Inspired by listening to 'Funnel of Love' by Wanda Jackson:

http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2009/04/funnel-of-love-mp3s.html

Thanks to 'international slackness (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ)' for the heads up.

Moka, Friday, 5 February 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

By the way, if you dont have a turntable or a vinyl collection Audacity can emulate this slow down with any mp3 you throw at it.

Moka, Friday, 5 February 2010 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

Only song I tried so far is 'The Rip' by Portishead. Beth Gibbons sounds amazing as a man and the synth arrangement at the end of the song sounds gorgeous. Will try to upload to youtube.

Moka, Friday, 5 February 2010 23:27 (fifteen years ago)

i remember doing this with the 45 of "friends" by jody watley when i was a kid

XX Decontrol (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 5 February 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

there's a whole genre of music started because of this (well 2 actually). cosmic disco from italy in the mid 80s and screwed and chopped southern hip hop.

jaxon, Friday, 5 February 2010 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

The Fields of the Nephilim, "Sumerland" -- at 45 rpm their usual glowering goth brilliant nonsense. At 33 rpm, the actual march of goddamn doom, especially when the drums fully kick in and lay waste to everything around.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 February 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

Coil's instrumental version of "Windowpane" sounds fantastic on 33, heads up stirmonster.

sleeve, Friday, 5 February 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

Rush O))) - "Working Man" screwed down to doom/sludge/stoner speed!

tylerw, Friday, 5 February 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

itunes should totally do this out of the box, that it doesn't is further proof that comptuers are shit, qed case closed.

take me to your lemur (ledge), Friday, 5 February 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

i think in quicktime, there's an option to muck with speed/pitch

Philip Nunez, Friday, 5 February 2010 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

many years ago in true peel style by accident i put on walking with mr wheeze, the instrumental b-side on the 7" our house by madness on at 33rpm.
never been able to listen to it at the normal speed since such was the improvement.

two of my favorite kinds of club music!

i found a copy of jermaine jackson's BASS ODYSSEY this morning inside a rick james LP i bought, and it sounds fucking awesome on 33. just like cosmic boogie, like jaxon says. slow dance music is like the biggest duh slam dunk obv for blaz0rs.

69, Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

my girlfriend used to play "African Rhythms" by Mi Ami (ex-members of Black Eyes) at 33 on her radio showz; sounded pretty great, from my (admittedly biased) perspective

LRN, which helps companies build ethical cultures (bernard snowy), Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

Once spent ages playing Fiddy's "Candy Shop" slower and slower in a loop, works a treat.

aphex twin - druqks

"I Feel Love" is like the poster child for this...

dlp9001, Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

conversely... I once started "Giant Steps" without realizing I had left the turntable at 45. but it sounds fine that way, except that it makes Trane sound like the greatest soprano sax player to ever live.

LRN, which helps companies build ethical cultures (bernard snowy), Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

thread has inspired me to pack another bowl, good work everyone

Hope Sandoval - Suzanne slowed down from 45 rpm to 33 1/3. Really like how the vibraphone and the harmonica sounds on this one.

OMG 'The Rip' sounds like a real Scott Walker song.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

I do this (as well as 33 to 45) all the time, it's like my first instinct when listening to a bad instrumental record.

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 6 February 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

wow the rip is great

XX Decontrol (M@tt He1ges0n), Saturday, 6 February 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

all of metal box slowed down would probably be pretty cool

guammls (QE II), Saturday, 6 February 2010 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

OH. MY. GOD. Someone posted Madonna's "Justify My Love" at 33 on the gay thread over the summer and it was WHAAAT THE FUCK good. It sounds so sultry and somehow even more dimly-lit/smoky than the original.

Did this with the entirety of the Jah Division 12-inch. It went from good to completely awesome.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 6 February 2010 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

From the Rush O))) thread (and still the answer):

I played the Butthole Surfers PCPPEP at 33 for a good long while before I realized it was supposed to be on 45. Hadn't heard anything else by them at that point so had no idea it was wrong. It sounds heavy and evil as fuck.

Still do it every once in a while just for the memories.

Joint Custody (ian), Saturday, 6 February 2010 04:26 (fifteen years ago)

I did this to Sisters Of Mercy's Afterhours and Joy Division's Atmosphere and then played Ramones' It's Alive album at 45.

StanM, Saturday, 6 February 2010 04:57 (fifteen years ago)

The Rip sounds like a Knife or Fever Ray thing, but with a consistent vocal pitch.

Evan, Saturday, 6 February 2010 05:22 (fifteen years ago)

sometimes i like to play girl group 45s at 33.

Joint Custody (ian), Saturday, 6 February 2010 05:47 (fifteen years ago)

basically any instrumental is gonna sound better imo.

There's a composer who djs as Ratface Dreamangel who does this live - with beatmatching - with early 90s dance music ie "Don't Stop" "Addicted To Bass" "Heaven" - every one of those 8ths! 16ths! 32nds! 64ths! 128ths! snare swells sounds like the collapse of a civilization

Megadeth Panel (Ówen P.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

TAINTED DUB

international slackness (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

Not a fan of this, don't care for slowing things down. (Which means I never took advantage of my parents' ancient 4-speed stereo which included that weird "16" speed.) Used to play LPs at 45 a lot though, especially "Sister Ray" and Fleetwood Mac's "Never Going Back Again".

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 07:02 (fifteen years ago)

If you have Winamp then you can go to the Preferences screen (e.g. by pressing ctrl-P), Plug-ins -> DSP/Effect, pick "Nullsoft Signal Processing Studio DSP" from the list, Configure, load the preset "justin - simple pitch and tempo (half-2x) control", tick the checkbox to enable processing, and mess about with the speed.

(Not as complicated as it sounds once you get used to it. You might need to have downloaded the full free version and not the Lite version. Doesn't work on Winamps before version 5, if anyone is still clinging to version 2. Hell, is anyone else still even using Winamp? I mostly am, but I'm a luddite.)

33 is about 74% of 45, so if you aim for halfway between the default and the bottom of the slider, you're roughly there. The other direction is about a third of the way between the centre point and the top of the slider.

canna kirk (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 10:04 (fifteen years ago)

I was at a club when they played the Charlatans' "The Only One I Know" at 33, and it sounded wow!

Next time at the same place, they did the same thing, but realised their 'mistake' and returned the speed to 45.

If I hadn't been there that time, I'd have thought they had done it on purpose.

Mark G, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 10:17 (fifteen years ago)

there's a whole genre of music started because of this (well 2 actually). cosmic disco from italy in the mid 80s and screwed and chopped southern hip hop.

And also Belgian New Beat, as I recall.

The original Pure Trance non-vocal mix of the KLF's "What Time Is Love" sounded good at 33. Oh, and there was a Vicious Pink B-side, "8:15 To Nowhere".

As a nipper, I discovered that my Pinky & Perky singles played at 33 converted to normal female voices. Also, if you play the sped-up vocals towards the end of The Goons "Ying Tong Song" at 16rpm, they convert back to normal.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 10:33 (fifteen years ago)

If you have Winamp then you can go to the Preferences screen (e.g. by pressing ctrl-P), (...)

wow, thanks for this. i had no idea this was available in winamp.

the dub version of "let the music play" sounds good at 33.

Slade Venom Secret Police (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 4 February 2011 02:50 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

I just condensed the first side of Disintegration into 8:23 w/o pitch-shifting. Some of the vocals are completely indecipherable, but the drums and guitar come off really cool in some places.
