medina's "kun for mig" is the track that sticks out for me. I may love Electrik Red a whole lot more than Medina, but rnb was covered decently on the ilx list. "kun for mig" is the kind of one hit wonder created in an alignment of the star where everything fits and a euro dance backing track becomes beautiful and moving

yeah, poptimists seemed to catch on to "nu style" in a big way but not "pull it (ill blu mix)", which was...odd

VERY surprised poptimists didn't include "inflation" - you guys seem less enamored of funky than i'd have suspected. i really should resume keeping up w/ poptimists

i like the richgirl track but it has really weak, strangulated vocals -- i'm not a huge fan of that shouty amerie style, i think it's grating & tiring at times

the lead vocals at least -- the harmonizing is fine

Poptimists - to my regret as well as Lex's - didn't catch on much to funky as a scene, even though a bunch of individual tracks broke through.

Nu Style vs Pull It - P'mists is small enough that one member going crazy for something can sway the community and Kat S was going crackers for Nu Style all year.

vv brown for me, hands down. that song is easily one of the best things i heard all year.

VV brown = track of the year for me. Louis La Roche remix makes it even sunnier. Possibly because Amerie was disappointing this year, but I cannot help but think of her as a British Amerie, as neither seem to be able to catch a break. :(

yeah, are you UK? i just assumed. personally i think "russian roulette" is all around wretched -- probably her worst single besides "take a bow" & it's US chart number is pretty deceptive. i just don't get the idea that it's a top flight single of last year

no I'm in US. I'm not a big fan of Russian Roulette. It was fine for a couple of listens, but I've grown tired of it. The pleasure I got from Take A Bow at least lasted a little longer.

seconding jordan's (& everyone's) confusion about "russian roulette"...that song is such a drag. in what world is "cold case love" not the token deep cut from that album, that's the shit

"cold case love" is definitely the only song i've heard from that album that i fuck with, but "russian roulette" was the lead single, not a deep cut, and it got to #2 in the UK for some strange reason, which explains its high poptimists rank. terrible song though.

i was gonna say "well i didn't even know it was a single cuz it FLOPPED" but apparently it got to #9! weird, never heard it, hear "hard" all the time

well like j0rdan said its peak is deceptive and totally iTunes-driven (got to #4 on Hot Digital Songs but only #35 on Hot 100 Airplay). it seems like they didn't plan for it to be huge anyway and it was kinda treated as a statement of intent for Rihanna's "serious album is serious" move anyway, although I personally hate "Hard" more than like anything lately and think it's even worse as a big Rihanna single. don't know why she'd go out of her way to go "anybody can make a hit single, I want to do something different" and then still get songs from Terius, Ne-Yo, Justin, etc.

"battlefield" is my #1 worst song of the year easy, i am completely baffled by the idea that anyone could find anything redeemable there

tbh i think the "get your armor" part is good and delivered really well, but in terms of saving the song it's far too little too late

i wouldn't mind that part except that it feels like someone is striking me repeatedly in the head with a hammer

also re that upthread stuff about the-dream, i could see how people could think that "take u home 2 my mama" is a better song qua song than "fancy" -- i love "fancy" in any context but it's hard to deny that it doesn't derive A TON of its power from the build up of the three songs before it. "take u home 2 my mama" on the other hand is a great club song that is quirky without beating you over the head (organically quirky? idk) with it and it stands alone really on the album to the point where i see how it could be singled out. it's a bit too thin & flimsy sonically for me to really love but i can totally see the rationale

Nah, i regularly listen to "Fancy" outside of the context of the album and it works just as well. Obviously not a single but it's far and away the best track on the album and "Take u home 2 my Mama" is one of the weakest imo.

oh don't get me wrong i love "take u home 2 my mama" - it's terius' country song! - it's just that i've never seen it singled out before the poptimists poll or since - people either go for one of the mid-album suite or one of the singles.

think one reason QH on JH worked so well is because the j-hud original was so restrained - turning her into a towering space battle diva was quite unexpected even though once it had been done, it made total sense. "battlefield" is already huge, and more to the point its hugeness is already why it's annoying.

Battlefield could actually do with being made bigger. It's missing an axe solo or three, maybe a key change.

actually yeah keeping it big might work - what it really needs is some SPACE (as large as QH's "spotlight" is, it has acres of space).
