love story now and forever

christ this is impossible

strongohulkingtonsghost, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:29 (fifteen years ago)

i mean not a single one of what would be my own top ten appears, i think, but there's a lot of good shit here

strongohulkingtonsghost, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:30 (fifteen years ago)

seems stupid to put Witness in as the only hip-hop, but it might actually be my favourite anyway

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:33 (fifteen years ago)

i think "i feel space," oddly enough

strongohulkingtonsghost, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

many great tracks here. for me, it's archangel v. blind v. silent shout v. i feel space v. one more time.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

As far as my own dancefloor experiences go I'm having trouble thinking beyond 'Body Language' and 'Rej'. The former really felt like the pivot on which everything turned for me - that gateway drug from electrohouse to minimal. Rej wasn't massively different in terms of the tricks it used but it just seemed to work in so many contexts.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:38 (fifteen years ago)

"La La Land" is the one I've gone crazy to on the dancefloor most often.

Tim F, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:40 (fifteen years ago)

more i look at this the more i wonder if my own list of fave is weirdly idiosyncratic or ra is nuts

strongohulkingtonsghost, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:41 (fifteen years ago)

the former, probably

strongohulkingtonsghost, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:41 (fifteen years ago)

what is yr own list strongo.

(both, probably)

Tim F, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:43 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely the wrong Superpitcher track in there and their number one choice is utterly baffling.

Still, incredible dancefloor memories of all of these:

Laurent Garnier - Man With The Red Face
Âme - Rej
Burial - Archangel
Nathan Fake - Sky Is Pink (James Holden Remix)
Theo Parrish - Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix)
Omar-S - Psychotic Photosynthesis
Daft Punk - One More Time
Mathew Jonson - Marionette
Audion - Mouth to Mouth
Lindstrøm - I Feel Space
Funk D'Void - Diabla
Fischerspooner - Emerge
M.A.N.D.Y. vs Booka Shade - Body Language
Shackleton - Blood On My Hands (Ricardo Villalobos Apocalypso Now Mix)
Claude VonStroke - Who's Afraid of Detroit?
The Knife - Silent Shout
Carl Craig - Sandstorms
The Rapture - House Of Jealous Lovers
Kerri Chandler - Bar a Thym
Layo & Bushwacka! - Love Story
Mylo - Drop the Pressure
Green Velvet - La La Land
Tony Lionni - Found a Place
Vitalic - Poney Part 1

It saddens me profoundly that I'll almost certainly not look back on the equivalent list in ten year's time with the same breadth of awesome experiences associated with it.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

well i haven't put together anything formal but for instance i do remember ukg existing before dubstep which i realize is not really resident advisor's remit but is a pretty big blind spot from my perspective

strongohulkingtonsghost, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

One More Time or (This Is)... for me.

Dwight Yorke, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:47 (fifteen years ago)

That blind spot has always baffled me with RA - they've almost completely ignored funky as well as far as I can see.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:47 (fifteen years ago)

Also Gabriel Ananda's 'Ihre Personlische Glucksmelodie', which is pretty much my favourite single by anyone in the 00s, isn't there :(

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:51 (fifteen years ago)

Resident Advisor's history of 00s dance is basically prog-house --> James Holden --> minimal --> hey let's go back and check out microhouse/electro-house/metro area --> late 00s deep-minimal --> oh hey let's get all precious about house and techno --> post-dubstep.

Tim F, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

Also Gabriel Ananda's 'Ihre Personlische Glucksmelodie', which is pretty much my favourite single by anyone in the 00s, isn't there :(

good tune. Was 'Doppelwhipper' as omnipresent in clubs as the dance press have led me to believe? I was 15/16 at the time and living in rural Norfolk, so y'know I didn't even know what a club was.

So breathtakingly stunning.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

Also, not the Kerri Chandler track I'd pick, but I understand it was his massive crossover hit, et al. Still, "In the Morning" 4eva!

queen frostine (Eric H.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

Laurent Garnier - Man With The Red Face
Ricardo Villalobos - Easy Lee
Nathan Fake - Sky Is Pink (James Holden Remix)
M.A.N.D.Y. vs Booka Shade - Body Language
Vitalic - Poney Part 1

one of these. man with the red face is prob the one i'd enjoy hearing most on a night out these days.

jabba hands, Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:41 (fifteen years ago)

this is more or less impossible. i'm glad that i've heard pretty much all these tracks too. i plumped on Losing My Edge, just cos I remember it blowing me away when "I was there"..

dog latin, Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

not heard at least a dozen of these

of the others 'He Not In' was the one I was most 'wtf do people love about this so much?' just never saw the fuss

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:50 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, never really got the appeal, until putting "Been A Long Time" over the top improved it 1000%.

Tim F, Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

He Not In is probably the worst thing here.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
Audion - Mouth to Mouth
Vitalic - Poney Part 1

wtf am i going to do

also, my friends have mostly crap taste in music, so i've heard maybe 2 or 3 of these out, the rest in my headphones :/ my imaginary dancefloors are great though. BUT YES i'll be in berlin for a week in march and will make up for as much lost time as i can.

scratch paper (lukas), Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

There is some amazing stuff here (Rej! Falling Up remix! I Feel Space!) but Sky Was Pink is all-decade top three for me, just the most incredible, logical, exhilarating thing.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

don't suppose anyone has a Spotify playlist for these?

I am using your worlds, Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

"It saddens me profoundly that I'll almost certainly not look back on the equivalent list in ten year's time with the same breadth of awesome experiences associated with it."

That's exactly how I feel comparing this list to a 90s one. I love a lot of the tunes here but after 2004 I don't associate them with anything more than sitting at home. :(

Bring back the Hitman & Her.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Thursday, 11 February 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

don't suppose anyone has a Spotify playlist for these?

Grooveshark list of most of the top 35 a guy on another forum put together (with a few errors and omissions):

http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/playlist/Dance+Tracks/24591945

I did a list of most of the rest - I'll see if I can dig it up. For me, the top five were like "yeah!" and then much of the rest of the top 50 was pretty wtf. Still, I think "Who's Afraid Of Detroit" stands out as the most innovative and compelling of the lot. Sorry if I peed on your poll.

viborg, Thursday, 11 February 2010 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

And apparently to RA, ambient doesn't exist, and drum and bass was barely a blip on the radar for the past decade (not that the years 2003-2008 really offered up much). And as far as James Murphy et al are concerned, after hearing the excellent spate of DFA remixes that were coming out for a while there most of the LCD Soundsystem material was pretty disappointing to my ears.

viborg, Thursday, 11 February 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

And apparently to RA, ambient doesn't exist, and drum and bass was barely a blip on the radar for the past decade (not that the years 2003-2008 really offered up much).

If you want that kind of coverage, why are you looking to RA for it?

I am not saying that to be a smart ass, but they are a single site on the web. It isn't like there is a shortage of coverage on specialist scenes if you are willing to look for it.

the muddy waters of donk (Display Name), Thursday, 11 February 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

Don't want to speak for Todd here, but I'd have to speculate that the embrace of everything post-"minimal" on Tim's timeline probably has something to do with TB taking over editorial. The slow inclusion of most other genres probably has something to do with TB slowly bringing in more writers with different areas of expertise.

x-post

Went with "Blind."

talrose, Thursday, 11 February 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

Tim F's summary of Ra's flight through the 00's is spot on

im gonna have to go with one more time - it totally encapsulates a period in my life when i was completely in love with house music and going out and i have a very very specific fond memory of junior sanchez looping it and filtering it and teasing it out at 3am for a very very drunken (and quite sweaty) shindig crowd in 2000 - it might not be the best piece of music there, it might not be the best track either ... but its the best song

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Friday, 12 February 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

Prob gonna go with Miura, but any of these really for me:

Metro Arena - Miura
Âme - Rej
Theo Parrish - Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix)
Omar-S - Psychotic Photosynthesis
Hercules & Love Affair - Blind
Audion - Mouth to Mouth
Lindstrøm - I Feel Space
Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo
M.A.N.D.Y. vs Booka Shade - Body Language

FUCK! I SHOULD'VE PICKED BLACKWATER.

anyway, there are so many missing here that a list of such seems almost superfluous. some great UR tracks have come about in that time (though 'Jaguar' JUST misses the cut), for example, along with SOOO many others.

that said, lex, your list above (plus some others) would be my list, too.

the muddy waters of donk (Display Name), Friday, 12 February 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

that's a strange radioslave pick. i would've thought "tantakatan" or "bell clap dance" or even "my bleep" or his remix of "deer in the headlights" were bigger tunes than "grindhouse tool" somehow (my personal pick is no sleep pt. 3!)

i'm tempted to vote "losing my edge". i listened to it loud recently for the first time in ages, it still sounds amazing

well it was indie-crossover - lots of HUGE tracks are, and electroclash as a scene was pretty indie-crossover - but yeah it was a pretty straight-up club track which didn't need any indie context to work, really

heh i am going to an electroclash reminiscence night next month

I'm miffed that Luomo didn't make the top 50, and that Synkro didn't make the list. If I had to pick my favorite dance track from the last decade, that'd be it.

― babylon sister (Siah Alan)

^^^ Definitely one of my all-time favorites as well. I turn into a puddle of goo when the coily synth textures weave in at about 5:20. Makes me wish it'd somehow come out in the mid 90s, when I was raving all the time.

Maybe the fact that Vocalcity placed at 13 on the albums list took away from individual tracks. I dunno. Also Movements (weirdly) was in the top ten so that might explain the absence of Mandarine Girl.

Hypn0tic Br3ak$ uploaded the entire RA Top 100, which I managed to d/l before all the Blogger mp3 blogs were shut down. It's pretty much all I've been listening to for the past two weeks.

My favourite from the top 100 is prob "So Weit Wie Noch Nie", but that didn't make the top 50, so it's between

Laurent Garnier - Man With The Red Face
Shackleton - Blood On My Hands (Ricardo Villalobos Apocalypso Now Mix)
Radio Slave - Grindhouse Tool

and right now I'm leaning toward Radio Slave (which I had never heard before last week).

Probably the most glaring error, especially since RA and that crowd went nuts for that song for a period of at least a few months.

Well, I voted for the Knife but it was a toss-up between that and I Feel Space so you can just go and give the prize to Lindstrom in the morning, Lindstrom in the evening, Lindstrom at supper time...

Damn that poll for getting that stuck in my head now.

eight years pass...

Feel unmoored now that they don't do year-end polls anymore.

They've done several best of the year Spotify playlists if that helps?

The list-plus-blurbs isn't numbered, but it's under the Spotify embed on this page: https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/3357

i’m with saer on this, lists and calendars are antithetical to vibes

the late great, Friday, 28 December 2018 22:19 (six years ago)

I only have time to tap into vibes once a year at my age.
