see this year, but I'll still probably check out the pre-coachella shows that ppl do. Maybe Yorke'll play the echoplex again.

super sexy psycho fantasy world (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

I mentioned this on another thread where we talked about the baffling U.S. popularity of Muse, but they headlined one night of Lollapalooza several years ago against Interpol and drew a tremendously large crowd. I was very, very surprised.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe Yorke?????'ll play the echoplex again.

it took me about 5 years to realise Biffy Clyro weren't American

hate that Flea has started calling himself "?????" -- so pretentious!

kinda like the deftones

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

but they don't sound like the deftones, though, right? I think of them as being watered down Coldplay. Or maybe watered up i don't know.

tylerw, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

lots of re-purposed burning man art

pavement are touring??!??!? so weird having them away for the last 10 years as so much of the indie world turned into them.

counter-clockwise (lukas), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

I'd say that the Muse fanbase overlaps with a good portion of the Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon ones.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

also it is criminal that Sly and the Family Stone are billed so far down.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

If the odds of them showing up get better than 20 to 1, they'll move up the bill.

What the...

Oh, and what about those question marks on Sunday's text in the concert poster below? No, that isn't saving a spot for a Smiths reunion or U2 debut on the Coachella stage, it's the way that Yorke presents himself as a solo star, the marquee at his Orpheum concert had the same punctuational flourish.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

Thom Yorke and the Mysterians

tylerw, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

Are Devo still amazing live?

Assuming they are, and assuming Sly shows up and maintains coherency, I would go for them and to see Dave Grohl play drums.. and that's pretty much it. (I'm already seeing Pavement in September.)

"Shitty" version wins.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:04 (sixteen years ago)

Devo still rule live. A huge amount.

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:11 (sixteen years ago)

No interest in the headliners, but lots of great acts. I imagine there will be some good dj sets at the parties. I'm not even sure I'll go to the show!

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

And wondering about ????. Best case 'Tron' soundtrack premiere?

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:31 (sixteen years ago)

Enthusiastically seconding this.

yeah at one point mothersbaugh jumped into the crowd and started throwing people around at a recent show, and this is aside from all the awesome formations they dance in and the general tightness of the band

super sexy psycho fantasy world (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:45 (sixteen years ago)

I remember on the drive to coachella (in '04) somewhere around Cabazon, there was a car full of girls with "MUSE OR BUST" painted in big white letters on the back window of their sedan. I was baffled. Somehow that still stuck with me.

van smack, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

Now i've never been, but i just cannot imagine being at a festival where you couldn't drink whilst watching the bands. Yes it makes me sound like a stereotypical drunken britisher, but i just can't imagine it. plus the intense heat + huge crowds + slightly shitty parts of the line-up etc makes it sound like a hellhole. but i'm probably wrong?

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 01:25 (sixteen years ago)

Oh http://www.urb.com/2010/01/19/thom-yorkes-explained

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 02:30 (sixteen years ago)

joey waronker will always be the dude from walt mink to me

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 02:32 (sixteen years ago)

That band consisted of Flea, Nigel Godrich, Beck drummer Joey Waronker and David Byrne collaborator Joey Waronker.

I like the thought of two Joey Waronkers in the band. I'm guessing the second reference is supposed to mean Mauro Refosco.

pretending you 're a Muse fan when you talk to the girls is the "ah I love Jeff Buckley" imo.

one month passes...

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2010/03/pavement-adds-precoachella-gig.html

Pavement will play the Fox Theatre in Pomona on April 15, on the eve of Coachella. Tickets go on sale March 27 at 10 a.m., and will run $41, not including various Ticketmaster surcharges.

SOLD OUT!

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2010/04/coachella-threeday-passes-officially-sold-out.html

April 12, 2010 | 5:39 pm

What recession? What industry slump? Festival fatigue? Pshaw. Word on the Ticketmaster site is that the Coachella three-day passes -- the only option for attending this year, because Goldenvoice opted against selling single-day passes -- are gone. The evidence is the big banner atop the Ticktetmaster sales page: Coachella Festival: 3 Day Pass - *Sold Out.* We just spoke to our Coachella people, and they're making calls to get official confirmation. We'll update when we get word.

At bonnaroo they had Grizzly Bear vs Yeah Yeah Yeahs vs Santogold. I ended up watching King Sunny Ade with like 300-400 ppl and it was awesome.
