Out May 4. P4k reports & interviews Kevin Drew: http://pitchfork.com/news/37747-kevin-drew-reveals-all-about-new-broken-social-scene-album/

This time, the album was written and arranged by a core six-piece (pictured), including singer-guitarist Kevin Drew, singer-bassist Brendan Canning, drummer Justin Peroff, guitarist Charles Spearin, and singer-guitarist Andrew Whiteman, along with relative newcomer Sam Goldberg on (what else?) guitar.

Feist, Emily Haines, and others guest. John McEntire produced.

kshighway (ksh), Monday, 1 February 2010 15:02 (fifteen years ago)

There was a time I appreciated John McEntire being behind the boards in the studio, but now all his records just make me sleepy. I'm not even a big BSS fan in the first place, so this has disaster written all over it (for me).

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 February 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

It can't be worse than their last record, which was an overproduced mess.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 1 February 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

Was that the s/t one? I loved that album.

dog latin, Monday, 1 February 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

^yeah I loved them both. But I like that sort of 'overproduced' sound.

sofatruck, Monday, 1 February 2010 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

Mr. Que, Friday, 19 February 2010 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

They have a new album coming out! Someone should start a thread.

Evan, Saturday, 20 February 2010 01:22 (fifteen years ago)

definitely glad they've got a different producer on this one.

Jamie_ATP, Saturday, 20 February 2010 01:43 (fifteen years ago)

this thread is good, but i feel as though a new one is needed.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 20 February 2010 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe we should start a thread to talk about starting a poll to see how many more threads we need.

no way that is ever going to happen.

tylerw, Monday, 3 May 2010 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

tyler is right. i'm guessing, at best, a 6.1. and i'm quite sure of that.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 3 May 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

ksh, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

album art v much in character

waka khan (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

first listen, nothing really grabbed me beyond "World Sick"--which i'd already heard a bunch of times before today--but as usual i'm sitting in front of the computer half-listening & multitasking, so it'll take a bunch of listens before i can really say whether i actually like this or not

ksh, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

also, i got some free EP--Lo-Fi For The Dividing Lights--when i bought the CD at my local record store earlier today. no idea how long that'll be packaged w/ the LP for

ksh, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

ah man don't--first listens multitasking while on the computer is my worst habit wrt music listening, hate myself every time i do it. make yourself a cup of tea and play that album on some speakers and relax on a sofa, dude.

waka khan (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

couldn't agree with you more -- i really need to stop doing 99% of my music listening while sitting here, half-paying attention

ksh, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

"Sweetest Kill" is fantastic. No firm opinion on the rest of the record thus far.

ksh, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

It's in the vocals.

Those two live in their own little world.

Evan, Thursday, 6 May 2010 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't mean that comparison as an insult to you two, just totally reminded me of a back and forth they would engage in.

yeah, no problem!

man, i used to listen to (parts of, at least) the Sound Opinions podcast here and there a few years back. it was enjoyable enough

and i also, of course, read Kot's Wilco biography . . . in 2005, i think ;-)

My favorite touch is the "rock record review" header.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 7 May 2010 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

The music on "Chase Scene" actually sounds kinda like Tortoise. Also, the song w/ Sam Prekop - it's a little funny to hear him do the exact same vocal delivery he always does, only with a rockin' band underneath him instead of the usual breeze.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Friday, 7 May 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

re the MPP comparison... don't hear it at all, other than the ill-advised My Girls-like "Woo!" in "Texico Bitches."

scott pgwp (pgwp), Friday, 7 May 2010 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think they are "shamelessly aping" Pavement. They have been pretty unabashed in their love for Pavement for the last few years. If anything, Water in Hell is an homage.

Benjamin-, Friday, 7 May 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

"shamelessly aping" or "a homage," song is still unlistenable

ksh, Friday, 7 May 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

indie rock broke me in 2k10

ksh, Saturday, 8 May 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

Oh come on. You're just upset that a band you love released a sub-par album.

Benjamin-, Saturday, 8 May 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

i'm finding it increasingly difficult to muster up any interest in indie rock this year -- what would you recommend i check out? what 2010 indie records have you been enjoying?

ksh, Saturday, 8 May 2010 01:49 (fifteen years ago)

There is always indie rock from 1992 - 1996! Most of my favorite albums ever came out then.

As far as 2010... The Tallest Man On Earth! First album was my favorite of 2008, and the new is just as incredible. But thats not really "indie rock." Also, that Radio Dept. album sounded nice, but I've only heard a few songs so far.

Evan, Saturday, 8 May 2010 04:06 (fifteen years ago)

thanks dude, i'll check both of those out!

ksh, Saturday, 8 May 2010 14:13 (fifteen years ago)

ksh are you a graphic designer? You could've done Pitchfork parodies for Idolator in the olden days.

ksh, Saturday, 8 May 2010 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

actually, i only had to modify the HTML to make that BSS "review" above

ksh, Saturday, 8 May 2010 14:19 (fifteen years ago)
