The Tommy Westphall Universe Hypothesis (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno, I've only heard the first, but "Kiss You Back" is the underratedest single of the 90s imo

well this should be a crushing win

I expect J0hn to show up with a spirited defense of Sons of the P...

The Tommy Westphall Universe Hypothesis (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

the only weak ones imho are the last two, and even those have their moments (esp Humpty/Biz Markie duet "the Odd Couple" on Who Got the Gravy)

The Tommy Westphall Universe Hypothesis (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

What? I didn't even know they made another album after Sex Packets, much less enough to stretch them out to 1999.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 23:18 (sixteen years ago)

Sons of the P is reaaaaaallly great, super-cohesive as an album, I think its where they really nailed down a signature sound. Body Hats has great stuff on it but is bloated with filler.

The Tommy Westphall Universe Hypothesis (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

They're pretty unimpeachable those first few years. As Shakey said, Body Hats has some high points but isn't up there with the first two and the EP. The debut was huge in my life, but Sons of the P is nearly as good.

Never heard the later stuff.

Future Rhythm is actually really really good, has none of the problems of Body Hats and is still high-concept, funny, unique/consistent sound, etc. I happened to run into Shock at an Aceyalone show the same night I bought the CD and got his autograph on it. the one and only time I've ever asked anybody to autograph anything, and I only did it cuz it was such a weird coincidence... anyway yeah its good. the single w/the Luniz was a huge local hit

you rang?

yeah that's my favorite. I also love "Fear of a Mixed Planet," the Shock G post-lost-years album - so good. But Sons of the P., fuck man that thing straight up changed my life - stayed on repeat in my VW's tape deck blowing my mind all semester. "Good Thing We're Rapping" is some of the most brilliant storytelling I've ever heard.

A personally selected best of would be best but Body-Hat stays dense/weird the longest so that. And yeah "Wind Me Up" is craaaaaaazy classic. How did that not dominate radio? Was the world over P-Funkerie by 1998?
