a thread for ANNY CELSI, who makes great JANGLE-FOLKY POWER POP type stuff and should be at least as famous as, i don't know, neko case or whoever

i just recently discovered her latest album

which definitely would have been in my '09 top 10 if i'd heard it earlier. she has some of that same noir-pop vibe as neko or kelly hogan, but with really sweet melodies and harmonies of a kind that neko hasn't shown that much interest in lately. also maybe a little reminiscent of amy rigby?

apparently she has at least one earlier album too, but i haven't tracked that down yet. anybody know anything about her? she's based in l.a. i think.

Pretty great track - reminds me of the Monkees, and I mean that as a compliment.

yeah! this is also sort of what i was hoping for from the forthcoming bangles album. but now i don't have to wait for that...

there's a GREAT song on the album called "piece of heaven" that i wish i could link here. but it's on emusic.

My band played a show with her and Nelson last year (been friends with Nelson for awhile, and he's played with The Lovetones, The Quarter After and is part of Brian Wilson's touring band). I like her songs a lot - Bangles/Amy Rigby sound is OTM.

just really liking this album. nice balance of guitar-pop, folkie lilt, piano-horn soul. good lee hazlewood cover. and some of the lyrics really jump out at me. two good story-songs, the one about the mom and kid fleeing a (presumably abusive) husband in the middle of the night, and one about a girlhood crush who ends up getting killed by a jealous lover ("4 in the morning, a body is found/there's always a woman to blame"). she has a really nice, rich voice. the other obvious comparison point for at least some of the songs (thinking "first love freezes" in particular) is aimee mann.
