WHORE - Various Artists Play Wire

Tough one. Band Of Susans' version of "Ahead" always seems to make it onto almost every mix I do.

I'm not even sure which one I'm voting for! I predict MBV will win but this is ILM, you never know. There's a few pseudonyms on this list, if anyone wants to point them out. I play this somewhat regularly, which speaks to the artists here but more so to the music that Wire created, that it can bend and twist into all these different forms.

Yeah, choosing = kinda impossible. But I always liked how Mike Watt's cut ended it on a good note, a very warm and loose feeling. It felt like not only a tribute to Wire but to D. Boon, somehow.

I mean, it's like Wire wrote that song so Band of Susans could simultaneously perfect their sound *and* do the best Wire cover in the history of the universe.

I've always considered compiling a companion volume to WHORE made up of the best of the existing Wire covers (as listed in another thread).

Yeah, that MBV track is probably my fav cover ever that wasn't done by Nina Simone.

There was a follow-up of sorts, where various bands/artists covered "Drill" by Wire. It was called "Dugga Dugga Dugga"...

Plus an album consisting entirely of covers of "Outdoor Miner" called "A Houseguests Wish". I listened to it once - way too much for me!

A Houseguests Wish would have done a bit better to pull more of the preexisting covers around -- they included the Lush and Flying Saucer Attack ones but the Antenna and Luna ones would have been nice to see.

I would very much like an ILX Wire covers project.

(Once I spent a two-hour bus journey listening to the first 3 albums and imagining the chiptune Wire tribute I was going to make when I got home, but then I got home and remembered I have no musical ability)

I shouldn't say this with Ned around, but that MBV cover is the only MBV that I've felt the urge to listen to in several years - for me it captures both what MBV were best at and what Wire were best at (or one of the directions of Wire, anyway) better than either their main output or the original track. Really transcendent. Would like to jog my memory on a few of the others before voting, but can't really see voting for anything else.

You should be involved with "Ambitious" Ned! Lots of good spoken word opportunity at the end there.

Not really fair with MBV on the list, but my second favorite is definitely the Bark Psychosis track (which is also my second favorite thing they've done after the initial 12").
