In the beginning I played Sophtware Slump a LOT. Then one day i realized it was quite irritating, actually, and haven't played it since.. Am I wrong?

No, you are right - it's the most irritating release of pap within recent memory.

His voice just ruins it for me...that really irritating faux-naive Neil Young-ish mewl. Same goes for Built to Spill.

I quite like them actually, although they do have rather worrying prog rock tendencies.

Well, I've never actually heard the album but I did see them live by accident a couple of years ago and they bored the crap out of me.

Two years ago I liked them hugely (on record, they are dull live). Most of the reasons I like them are the same as why people here hate them – I like the proginess, and Jason Little’s voice astounds me every time. I even like the beards and with the Beta Band they make the case that beards are now essential. I wouldn’t start with the latest album – go back to the early EP collection (Broken down Comforter). Since no-one seems to like them here I don’t feel much inclination to say any more!

Oh.. but I do have Broken Down, and there are some really nice songs there (and teeerrible ones), and Under the Western Freeway is sooo beuatiful, but I have some problems with Slump..although I can play Hewlett's Daughter for days without getting bored.. :) It's the most of the rest of the album that bothers me..

Can you explain why?

four months pass...
Holy crap, no defenders in this thread yet? *rolls up sleeves* Grandaddy are one of the best new American bands of the last ten years. Jason Lytle is a damn fine vocalist, and his goofy bored-suburbian lyrics are as strangely affecting as Malkmus's are entertaining. Their music can be achingly beautiful, especially "So You'll Aim Toward The Sky" and "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot." "The Sophtware Slump" _is_ the place to start, it's really superb, and if it's their "The Bends," I can't wait to hear what they cook up next. Blah, blah, blah, gush, gush gush. Make up your own mind but I think they're fab.
