beyonce - b'day poll

i dunno if this is gonna erase the need for a general beyonce singles poll, but i think there's a bunch of different kinds of fans of different songs on this album, so this could be cool. plus this is a classic and almost every song here just bangs.

Tim F, Monday, 8 February 2010 08:22 (fifteen years ago)

i like "suga mama" and "green light" a lot more than everyone else apparently, maybe i should stop talking about beyonce

"ring the alarm" is one of my least favorite songs, i only liked it in the context of that awesome vmas performance from a few years back

(i think that was also the vmas that had t.i doing "what you know" but he brought out dro to do a half a verse of "shoulder lean" first)

vincent gallogina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 08:42 (fifteen years ago)

oh, I like every song on the album, those two just aren't as good as some of the others. "Ring the Alarm" I hated for a while but grew to like

jesus is radric (The Reverend), Monday, 8 February 2010 08:57 (fifteen years ago)

ah i'd forgotten that great "ring the alarm" vmas performance!! so good. great video too.

great album to poll anyway - the whole thing is like beyoncé going, so what if i was ACTUALLY CRAZY like MENTALLY DERANGED in love?? - "check on it" is on my copy though and i'd have included the tracks that came with the reissue and the sundry bonus cuts, cuz there's gold in there. i basically love all of it, except maybe "green light".

1. suga mama (beyoncé has never hollered so well - SIT ON MAMA LAP, YEAH!)
2. ring the alarm
3. irreplaceable
4. get me bodied (extended version) (do the naomi campbell walk! the naomi campbell walk! *throws diamond-encrusted mobile phone at maid's head*)
5. upgrade u
6. freakum dress (the gravitational pull on the chorus is immense)

Tim's ranking looks about right, but I gave "Upgrade U" the edge and my vote (just barely).

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 8 February 2010 14:40 (fifteen years ago)

"Suga Mama" is the shit.

i could say Badu but i know that's not what you're asking

or e-red

J0rdan S., Thursday, 11 February 2010 05:51 (fifteen years ago)

oh duh badu - e red is close imo

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 05:55 (fifteen years ago)

i thought that too but i thought 'female solo artist' was implied

some dude, Thursday, 11 February 2010 05:57 (fifteen years ago)

Because I Love It *ducks*

Back to Black, too, but that's not what you're asking either

I think I could take those 5 as the 5 best female r&b albums of the latter half of the decade pretty easy, unless I'm forgetting something fairly obvious

GRIZZLY! GRRR! GRRR! So Indie Entertaaaaiiiinmeeent! (The Reverend), Thursday, 11 February 2010 05:59 (fifteen years ago)

i should've voted "freakum dress"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 11 February 2010 06:46 (fifteen years ago)

Something prevents me from totally loving this album, even though on a track by track basis I think it's pretty great. I have a much stronger emotional connection to many objectively weaker female R&B albums.

Tim F, Thursday, 11 February 2010 06:48 (fifteen years ago)

well, it is a pretty one note album imo -- the one note that it does strike (beyonce as super feminist party banshee) is pretty great, but it's more nakedly emotional tracks ("irreplaceable" aside but as great as it is it feels kind of canned in the context of the album) are kind of shit

J0rdan S., Thursday, 11 February 2010 06:52 (fifteen years ago)

hey "Resentment" is pretty good. it's stuff from the deluxe edition like "Flaws And All" that's terrible.

some dude, Thursday, 11 February 2010 06:54 (fifteen years ago)

i ended up copping this album after it'd been out a long time and thinking hey, now i can get that deluxe edition used, but then i realized other than "Check On It" i hate pretty much every song they added.

some dude, Thursday, 11 February 2010 06:55 (fifteen years ago)

ha, you know, i was pretty much specifically referring to "flaws and all" &" welcome to hollywood" which i had jammed in the middle of my tracklisting, i guess i forgot to delete them when i trimmed my deluxe download into the standard edition

"flaws & all" was giving me horrible disc 1 of 'sasha fierce' acid reflux

J0rdan S., Thursday, 11 February 2010 06:57 (fifteen years ago)

i think even more highly of this album now that i don't feel like i was cheating when i skipped those songs

J0rdan S., Thursday, 11 February 2010 06:58 (fifteen years ago)

"Hollywood" is so terrible -- the drivetime DJ on the rap station here would throw that song into mixes like at least a couple times a week for 3 years, until I called him out in print for it, don't know if he actually stopped after that but I would like to think so

some dude, Thursday, 11 February 2010 07:00 (fifteen years ago)

"horrible songs that otherwise good drivetime DJs insist on routinely playing during mixes" would be a funny thread -- this great dj down in miami always play this "supaman high" freestyle by some fake nicki minaj chick that had to have been his sister/girlfriend etc -- so infuriating

J0rdan S., Thursday, 11 February 2010 07:02 (fifteen years ago)

Tim is otm about the gravy aspect of those songs. Like, there's no good reason why "Ring the Alarm" and "Resentment" should sit well on the same album, but those tracks provide a solid middle ground so the extremes don't feel too jarring.

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 22:49 (fifteen years ago)

i've only heard the singles from this, but the thread is making me feel i should have it plus the prime cuts from the extended. the singles are fantastic, but i'm a little worried it's a little relentless and one-note-y all together, with all those hooks piled on top of hooks? am i crazy?

No this is how I found it at the time - I'd start to switch off mentally (and then frequently in fact) for the stretch between "Ring The Alarm" and "Irreplaceable" even though there's not really any significant drop in quality.

i'm pretty excited about the prospect of dream & tricky doing the whole ciara album -- i think it could be much closer to the e-red album than mariah's was and their songs on 'fantasy ride' are pretty great

otoh idk why any label would allow that to happen considering how much e-red & mariah's albums tanked

― birdman mumia (J0rdan S.), Thursday, February 11, 2010 5:12 PM (1 week ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Ciara's last album performed much further below expectations than either of those albums, and producers like Dream/Tricky are only judged by labels on the basis of their latest hits (which are many and recent), not the albums they helm -- you think anyone ever went "gee, we could get Timbaland for this project but that Ms. Jade album really didn't do well"?

OMG Thanx Jeezy (some dude), Sunday, 21 February 2010 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

well i think it's one thing to get dream & trick in the studio with her, but doing the WHOLE album is a whole different thing. at least with mariah they had already done "touch my body" together, but what is laface like "gotta get ciara locked down with terius & tricky CUZ WE NEED ANOTHER 'HIGH PRICE' STAT"

i think it's great for the listener mind you, just from a business standpoint it doesn't seem to make a whole bunch of sense. who knows if it's even true or not.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 February 2010 02:17 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno -- again, i doubt things like chemistry or past hits by the same artist/producer combination even come into consideration. in these desperate times all known quantities are looked as interchangeable, the words "a Lil Wayne collaboration might not be the right look for this particular project" are never uttered, shit's just getting thrown at the wall as far as i can tell. plus, having one A-list production team do a whole album as a package deal is probably cheaper than getting 10 different ones to do a track or two at their usual rate.

OMG Thanx Jeezy (some dude), Sunday, 21 February 2010 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

Deja Vu isn't HORRIBLE but you can't dance to it, whereas a dj should read my mind and put Suga Mama on so all us drunk girls could get our twerk on. btw it was Havana in Cap Hill, maybe you've been. There should be some artist-song association index for choosing clubs, when I say "Beyonce" does the dj think "Ring the Alarm (Freemasons Mix)", "Creole," "Get on the Bus (Timbaland Hip-hop Rework)," "Crazy in Love (Radio Edit)" or what?
