am0n, do you know who this guy is?
This month we welcome back one of Baltimore's heaviest selektas, Mister (to you) John Knott, for another shot at the Soundclash helm. We like John, it's just that simple. The man's got tunes. For you, even.
He's dj'ing at Soundclash at the Marx Cafe on Friday

So what you think of the new Busy Signal?
― Pete Scholtes, Sunday, 25 July 2010 03:33 (fifteen years ago)
I'll say, I really like it. I know it's full of singles that are probably old news to you guys, but they're new to me. Really love: "How U Bad So," "Picante," "My Money (Money Tree)"; the covers of "Nightshift" and "one More Night" (and never liked the Phil Collins original); and the a capella (!) closer "Nuh Boy Caan Buy Wi Out."
I like or can tolerate enough of the rest ("Busy Latino" is a hoot; basically a talk-over record of a merengue hit) that I can already put this in year-end consideration (actually, six songs is my threshold). I'll post my review, which I rarely do here, but there are so few out there! Dancehall gets so little respect that I guess I can understand the backlash against Major Lazer, though I like some of that as well (though not the new one with Busy Signal/M.I.A.). Wish I'd gotten this into Spin.
Catching up on his old stuff was also fun: "These Are the Days" is amazing. I'd play it between Nas's "One Mic" and Atmosphere's "Scapegoat," or maybe "Lose Yourself" if I liked that song.

Old, I realize! Just classic though... Does anyone in dancehall have his vocal range?

Signal who’s been in the game for quite some time doesn’t plan on going out like other notable dancehall artists like Shabbar Ranks and Buju Banton. "I've learned from their mistakes. I try to think outside the box, beyond Jamaica. I mean, we sing gun lyrics here, and burn fire on this and burn fire on that, but that won't bring you to the level that you need to go. I've seen this over and over again with artists from Jamaica. You sing those songs locally, people go crazy, but at the end of the day that won't bring you to the wide level of exposure cause you're probably lashing out against those that would be accepting you."

i didn't see any of the busy talk here at the time - i think d.o.b. is a really strong album. i was already familiar with many of its best tracks but "picante", "how yuh bad so" and "summn a guh gwaan" are soooo good. "hair dresser shop" is another fav.
anyway just came in here give an OMG heads up for natalie storm's new mixtape, which is called - yes! - songs 2 fuck and fight 2 - http://www.theheatwave.co.uk/blog/item/natalie-storm-songs-2-fuck-and-fight-2/
