shystie imo

lot of good stuff here, but was excited to see that

men lie, women lie, hips don't (zvookster), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

tbh this is why ilm/jukebox >>> poptimists

i'll pick the one i'd be most likely to vote for rather than my fav, cuz again i could choose cool album tracks from my favorite albums all day. derulo was on my ballot, so him over "my life would suck without you"

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

medina's "kun for mig" is the track that sticks out for me. I may love Electrik Red a whole lot more than Medina, but rnb was covered decently on the ilx list. "kun for mig" is the kind of one hit wonder created in an alignment of the star where everything fits and a euro dance backing track becomes beautiful and moving

abcfsk, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

i'm voting for "friend lover"

ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

btw how did they end up with a cassie track and not us?

ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

jason derulo

― ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, February 2, 2010 7:54 PM (37 seconds ago)

haha unlike last year she didn't actually have a hit this year

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:56 (fifteen years ago)

Can't decide between Kid Sister, Florence or Gaga. But our poll didn't need a 4th Gaga track, so she's out... and there are other Kid Sister tracks I like more than Right Hand Hi... so, Florence it is.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

in what world did she have a hit last year

xp

ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

"evacuate the dancefloor" is a massive song -- i'm surprised it's so low on their poll

ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

"summer charm" leaked in jan 09 iirc?

the tracks on the poptimists poll that i'd LOVE to have seen place on ilx are richgirl (so close!) and stush (or any other uk funky/dancehall crossover), so either of those.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

the stush track:

A bit of context here (including the ones on both lists)

http://tomewing.tumblr.com/post/367724227/two-polls

I think my highest Popt vote which wasn't also on the ILM poll was Neko Case! But I'll probably pick Nicki Minaj cos I only heard it through the Poptimists poll and I've been listening ever since.

Groke, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

jordan "official girl" actually hit top 40 iirc, i mean at least people besides ilm posters heard it

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

i can't work out how or why "take u home 2 my mama" ended up as the second-placing dream track on poptimists

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

switching to stush, that shystie wasn't even the song i was thinking of

post in haste, repent in leisure

men lie, women lie, hips don't (zvookster), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, poptimists seemed to catch on to "nu style" in a big way but not "pull it (ill blu mix)", which was...odd

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

VERY surprised poptimists didn't include "inflation" - you guys seem less enamored of funky than i'd have suspected. i really should resume keeping up w/ poptimists

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

it's just more niche here

ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

i like the richgirl track but it has really weak, strangulated vocals -- i'm not a huge fan of that shouty amerie style, i think it's grating & tiring at times

ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:10 (fifteen years ago)

the lead vocals at least -- the harmonizing is fine

ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:10 (fifteen years ago)

Poptimists - to my regret as well as Lex's - didn't catch on much to funky as a scene, even though a bunch of individual tracks broke through.

Nu Style vs Pull It - P'mists is small enough that one member going crazy for something can sway the community and Kat S was going crackers for Nu Style all year.

Groke, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:11 (fifteen years ago)

vv brown for me, hands down. that song is easily one of the best things i heard all year.

kaygee, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

Richgirl is the one

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

KIG was the only one I voted for in the ILM poll, so that one.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:22 (fifteen years ago)

bon bon bon bon bon bon bon bon BONKERS!!!!!

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:24 (fifteen years ago)

VV brown = track of the year for me. Louis La Roche remix makes it even sunnier. Possibly because Amerie was disappointing this year, but I cannot help but think of her as a British Amerie, as neither seem to be able to catch a break. :(

danzig, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

i had my own Funky favourites and didn't like most of the ones that made the list either on poptmists or ILM, pretty frustrating altho i didn't really rep for mine on either place

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

"Friend Lover" >>> "He Aint' Wit' Me Now (Tho)" >>> "We Nuh Run" >>> everything else.

Tim F, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:30 (fifteen years ago)

told myself i should really vote for 'i'm on a boat' somewhere, and where better than here tbh.

agree with jordan that the richgirl is somewhat flawed.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:30 (fifteen years ago)

imo the song is unlistenable, it's something that should be catnip for me but it's just mixed so so wrong

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:38 (fifteen years ago)

"friend lover" is the only one of these i actually put on my singles ballot, so that

BONKAS

goldblapp (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

like i suggested a while ago, all the richgirl stuff kinda strikes me as dramatizing rich harrison hunched over the production desk thinking very, very hard about what to do next and maybe hitting himself over the head every so often. until that most recent cut w/gucci mane where he just turned up blind drunk i'm presuming.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

^^What he said.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

i kinda hope rich had a 'cos i can' attitude with it (as terius with 'fancy' if not also other stuff) and that it still hangs together and blows the roof off reflects well on all involved (the girls kill it too imo)

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:56 (fifteen years ago)

"Bonkers" is like "Wearing My Rolex" minus everything good about "Wearing My Rolex".

kind of wish Vistoso Bosses was here.

Is nobody voting for Russian Roulette?

Dan S, Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:08 (fifteen years ago)

idk why people keep bringing that song up

J0rdan S., Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:09 (fifteen years ago)

shit sunk like a stone here

J0rdan S., Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:10 (fifteen years ago)

also, I didn't think Amerie anything would be able to do anything to top 1 Thing, but Why R U comes very close. Shame not to see it on either list

Dan S, Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

Jordan, which track, RR?

Dan S, Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, are you UK? i just assumed. personally i think "russian roulette" is all around wretched -- probably her worst single besides "take a bow" & it's US chart number is pretty deceptive. i just don't get the idea that it's a top flight single of last year

J0rdan S., Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

no I'm in US. I'm not a big fan of Russian Roulette. It was fine for a couple of listens, but I've grown tired of it. The pleasure I got from Take A Bow at least lasted a little longer.

Dan S, Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

I know I'm beating a dead horse but "her titties like woooOOOOO/ her booty like woooooo" >>>>> six minute piano ballads

some dude, Saturday, 6 February 2010 01:41 (fifteen years ago)

^^agree with this completely and I LOVE the six minute piano ballads

maciej recognizing trill, Saturday, 6 February 2010 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

TOUGH CALL imo re ship's binary

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Saturday, 6 February 2010 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

seconding jordan's (& everyone's) confusion about "russian roulette"...that song is such a drag. in what world is "cold case love" not the token deep cut from that album, that's the shit

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Saturday, 6 February 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

"cold case love" is definitely the only song i've heard from that album that i fuck with, but "russian roulette" was the lead single, not a deep cut, and it got to #2 in the UK for some strange reason, which explains its high poptimists rank. terrible song though.

some dude, Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:05 (fifteen years ago)

i was gonna say "well i didn't even know it was a single cuz it FLOPPED" but apparently it got to #9! weird, never heard it, hear "hard" all the time

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:09 (fifteen years ago)

well like j0rdan said its peak is deceptive and totally iTunes-driven (got to #4 on Hot Digital Songs but only #35 on Hot 100 Airplay). it seems like they didn't plan for it to be huge anyway and it was kinda treated as a statement of intent for Rihanna's "serious album is serious" move anyway, although I personally hate "Hard" more than like anything lately and think it's even worse as a big Rihanna single. don't know why she'd go out of her way to go "anybody can make a hit single, I want to do something different" and then still get songs from Terius, Ne-Yo, Justin, etc.

some dude, Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

btw lol @ "Battlefield" in the top 20, if ever there was a canary in the coalmine for popism gone awry

some dude, Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:18 (fifteen years ago)

This is Round Two in another 2009 Pop poll I'm involved in, and is indicative of why I don't "click" with that whole scene (though I like a lot of these tracks):

AGNES Release Me
ALCAZAR Stay The Night
BEYONCE Halo
BEYONCE Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)
CHERYL COLE Fight For This Love
DAVID GUETTA / KELLY ROWLAND When Love Takes Over
FLORENCE + THE MACHINE Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)
FREEMASONS / SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)
GIRLS ALOUD Untouchable
LADY GAGA Bad Romance
LADY GAGA Paparazzi
LADY GAGA Poker Face
LADYHAWKE My Delirium
LA ROUX Bulletproof
ROYKSOPP / ROBYN The Girl And The Robot
SHAKIRA She Wolf
TAYLOR SWIFT You Belong With Me

So terrified of any actual (non-Beyonce) R&B in particular.

Tim F, Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

"battlefield" is my #1 worst song of the year easy, i am completely baffled by the idea that anyone could find anything redeemable there

J0rdan S., Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

tbh i think the "get your armor" part is good and delivered really well, but in terms of saving the song it's far too little too late

some dude, Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:43 (fifteen years ago)

i wouldn't mind that part except that it feels like someone is striking me repeatedly in the head with a hammer

J0rdan S., Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

also re that upthread stuff about the-dream, i could see how people could think that "take u home 2 my mama" is a better song qua song than "fancy" -- i love "fancy" in any context but it's hard to deny that it doesn't derive A TON of its power from the build up of the three songs before it. "take u home 2 my mama" on the other hand is a great club song that is quirky without beating you over the head (organically quirky? idk) with it and it stands alone really on the album to the point where i see how it could be singled out. it's a bit too thin & flimsy sonically for me to really love but i can totally see the rationale

J0rdan S., Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

or two songs before it i guess

J0rdan S., Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

and "her titties like woooOOOOO/ her booty like woooooo" is seminal imo

J0rdan S., Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, i regularly listen to "Fancy" outside of the context of the album and it works just as well. Obviously not a single but it's far and away the best track on the album and "Take u home 2 my Mama" is one of the weakest imo.

Number None, Saturday, 6 February 2010 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Saturday, 6 February 2010 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

oh don't get me wrong i love "take u home 2 my mama" - it's terius' country song! - it's just that i've never seen it singled out before the poptimists poll or since - people either go for one of the mid-album suite or one of the singles.

tim i'd guess your list was some popjustice ish except they're terrified of taylor swift as well. idk if anyone goes to that forum, i really shouldn't but i do it for the same reasons that i read the daily mail website. worst people ever.

"russian roulette" is a great song. "battlefield" is horrible and has had the effect of pretty much turning me off j sparks completely.

ugh @ anyone who thinks latter-day saint etienne is the best that pop music has to offer in 2010 - worse than boosting genuinely awful music imo, you may as well just stick your fingers in your ears and go LA LA LA LA LA every time a new artist hoves into view

ugh @ everything about duckworth lewis whatever, including their placing on any list anywhere

i dont think it's my favorite song on the list, but i voted for it because i'd be most likely to vote for it for a singles poll (in fact it was on my ilm ballot). i probably like "take u home to my mama" or "friend lover" just as much or better, but i didn't consider those. anyway the hook on "whatcha say" is gorgeous imo, it's a great car song

jew bee or nazi bee (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

Is there a ridiculous bombastic Space Battle Homo remix of Battlefield anywhere out there? I'm thinking something on the scale of Quentin Harris remixing Jennifer Hudson and nothing smaller.

think one reason QH on JH worked so well is because the j-hud original was so restrained - turning her into a towering space battle diva was quite unexpected even though once it had been done, it made total sense. "battlefield" is already huge, and more to the point its hugeness is already why it's annoying.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

Battlefield could actually do with being made bigger. It's missing an axe solo or three, maybe a key change.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Sunday, 7 February 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

actually yeah keeping it big might work - what it really needs is some SPACE (as large as QH's "spotlight" is, it has acres of space).
