Now, the Brits did choose an OK song last year, and did the best UK performance for years. But if the Brits want a winner, it's safer to be able to choose between a number of song rather than already deciding the song. The same concept as last year probably means a great and charismatic singer will be chosen, but even a great artist cannot do wonders if the song doesn't hold up.

one month passes...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/eurovision/contestants/ycny_2010/index.shtml

They've dispensed with the idea that "any member of the public can enter" - as indeed they did last year - and have jumped straight to "here's four stage school kids/musical theatre performers, a group of stage school kids/musical theatre performers, and a group who didn't get past the open auditions on last year's X Factor".

Bring back the fruit eating bears!

Mark G, Saturday, 6 March 2010 10:28 (fifteen years ago)

Bring back anyone that people outside the UK have heard of. Or failing that, anyone that people in the UK have heard of. It's something when I find myself getting nostalgic for that year when the BBC got Justin from The Darkness as a SFE/YCNY contestant.

Well, A1 did participate in the Norwegian final. They only ended second though.....

Tomorrow!

Anyway, the competition is weak this year. Best so far are the lyrical genius of Romania and the sweet embraces of Russia:

I was pretty disappointed the Finnish voters chose some mediocre folk tune over these guys:

Seriously, wtf is it with all five UK contestants singing flat?

Oops forgot about Miss Fitz.

...and actually I thought they were the best of the six. Considering that they didn't even get through to the Boot Camp stage of X Factor last year, that puts the others in a poor light.

bit saddened to turn on my laptop and not find swygart doing this on here :-(

I thought Miss Fitz were the best of the initial six. Out of the final three, based on the dreadful song (which isn't even stuck in my head after three repetitions of it, FAIL PETE WATERMAN), I think I'd go for Alexis. It's somehow, for reasons I can't quite qualify, fixed that it's going to be Josh, even though he's fucking rubbish.

I'm Twuntering. This is worse than last year. Much worse. Our winner smiles like Richard Kiel.

William Bloody Swygart, Friday, 12 March 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

hello!

ailsa, Friday, 12 March 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

(have just found you on twitter)

I'd like Esma to win this, but she fluffed the lyrics so maybe the GBP won't vote for her. Meanwhile, here's last years winner, who is surely "cursed" (doyousee???) to perform this song and this song only for the rest of his career.

Oh wow, look, we're going to come last.

ailsa, Friday, 12 March 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

And deservedly so.

also, that bit that threatens to turn into Kids In America, then doesn't, is a fucking slap in the face.

ailsa, Friday, 12 March 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

(xpost) Unless for some reason every other country sends a cheap wedding singer as well, then the odds will be even.

might seem normal but is actually (snoball), Friday, 12 March 2010 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

(xpost) I was thinking that too - Kim Wilde's KIA crossed with Cliff's "Wired For Sound", only with a shite chorus that no-one can remember. No wonder Esma forgot the words.

WTF was with the backing singers from the UK singing flat? They can't even get that right!
