Dance music with vocals = BEST MUSIC EVAH

Well, probably not but I've recently been hearing some mindblowing dancepop epics and I'm yearning for more. Think KLF's main singles (America:What time is love; Last train to transcentral; Justified and Ancient), theme from S Express, etc. Please tell me more. The more over-produced and early 90s the better (vocals are a must).

(feel free to rip the subject line apart and show me how wrong and boorish I am).

"Ride a Rocket" by Lithium with Sonya "Echobelly" Madan on vocals, "Love U More" by Sunscream, "Open Up" by Leftfield with John Lydon on vox, "Crab Louse" by the Lords of Acid

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sci-Fi Paul to thread!

M Matos, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chemical Brothers, "Life Is Sweet". Unless you value some sort of coherency to said vocals. I think Tim Burgess spends half the song stringing random syllables together.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Future Sound Of London's Papau New Guineau is well worth seeking out if you haven't done so already.

Chris Sallis, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to hate "singy techno". Now I love it. Well, some of it. I'll think about it.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some of the early Yazz/Coldcut stuff was great (especially the Coldcut song with Mark E Smith on vocals)

Does anyone remember an early house track by a group called "Gene and Jim are into Shakes" they did one track called "Shake"

Baxter Wingnut, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"40 Miles" by Congress - first dance single I ever bought!

Tom, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone remember an early house track by a group called "Gene and Jim are into Shakes" they did one track called "Shake"
Yes! I love it! Thought I was the only one. I was a sucker for all those '87 house & rap trax that had spoken word samples on them tho' (Coldcut, Steinski & Mass Media et cet).

I'm not sure I completely 'get' the original question, but I suspect that "Ride on Time" by Black Box will do you nicely. The problem with the equation in the thread title, however, is that it overlooks Ian van Dahl.

Jeff W, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ministry Of Sound's new Fischerspooner disc is the best so far this year in the category.

maria, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, there's the rather very poppy Euro-Trance thing (Ian Van Dahl, Lasgo, Sylver, Adrima), or the slight more interesting "last year's instrumental club hit + added vocals for the charts" phenomenon: Rank 1 vs Kylie Minogue "True Love Never Dies", Riva vs Danii Minogue "Who Do You Love Now?", The Mystery "All I Ever Wanted", Perpetual Dreamer "Dust.Wav", Angelic "Can't Keep Me Silent", Marc & Claude "Tremble", WIP ft Emmie "I Won't Let You Down", 4 Strings "Take Me Away", Madelyne "Beautiful Child". Cosmic Gate's "Back To Earth" has some pretty great spoken female vocals too...but that's more in the direction of "proper" vocal trance and not very bubblegum/pop-esque.

And of course the biggest smasher of them all: Snap vs Plaything "Do You See The Light 2002".

Siegbran Hetteson, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Way Out West's 'Mind Circus' is a fantastic track, as is Beber and Tamra's 'Travelling On' which has beautiful, sad lyrics and a very conventional verse chorus structure despite whopping amounts of breakbeat.

Anna, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Recent hit but ever-so-good: Shakedown's "At Night". Old stuff: Technotronic - "Pump Up The Jam"
C&C Music Factory - "Gonna Make You Sweat" or "Here We Go (Let's Rock & Roll)", which I recently realised is a totally audacious hip-house-rock threeway)
Todd Terry - "Something's Going On (In Your Soul)"
Rozalla - "Everybody's Free"
Urban Cookie Collective - "The Key, The Secret"
Snap - "Rhythm Is A Dancer"
Baby D - "Let Me Be Your Fantasy"
Orbital - "Halcyon"
N'Trance - "Set You Free" (an awesome track that almost makes up for their subsequent crimes)

Tim, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, the subject line is 100% true. With the possible exception of the Beach Boys.

Suggestions:

Chemical Bros.: Rendezvous

Sandy B: Make the World Go Round

Robin S: Give Me Love (Unless I've got the title wrong)

I suppose Tori Amos' 'Professional Widow' (Armand's Star Trunk Funkin' Mix, IIRR) doesn't count as having a vocal? Or does it?

Doubtless countless more e.g.s I could give you were I at home rather than work.

Tim Bateman, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chemical Bros.: Rendezvous
Say what? Don't you mean that other crazy Astralwerks duo, Basement Jaxx?

Nate Patrin, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Agent Sumo-Why is the best old skool type thing I've heard this year.

As regards actual old stuff I'd have to saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay hmmmmmmmm, aha Bedrock-For What You Dream Of, seriously a must have in this category.

Ronan, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there can be only one

love and happiness - M.A.W.

born clippy, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Chemical Bros.: Rendezvous Say what? Don't you mean that other crazy Astralwerks duo, Basement Jaxx?'

I was wondering who would spot that one first. Well done, Pike!

Tim Bateman, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

While we're in the Corrections Dept., it's 'SHOW Me Love' by Robin S.

If I Remember Rightly...

Tim Bateman, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Show Me Love" is MASSIV and WUNNERFUL. But don't sleep on my girl CeCe Peniston!

Dan Perry, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Baby if you want meeeeeee you've got to show me love? That one?

Ronan, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YES! With that lovely synth riff rolling all through the background... mmmmm.

Dan Perry, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone know Punchinella (sp?) by San Tranceisco? I remember being at an old skool night and this cheesey but wicked thing came on and some guy beside me told me what it was. I can't remember how it goes though or anything about it, anyone know?

Ronan, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah right, I'm getting the idea now. How about:

Blue Pearl - 'Naked In The Rain'

Berri - Sunshine After The Rain

I'm sure there's another weather-related one that goes with these two...

Jeff W, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Vaiio - Rapture, pure sex.

Chris, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry Michaelangelo, this theme is too close to a thread I've wanted to start for ages and will when I've got time and haf rezearched enuff...

Paul, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another vote for Way Out West "Mindcircus", in particular the Gabriel & Dresden Mix. And of course the current Paul Oakenfold "Southern Sun" single.

Siegbran Hetteson, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jan Johnston - Flesh

Siegbran Hetteson, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha, just thought of all those cheesy vocoder Italo tracks:

Prezioso - Let's Talk About A Man
Prezioso - Let Me Stay
Prezioso - Voices
Gigi d'Agostino - La Passion
Daddy DJ - Daddy DJ
Eiffel 65 - Blue
Eiffel 65/Kim Lucas - All I Really Want

Siegbran Hetteson, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The mid 90s was a fertile period for this sort of thing, way over the top production building like a skyscraper with a no holds barred female vocal. Off the top of my head I can think of "Dreamer" by Living Joy, "Can't Get A Man..." by Sister Bliss and, the masterpiece of the genre, the OT Quartet's "Hold That Sucker Down". There are loads of others, Rollo and Sister Bliss used to knock this sort of thing out in their sleep.

And "Show Me Love", oh yes. I recently got the first two Back To Love compilations and they're chock full of this sort of stuff - Alison Limerick "Where Love Lives", Phase II "Reachin'", Kariya "Let Me Love You For Tonight", Ralph Rosario "You Used To Hold Me", Frankie Knuckles "Tears", The Source with Candi Staton "You've Got The Love", and I've barely started. "Real Love", "Back To Life", "Apparently Nothin'", "Someday", "That's The Way Love Is", and from the old old school "Let No Man Put Asunder", "I Believe In Miracles" and "Going Back To My Roots".

Thinking about it, you're right. BEST MUSIC EVAH.

Mike Ratford, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeff W, is the last of the weather trilogy "Sunshine On a Rainy Day" by Zoe?

And another vote for "Mindcircus", nowhere near enough people are into Way Out West.

Mike Ratford, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe no one's mentioned "More and More" by Captain Hollywood Project yet! Or "I'm Gonna Get You" by Bizarre Inc! Ah, 1993 was such a fantastic year...

Dan Perry, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

talk of young disciples reminds me that the better of the singles was the *other* one. what was it called again 'let yourself get down' ? anyway the one with the '...gang called the disciples' prince sample. ace it was.

ooh 'gypsy woman' can't forget that. s'express' 1st album full of similar too.

piscesboy, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for the recommendations - some superb songs in there. I think 'Set you free' could be the most important song I've heard in months, amazing track.

I'm really new to this style of music but I'd like to learn more, can someone point me toward some quality reading material on the web about this scene (was it a 'scene'? if so, what was it called?) in ILM, Freakytrigger, Tangents, etc?

Ian, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

was it a 'scene'?

Not really 'a scene', most of the stuff was made for the pop market which doesn't really involve 'scenes' (is there a "Whitney Houston scene?" or a "S Club 7 scene"?). Most of it (the Eurodance stuff of the early 90s) just revolved around production teams all over Europe: Rollo in Britain, the BXR team in Italy (Cappella), the Wilde/De Coster team in Belgium (2 Unlimited), Nosie Katzmann in Germany (Culture Beat, Captain Hollywood Project), Ruud van Reijen (Twenty 4 Seven), etc etc.

Siegbran Hetteson, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, 'scene' is the wrong term, but what is IT? What's the style? How could you sum up all these songs in one catchy term? Is it house, trance, eurobeat or all of the above? I repeat, I'm a complete amateur in this, but I'm finding it fascinating. How does a dance hit (ie. the Spiller track) become a word-conquering anthem? Has anyone ever written about this whole business in detail? (surely, it doesn't work like Drummond/Cauty told me in The Manual?).

Ian, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How could you sum up all these songs in one catchy term?

The term "Eurodance" pretty much sums it up, in the sense that everyone will know what you're talking about. Trance is not really appropriate because it a) generally does not contain vocals, and b) is rarely found unmixed as a chart hit (apart from proverbial exceptions of course). House idem dito.

Siegbran Hetteson, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 01:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Props to me for mentioning the Sumo Bass remix of Why by Agent Sumo earlier in this thread, haha, I couldn't think of anything now but let me tell you that track is absolutely great, screaming diva madness with a really old style house beat behind it. Be sure not to download the original mix cos it's very very different and very very bad.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

i picked up s' xpress' "hey music lover" from a secondhand shop yesterday and it still sounds completely ace.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh i like it?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

you like "hey music lover" or is this the obligatory jonny l praise?

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

the latter...

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Be sure not to download the original mix cos it's very very different and very very bad.

Hold on, the original is great too! Classic Agent Sumo filterdisco.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The "original" I heard was like really slow and dull, not dance at all, just sounded like the bass remix with all the sting taken out of it and no electronic effects whatsoever, all done at half the speed. Maybe this is a different mix.

What are they up to now? 24 Hours was one of last years best aswell.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)
