SUP i live for this
― een, Friday, 5 February 2010 16:34 (fifteen years ago)
I live here and am hoping to get a day off completely to see free stuff with my wife (and have grandma watch the kid).
Did this last year without a badge and got to see the showcase at Ms. Bea's w/ Oh Sees, Real Estate, Kurt Vile, Eat Skull, Fresh & Onlys, Blank Dogs, etc. and then a house party with Oh Sees and Mayyors. Even with those going on, there were still a bunch of other great free options.

Jesus that's a great showcase lineup, how did I miss it?
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 5 February 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)
i know, i'd just found out about it the day prior. i missed a lot of it, but saw quite a bit -- outdoors, loud, and free! this was the full line up (last year):
:: 11:30 - NO AGE:: 11pm - Wavves:: 10:30 - Crystal Stilts:: 10pm - Woods:: 9:30 - Eat Skull:: 9pm - Thee Oh Sees:: 8:30 - Blank Dogs:: 8pm - Psychedelic Horseshit:: 7:30 - caUSE co-MOTION!:: 7pm - Kurt Vile:: 6:30 - Christmas Island:: 6pm - the Fresh & Onlys:: 5:30 - Ganglians:: 5pm - Real Estate:: 4:30 - Los Llamarada:: 4pm - AIDS Wolf:: 3:30 - Fiasco:: 3pm - the Evaporators:: 2:30 - the Mae Shi vs. Crime Novels:: 2pm - Gun Outfit:: 1:30 - Dirty Beauty Shoppe:: 1pm - That Ghost:: 12:30 - Talk Normal:: 12pm - So So Glos
― city worker, Friday, 5 February 2010 18:06 (fifteen years ago)
Mrs. Bea's is always a solid free-of-admission indie fuxxor SXSW venue. my favorites are whatever's going on at Lady Bird Lake (cuz that's just a party) and the rap showcase on Saturday nights at Austin Music Hall (if you can't tell, i have issues with intimacy)
― een, Friday, 5 February 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)
Todd isn't doing miss b's this year. He's putting on a fest in Mexico. Have fun waiting in line for the fader fort, y'all
― to' netta blues (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 5 February 2010 18:56 (fifteen years ago)
why are we waiting in line at the fader fort? there's a zillion other free shows / house parties...
― city worker, Friday, 5 February 2010 19:02 (fifteen years ago)
and then a house party with Oh Sees and Mayyors.

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/artsdesk/music/2010/02/05/festival-watch-does-south-by-southwest-ignore-mexican-american-music/Posted by Mike Kanin on Feb. 5, 2010, at 12:46 pm
SXSW Music 2010: We here at Festival Watch have, from time to time, strapped on the ole press badge in order to piece together a reported effort. We were serving in that capacity this past Thursday when we found ourselves stumbling onto a bit of SXSW-related news.
Each week, the Austin City Council offers its citizens an opportunity to address it on any topic that might be nagging at their conscious. A week ago, Leonard Davila got up to speak about the lack of support for Mexican musicians during SXSW. “The city of Austin is about to extend open arms to the world…it will mean millions of dollars to the local economy where many business and individuals will profit. Some ethnic communities will also be rewarded, and their culture celebrated. But one group in particular will be ignored, that being the Mexican-American community.”
Davila went on to ask his government to support his community by, in the future, reserving a park for SXSW Mexican-American-centric musical events. As is the norm, no one on the dais responded to his request.
Are there any clubs in town not booking SxSW music where Davila could do Mexican shows?

even to people who are going to sxsw, that month-long lead-up where every blog announces another 5 bands is the most grating, dull, useless info overload imaginable

There are apparently already 2,000+ sold, so if you're interested in this I'd buy sooner rather than later.

Hey, a bunch of people I know both made and are in a film debuting at SXSW. It's called "The Corner Parking Lot Movie" and has a bunch of musical folks in it. Should be a good break from bands for anyone so inclined.
Rockers in the movie are: James McNew of Yo La Tengo, members of True Love Always (from Teenbeat Records), Mr. Horribly Charred Infant from The Happy Flowers!!! (aka John Beers), and other less not-very-famous but cool band dudes.
Here is a brief review and here is the movie's website.
Screening times/venues:
SUNDAY, 3/14 - 5pm - Alamo RitzMONDAY 3/15 - 9:30 pm - Alamo Ritz 2THURSDAY 3/19 - 3:15pm - Alamo Ritz 2
A lot of the people involved in this are great friends of mine, so I apologize for all the info, but I am really excited for them. And I think a lot of folks would relate to a lot of the shit in the movie. Jealous of folks going down to be honest.

well ilxor and i live here, pretty sure everybody else is just in town for media/band/etc stuff
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 19 March 2010 13:06 (fifteen years ago)
Nah, I live here too. Just seeing stuff sporadically though; no badge or wristband. Ran into Whiney at the noon (but running late) set by NY girl noise duo Talk Normal on far East 6th St yesterday; turned out the drummer used to take lessons from my Latin percussionist housemate Helen in Philly in the late '90s. Went from there to something called "Lunch With The Germans," where there were German techno DJs and theoretically German food but there were no meat dishes left, only beer and vegetables, so I wound up buying a bratwurst from a stand on the street. Roamed up and down Red River for a couple hours listening to no-name bands (well, one name was Zlam Dunk -- dorkcore from San Marcos). Interviewed Mike Cooley from Drive By Truckers at Stubb's at 4 pm. Went to the Fader Party and drank with Wes Orshoski, who co-direceted the Lemmy movie, and this guy named Klaus from Stuttgart who is Motorhead's biggest fan ever (332 shows I think) and other folks; allegedly some hyped jangle-pop bands were playing in the background, but we did our best to ignore them. Then went to catch Fucked Up back on East 5th; Pink Eyes' belly shaking like a bowl full of jelly was kind of amusing for a couple songs (liked the ones maybe called "Two Cents" and "I Hate Summer" best), but they played six or seven. Then I took a cab home.
If I can motivate myself, I'm thinking of catching This Moment In Black History (3 pm at Plush) and/or Slim Cessna's Auto Club (5 pm and Habana Calle 6 today). Blessure Grave in-store 3pm at End of An Ear probably too much of a trek. Or might catch part of the Girls Rock Camp showcase w/ Exene Cervanka and Girl In Coma at Cafe Mundi. Or maybe I won't.

School of Seven Bells show a couple hours ago was holyshitamazing. I've caught their show 2 or 3 times before and it was great, yes, but went into tonight's thing expecting more of the same. So they were 30 min late to the stage... "My Cabal" came and went as song #1, it was enjoyable and sounded great (glad that long soundcheck was put to good use). So that was that; I was expecting them to breeze through "Fast Asleep," "Disguise," "Connjur" and the rest on autopilot, pretty but predictable.
Nope. Song 2 was brand new, same with 3, 4, 5... All a BIG progression from Alpinisms, waaaayyy wayy better (and I say this with Alpinisms being one of my most played, and favorite, albums of the past few years).
The new songs are more confident, less fleeting and the vocal interplay has been really pushed forward. They still do the dual vocals thing but I dare say it's improved, been spotlighted at the front of each song, more complex harmonies, just absolutely gorgeous. Meanwhile Ben Curtis has gone more in a Kevin Shields direction, guitar parts less Cocteau ambient-wash, more muscular, straight out of Medicine's "5ive" or "Aruca" era stuff, blasts of feedback stabbing between Spector-y vocal harmonies. Song tempos are all faster, easier to dance to; they've kept the drum machine but added a live fourth member who compliments it well. First new song had me floored, almost at tears, just incredibly beautiful and absolutely the right direction for their sound to go next.
Watch out... This new album is really gonna be something to fuck with.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 20 March 2010 04:54 (fifteen years ago)
An easy comparison for the new songs would be MBV "Soon"... But that might not be a high enough compliment. Yes, really.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 20 March 2010 04:57 (fifteen years ago)
NICE. I'm quite jealous. Now about this "Soon" not being a high enough compliment...
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 March 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)
See, the thing Kevin Shields still has on Ben Curtis is that Shields, like our dear Mr. Raggett, does not give a damn about his hair. During those gorgeous breaks in his guitar parts where the vocals take center stage, Curtis is constantly tempted to keep slicking back his pretty-boy, keenly kept hair. He must've done it 50 times throughout the 30 minute set...
"Soon" is of course untouchable, but these new songs (esp. the first) really did bowl me over in the same way. Maybe not quite to the level of Ned + MBV insta-rapture, but not many things come close.

Way worth coming to see the xx for the second night in a row just to see them play to a reverent, hushed, dimly lit Presbyterian church full of natural reverb and stunning acoustics (pretty much the #1 perfect setting for their music), and to have a chance to play long enough to work "Fantasy" into the setlist.
So far:
"Intro""Crystalized""Heart Skipped a Beat""Fantasy""Shelter""VCR""Basic Space"
And still going...

Was anyone at the Hole show last night? Not a fan myself, and obviously Courtney Love is a fucking prima donna of the highest order, but this report from RollingStone.com makes it sound like absolute torture:
Hole Cover the Rolling Stones, And Courtney Love Isn’t Satisfied at SXSW“Make a hole!” yelled one of the bouncers at Dirty Dog, where Courtney Love was about to continue her return to music with a reconstituted version of her band Hole on the third night of the SXSW Music Festival. It was creeping up on 1:15 am. The crowd was packed so tightly together stage left of the dive bar that an emergency situation seemed imminent. Just then the bouncer bulldozered an opening through a space out of thin air to accommodate Woody Harrelson, dressed in a light tan suit and matching Kangol cabbie hat, and his entourage of almost 10 deep. John Doe, frontman for the punk band X, was nearby in the crowd and grew absolutely irate. He pointed at a passing Harrelson and barked, “You fucking celebrities.”Harrelson and crew, en route to Love’s dressing room, did an about-face minutes later, as Love had just taken to the stage. She was dressed like a wood nymph in pink, with a halo atop her long blond locks. She was telling the audience that she wasn’t doing this for them, but for herself. Then she flipped everyone the bird and said, “Suck it.”A sludgy, bluesy opening number led to a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil,” followed by a take on the new Hole song “Skinny Little Bitch,” from the forthcoming album Nobody’s Daughter, out April 27th. It sounded much better live, with Love’s raspy growl coated by new guitarist Micko Larkin’s swirls of fuzz.Love continued with “Doll Parts,” an older song that was supposedly written in response to her first encounter with Kurt Cobain. After that, she started complaining that her voice was shot and that if she kept playing loud songs she wouldn’t be able to play Perez Hilton’s party the following night. “It’s 1:00-fucking-am and I’m an old person,” she said. “It’s time for me to get my blowjob on.”But she broke out a few more covers, including a full-on band version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman” and an acoustic duet version of “Bette Davis Eyes” with Larkin. Elsewhere in the crowd, Matthew McConaughey, wearing a Kangol to match Harrelson’s, looked on approvingly. But Love, who wouldn’t let up about her voice, wasn’t pleased. “Worst show of my life,” she told the crowd, in parting. “I’m so glad you were here to witness it.”

I caught Bear In Heaven yesterday at Red House. I'd never heard of them, but was surprised, they weren't bad. Ended up at Hole In The Wall, and too many pints.

Really can't decide if attending (or even trying to get into) the Big Star tribute tonight at Antone's is a really good or a really really bad idea. Members of Big Star, Cheap Trick, the dB's, Mike Mills of R.E.M., rampant rumors of Paul Westerberg... would it be an enjoyable, fitting tribute with great music? or a shitstorm of poorly rehearsed covers, rubbing in Chilton's death when instead I could go see Death play down the street? To go or not to go? Hmmmmm...

Either you're legit or we are taking the same drugs. I saw Bill Murray at the xx/GZA/Holy Fuck/jj show the other night at the Mohawk.

HOOS, since you asked the other night, I must inform you... GZA was awful. Came 40 min late to stage, played for no more than 15, had his associates do more of the rapping than he did (and they were better, too). He kept leaning over the front row, flirting with various ladies, asking to see tits, and then checked his BlackBerry on stage a few times. One of his associates kept holding him up by the back of his coat, to keep him from falling over; dude was fucking WASTED.

Walked by the Perez Hilton joint maybe 30 min ago. Shit was packed to the streets, maybe 300-400 extra waiting outside, and about two dozen cops -- overheard it was possibly being shut down.
Headliners, for those wondering; Hole, Estelle, Snoop, Macy Gray.

Marina and the Diamonds. (Don't know if she's considered a headliner, but she's certainly being mentioned as a highlight in online discussion of his party.)

That sounds like a hell of a Chinese crunch salad. Kurupt is all but finished, no sign of Quik or anything from the recent album, and I am going to head next door and see how the Dam-Funk line is progressing in the wake of Surfer Blood...
