Don't know where else to put this, so I'm starting a new thread for Twitter rock criticism-related stuff, which admittedly is really esoteric thread to start. But!
"Twitter In The Raw": Announcing The (Possible) Existence Of The @1000TimesYes 2009 Tweet Boxhttp://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/archives/2010/01/twitter_in_the.php
From the Kickstarter page:
At the end of 2009 Weingarten set out to collaborate on a book version of the Twitter reviews with us here at Article, a music, zine, T-shirt and art group also out of Brooklyn. The resulting book is not really a book at all. It is a physical representation of Twitter. Twitter in the raw. Each of Weingarten's 1,000 tweet reviews from 2009 will be individually typed out on to a single index card and the mass of them will be held together in a wonderful natural oak index card catalog.
i'm definitely thinking of buying one of these.
― kshighway (ksh), Friday, 22 January 2010 00:17 (sixteen years ago)
alrighty, i just pledged. bought the first box. can't wait!
― kshighway (ksh), Friday, 22 January 2010 00:52 (sixteen years ago)
would TOTALLY pledge if it was, say, $25 and not $75. Not that I think it's overpriced, per se. I'm just underfunded.

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 22 January 2010 03:43 (sixteen years ago)
You're going to call people on the phone for $9? I'd be interested in buying a cd compilation of these calls.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 22 January 2010 03:46 (sixteen years ago)
How much for a phone call of Ned Raggett reading Whiney's tweets?
― innocent snack attack victim (sic), Friday, 22 January 2010 03:54 (sixteen years ago)
haha this is amazing
tempted to spring for the call
― I'm FINNISH!!!! (s1ocki), Friday, 22 January 2010 04:23 (sixteen years ago)
...hmm. Now that you mention it...
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 January 2010 04:24 (sixteen years ago)
I mean the phone call thing is just a cute way to help raise money for the boxes which are actually really costly and insane.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 22 January 2010 04:49 (sixteen years ago)
Totally not trying to be a dick here at all, but how about something that pledges any money above and beyond the costs (if there is any) is to be donated to Haitian relief or something? I mean, its a very cool idea, but it ultimately feels kind of insular and it might be a chance to raise some money for charity. Just tossing out the thought. Maybe there is zero chance of any "above and beyond" money anyway.

i mean, i'll let you guys know if i make any money. I really doubt it since hiring typists is hella expensive and 1000 cards is a big number

i will type some cards if you want--i also own a typewriter. totally serious.

― the BIG MAN from the hilarious "Alan McGee" tweets (DJ Mencap), Friday, 22 January 2010 16:05 (sixteen years ago)
really don't get your point, jon — because not everyone in the world is getting paid to write and haiti is suffering, whiney shouldn't be hypothetically paid some small sum for a year of hard work? are you against anyone making money from their work as long as there is suffering in the world, or just whiney?
― I'm FINNISH!!!! (s1ocki), Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:07 (sixteen years ago)
don't mean to seem mad at u, it just gets me heated when people devalue writing work—it's already so fuckin' hard to get paid to write anything these days

― ben bernankles (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 03:28 (fifteen years ago)
Sorry s1ocki, I didn't see your posts before now! As someone who does enjoy getting paid for a my time and effort, I certainly didn't intend to devalue what Whiney has done. Hell, I checked his tweets about as much as anyone else. I'm having a difficult time trying to explain why this rubs me the wrong way, but I think it comes down to me feeling that while, yes I would love to see Whiney make money for his effort, I'd have rather seen it via something like maybe a Paypal link while the project was going on. This self-promotion at the end just feels too self-congratulatory and insular.
I certainly wasn't intending to take away from his work and I hope I didn't cause offense. Obviously how I feel means nothing, because there are people willing to pay for it. So, yeah, feel free to hate away... but please don't think I'm trying to devalue his hard work. But a lot of people start ambitious blogs up each and every day with no hope of making money, they just do it because they want to.

this sounds a lot like you're devaluing hard work here
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 26 January 2010 03:49 (fifteen years ago)
How do you get that? I was just commenting that not every blog founder is looking for money. If they can find a paying audience, awesome! I mean that sincerely. And I think its great that Whiney is making money off of this. I just think the method is a little too self-congratulatory for my taste.
I mean, look, if the Musicophilia guy or awesome tapes from africa dude (to name two examples) put up PayPal links for donations, I'd definitely be all about tossing a couple bucks their way - but I wouldn't buy their entries typed on a piece of paper and put into a fancy box either.

― you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 04:14 (fifteen years ago)
nah jon, don't worry. the "errant paypal donations box lingering on the blog" always kind of rubbed me the wrong way for the very same reasons you're decrying my tweet box.
but i think the logistics of the project should make it clear that this is less about "cashing in on tweets" and more about "making an art object."
Article Magazine is a fan and friend and contacted me about collecting my tweets into a book. it started as a simple book but then it got grander and grander until was this fancy, expensive box. i'll be very upfront if I somehow end up making money on this, but it doesn't look likely.
I would like to some day turn twit-crit into something marketable, but this isn't it

Journalists these days are told that they have to be good at a lot of things: they have to produce for multiple platforms; they have to push their personal brand; they have to do more with less. As much as anybody else in the business, Weingarten has taken that advice to heart. When he’s not reviewing new records on Twitter—he did 1,000 tweet-reviews last year, all of them 140 characters or less—he’s writing slightly longer ones for outlets like Fuse, The Village Voice, and Rollingstone.com. He’s extremely active on the ILXOR music message board, where he goes by the name “Whiney G. Weingarten.” He wrote the cover story for the March/April issue of Revolver, a eleven-page history of hard-rock tattoos. His book about Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back was recently released by Continuum, as part of its 33 1/3 series of books about individual albums. He runs a Web site called Hipster Puppies, featuring photographs of dogs dressed in horn-rimmed glasses and hooded sweatshirts. The “bio” section of his Twitter page reads “Christopher R. Weingarten // Last Rock Critic Standing.”
