Where do I even start with this woman? She seems to have a thousand releases. Is there one definitive collection (Queen of Rockabilly)?

All I have ever had is Rockin' With Wanda which is really really great.

Suddenly it's like why don't I have way more.

Can I also say how much I love the cover:

Might be tough to get one collection that covers it all.

She's got a few distinct periods - 50's hiccuppy rockabilly party girl, 60's country crooner, 70's gospel - then a bunch of rockabilly revival records from the 80's on.

50's stuff is most fun - but 60's has some gold too

Queen of Rockabilly is ESSENTIAL. I just bought one of her country albums but haven't listened to it. But "Funnel of Love," yeah, all-time classic awesomeness.

She has a 7" coming out with Jack White or something, I think? I remember the A is going to be a cover of an Amy Winehouse song, the B is a cover of "Shakin' All Over."

Also, check out "Funnel" @33 rpm:

i'm not entirely taken with the a-side but the cover of "shakin' all over" is fantastic.

"Cream Of The Crop" is good for the country stuff. Great song called "A Girl Don't Have To Drink To Have Fun" that I used to put on mix tapes for drunk girls, plus my favourite version of "There Stands The Glass" and a good "Swinging Doors". Not earth-shattering stuff, but definitely worth a listen if you like 60's Tammy and Loretta.

God I'm so loving the rhyme scheme in "Funnel of Love"

I tried and I tried to run and hide /
I even tried to run away-ee-ay-ee-ayy

You expect the second line to rhyme with the first and it doens't and it;s C as fuck.

so glad this isn't another damn RIP thread

my go-to disc is the "Let's Have A Party" 2LP

but now that I try to search for info I think I might have the title wrong, it was a double LP I burned from a friend. I think it was a more recent reissue???

just noticed this yesterday on the piccadilly mailing list. was confused why it was on a dance records website, but apparently she has new stuff produced by jack white

http://www.piccadillyrecords.com/products/WandaJackson-YouKnowImNoGoodShakinAllOver-ThirdManRecords-67303.html

The highly anticipated Jack White-produced single by rock and roll and country singing legend, Wanda Jackson. In an era when rock and roll and rockabilly was dominated by men, Jackson was a groundbreaker who more than held her own with a ripping voice like no other and hard-headed songs about no-nonsense female protagonists. Her career has spanned rockabilly, rock and roll, country and gospel and she's shared stages with all the greats from Elvis Presley to Jerry Lee Lewis. Jackson's first release with Third Man Records has her putting her own distinctive spin on two cover songs, Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" and Johnny Kidd and the Pirates classic rocker "Shakin' All Over".

I just heard "Funnel of Love" for the first time in ages because its on one of the Mississippi Records cassettes, just before an awesome Hasil Adkins tune. Its one of the best songs in all of creation! What a voice!! Her version of "mean mean man" is also a monster.

ImprovSpirit, Thursday, 3 June 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

I hope those MONSTERS paid her. And the estate of Hasil Adkins.

MONSTERS!!!

So in love with her early stuff, Queen of Rockabilly, Rockin' With Wanda, and her self-titled album, which are all classic. What a voice.

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 5 June 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

she was great last night. can still growl and shout. played from like 11:30 to almost 1 a.m. at one point she was talking about elvis and some girl yelled out "did you kiss him?" she just stared and said, "did i KISS him? what planet are you from?"

she allowed that he was "a good kisser" (but said her husband is better, which made everyone go awwwwww....)

I keep missing all her Dc appearances but have heard nothing but favorable comments.

So in love with her early stuff, Queen of Rockabilly, Rockin' With Wanda, and her self-titled album, which are all classic. What a voice.

her very early stuff is great too. her first half dozen or so singles (c. 1954-1956) are straight-up honky-tonk in the style of Kitty Wells or Hank Williams. they aren't as modern or distinctive as her post-fame work, but she def. shows the same intensity and wit that made her a star. even after she crossed over to rockabilly, a lot of her late '50s b-sides continued in the honky-tonk vein (& are collected on the reissues of her s/t and Rockin' with Wanda albums). afaik, those early singles are only available on CD on this compilation unless you're willing to shell out crazy money for her Bear Family box set.

Yeah, I've seen that bear family box set in a local store and its pretty tempting but way overpriced. I don't doubt that it is awesome though.

twelve years pass...

Hearing “Fujiyama Mama” lyrics I thought Japan would have hated and criticized it and it turns out it didn’t chart at all in the US but was a #1 in Japan and she did a tour there after the success. Wtf Japan.

From my Nashville Scene ballots:

Wanda Jackson's frayed, yet unstoppable munchkin splay brings the country out ofThe Party Ain't Over's bobbing New Orleans horns, its rockabilly, Latin, gospel and o yeah, its country songs too (don't ever take for granted that country letter always sounds like country spirit). Producer Jack White couldn't have pulled off if Wanda flagged, but they got it.

For a while, Wanda Jackson's b-sides seemed like they might dropThe Complete Capitol Singlesinto the Other (About Half Good) pen, but they gradually go from maudlin country apologies for being an A-side rockabilly-tonk gal, to moody, full-bodied brooding, while the A-sides are usually A-list treats---more than maybe any female, other than Janis Martin, truly rockabillied, and few enough males did, for sure.

Apple Music has The Capitol Singles 1959-1961 and The Capitol Singles 1967-1968, dunno how those are.

This looks promising, duh, though don't know the label, Acrobat:

The Complete Singles As & Bs 1954-62
Wanda Jackson was a country singer who embraced rockabilly and rock 'n' roll during the 50's to the extent that she earnt the title of "The Queen of Rockabilly", having success across the country, pop and UK charts with a style that often transcended the genres as she made the country and pop charts with hits like "I Gotta Know" and "Right Or Wrong", not to mention her breakthrough UK hits with "Mean Mean Man" and "Let's Have A Party". This great-value 58-track 2-CD set comprises the A and B sides of all her singles on the Decca and Capitol labels from her 1954 debut through to 1962. It naturally features all the hits mentioned above, along with all her other country and pop chart entries from this era, notably her biggest Top 10 country hit "In The Middle Of A Heartache". It provides a thorough trawl across her early career, charting her progression from country cowgirl to rockabilly royalty, and encompassing her primary career as a pop-focused artist, before she turned her attention back to the country scene. It's an entertaining showcase for a highly distinctive talent.

There's also The Complete Decca Recordings and so on.

Sorry, my original Scene ballot comments referred to Omnivore's Best of the Capitol Singles, dunno how The Complete got into that paste???! (btw, Spotify has collections of her Capitol singles year by year by year for quite a few years, also every other original album and collection I've ever heard of, plus.)
