Tough one. Band Of Susans' version of "Ahead" always seems to make it onto almost every mix I do.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 12 February 2010 01:54 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not even sure which one I'm voting for! I predict MBV will win but this is ILM, you never know. There's a few pseudonyms on this list, if anyone wants to point them out. I play this somewhat regularly, which speaks to the artists here but more so to the music that Wire created, that it can bend and twist into all these different forms.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 12 February 2010 01:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, choosing = kinda impossible. But I always liked how Mike Watt's cut ended it on a good note, a very warm and loose feeling. It felt like not only a tribute to Wire but to D. Boon, somehow.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 February 2010 01:56 (fifteen years ago)

I predict MBV will win but this is ILM, you never know because this is ILM.

∫ (Curt1s Stephens), Friday, 12 February 2010 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

Band of Susans, without a moment's hesitation.

dlp9001, Friday, 12 February 2010 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, it's like Wire wrote that song so Band of Susans could simultaneously perfect their sound *and* do the best Wire cover in the history of the universe.

dlp9001, Friday, 12 February 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

I predict MBV will win, but this is ILM, you never know.

.. was what I ws going to say...

Mark G, Friday, 12 February 2010 08:09 (fifteen years ago)

Band Of Susans for me.

ILX should do a Wire covers project.

Joe Pass Filter (MaresNest), Friday, 12 February 2010 12:46 (fifteen years ago)

Do you mean ILX members covering Wire?

I've always considered compiling a companion volume to WHORE made up of the best of the existing Wire covers (as listed in another thread).

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 12 February 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yep yep!

I would also like to hear a companion to Whore.

Joe Pass Filter (MaresNest), Friday, 12 February 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that MBV track is probably my fav cover ever that wasn't done by Nina Simone.

Fetchboy, Friday, 12 February 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

There was a follow-up of sorts, where various bands/artists covered "Drill" by Wire. It was called "Dugga Dugga Dugga"...

Mark G, Friday, 12 February 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

Plus an album consisting entirely of covers of "Outdoor Miner" called "A Houseguests Wish". I listened to it once - way too much for me!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

A Houseguests Wish would have done a bit better to pull more of the preexisting covers around -- they included the Lush and Flying Saucer Attack ones but the Antenna and Luna ones would have been nice to see.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

I would very much like an ILX Wire covers project.

(Once I spent a two-hour bus journey listening to the first 3 albums and imagining the chiptune Wire tribute I was going to make when I got home, but then I got home and remembered I have no musical ability)

I shouldn't say this with Ned around, but that MBV cover is the only MBV that I've felt the urge to listen to in several years - for me it captures both what MBV were best at and what Wire were best at (or one of the directions of Wire, anyway) better than either their main output or the original track. Really transcendent. Would like to jog my memory on a few of the others before voting, but can't really see voting for anything else.

boing boom love tshak (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

I shouldn't say this with Ned around

You're fired etc. (It's not like I listen to MBV every second of the day or anything; months go by between relistens.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

bark psychosis. not because it's that great but i love BP and don't want to vote map ref.

sonderangerbot, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

If I can get at least ten serious yesses I'm willing to cajole/pester/organise an ILXWIRECOMP

Joe Pass Filter (MaresNest), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

I am SOOO IN on a Wire comp!!

Fetchboy, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

I'd do something. You might want to ask on IMM or in a separate thread if you really want to get people involved.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

Let's see how this pans out by the end of today then I'll start a seperate thread, still on ILM.

Joe Pass Filter (MaresNest), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

OK, I may have some time next week so let's do it!

Mark G, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

I obviously need to hear this, but it looks to be out of print. Worth picking up 2nd hand, would you say?

Neil S, Friday, 12 February 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

Godflesh, Lush, Bark Psychosis, Lee Ranaldo, MBV, Main... how do I even choose??

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 12 February 2010 17:04 (fifteen years ago)

It's not like I listen to MBV every second of the day or anything; months minutes go by between relistens.

Fixed Ned's typo.

I am SO in on this. (and I already have a song picked out)

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 12 February 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

Worth picking up 2nd hand, would you say?

Oh hells yes. Semi-stupid money on Amazon US ($23) but 7 quid on Amazon UK.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 12 February 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

i will do this i will do this i will do this wire covers comp

cholula bankhead (m bison), Friday, 12 February 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

xp thanks Gerald, I'll look into it!

Neil S, Friday, 12 February 2010 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

I probably could be convinced to be in on a Wire covers comp too!

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 12 February 2010 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

Fixed Ned's typo.

Out.

Meantime, I like me this ILX comp idea. I'd be willing to do one of my spoken-word turns on...something.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 February 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

You should be involved with "Ambitious" Ned! Lots of good spoken word opportunity at the end there.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 12 February 2010 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

Not really fair with MBV on the list, but my second favorite is definitely the Bark Psychosis track (which is also my second favorite thing they've done after the initial 12").

Spencer Chow, Friday, 12 February 2010 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

Actually after "Nothing Feels"/"I Know".

Spencer Chow, Friday, 12 February 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

It always makes me think of the guy from New Order's "Fine Time" at an after party.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 12 February 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

Someone wants to do the music, I'm in.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 February 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

xpost -- haha that's a great description!

"Most of all...you got loooove rhumba."

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 February 2010 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

(FWIW, I would love to do "Ahead" if this compilation goes ahead)

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 13 February 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

OK, I'm going to stake my claim on "Marooned"

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 13 February 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

There's a copy of this comp sitting at my local used store for like $3, it's been there for over a year. Maybe I should get it?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 13 February 2010 03:37 (fifteen years ago)

Um, yes?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 February 2010 03:37 (fifteen years ago)

Depends on location of stores selling 3$ worth of candy in yr area.

I'm afraid we're dealing with Garth Crooks (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 13 February 2010 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

right, I shall earlybagsy "Too Late"

But also, will give it some thought...

Mark G, Sunday, 14 February 2010 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

just fyi, ILX Wire Covers Compilation 2010

Fetchboy, Sunday, 14 February 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

So are there tracks on here anyone can't stand at all? Even the weirder bits are intriguing to me.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 19 February 2010 01:15 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 1 March 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

20 votes, not bad... I voted for Laika in the end, though I knew MBV would take it. Good to have a dedicated thread to this album.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 1 March 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

I sorta hate Scanner's 'Eardrum Buzz'

Slacker Bilk (S-), Monday, 1 March 2010 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

I was the other Laika voter. And Wire clearly liked it considering what Mags McGinnis (nee Fiedler) does in her spare time thesedays.
