Three Questions:
~Who was cooler?
~Who was the better song writer?
~Who had the better voice?
― acer, Friday, 12 February 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)
Jim Morrison on all counts, surely anyone who was in The Dears is better than some dead washed-up grunge hippie, right?
The Dears:

Wait... which one is Jim, again?
Cobain on all three
― lukevalentine, Friday, 12 February 2010 20:42 (fifteen years ago)
I like Morrison better musically, and also deem him a bit cooler.
But Kurt Cobain was much more needed at the time. Jim Morrison arrived at a time that would have been a golden age of music regardless of his existence or not, and a lot better music than The Doors existed at the time anyway. Kurt Cobain arrived on the scene at a time when music was about to be strangled by hair metal, rap, bad mantra-dance and sour FM synths and bad sampling synths. 1987-1991 was a horrible time for music, and grunge at least brought a positive change in the right direction.

Was just thinking about Jim Morrison today. Remembered that his poster was in the vampire's lair in The Lost Boys. One of the few things I can remember about that movie. Has KC been in any vampire movies, in poster form?

ladies?

1. Cobain2. Cobain3. Cobain
the doors have one good song and that is Peacefrog the rest is just awful
― 3:16 (jjjusten), Friday, 12 February 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)
I'd say they both had pretty cool voices. Both could do a good blood-curdling scream. I'm inclined to say Cobain was the better songwriter, since he wrote most of Nirvana's music by himself whereas I think the Doors was more of a collaborative writing effort. I don't know who was cooler.
― o. nate, Friday, 12 February 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

I'm just saying it's hard to which parts of which songs should be credited to Morrison.

the exposed parts, presumably

Cobain obviously the better songwriter. don't really care about the who's cooler question. Better voice is kinda a toughie

― vacation to outer darkness (Abbott), Friday, 12 February 2010 21:02 (fifteen years ago)
weird part of it is that hair metal power ballads were definitely more trad, polished, brill building songwriting oriented than anything nirvana did.

I read the Morrison bio as a kid and found him tedious in his self-importance but the Nirvana idolatry of the early 90's left me perplexed and, while I respect the right to suicide, especially if you find yourself married to Courtney Love, I found the whole thing self-indulgent, somehow.

the doors invented goth. and nick cave. some people can never forgive that.
― scott seward, Friday, 12 February 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)
The glam/theatrical element was why I liked The Doors so much (even if it was only on a "greatest hits" level).
However, the angsty, pissed-off loner in the corner element was why I liked Nirvana so much.

it's really a toss up over who does the better version, the guitar solos are better on the beatles version but the doors version has that whole creepy vibe with the son loving his mom so much
i'd say if you're a dylan "lyrics" kind of guy, you'd prefer the doors cover, if you like great guitar solos, you prefer the beatles original

no no no obviously you guys aren't following. Jim Morrison was the first one to write those lyrics and he called it "The End"

he didnt add anything to anything. it is all his song. look up the end by the doors and its origins
― ianpope, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 03:40 (fifteen years ago)
lenny kravitz. so you're saying lenny wrote that when he was 6 and the doors did a cover of it. because la woman by the doors came out in 71 and lenny kravitz was born in 65

besides the doors book has been checked out for weeks anyway, it's not like it would even be there tomorrow anyway
as far as lenny goes, i don't think it's crazy to say he wrote it when he was 6. michael jackson wrote billie jean when he was like 5, it's not that crazy

there are no similarities between the beatles the end and the doors the end. theres no arguing it because its a fact

no offense but WTF does that even MEAN??

i mean here's the thing, YOU'RE WRONG, way more wrong than me and what else can you say to that except "no YOU'RE wrong"?? i mean we're just going to go in circles, there's no point to it.
the beatles had great songs, so did jim morrison, no one will ever be able to prove that the original or cover is better, PERIOD
just listen to the music and love it all, there's no point in picking sides here
― "goof proof cooking, I love it!" (Z S), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 03:55 (fifteen years ago)
ill just say that the beatles the end and the doors the end were written at two different time periods by two different people and neither one inspired the other. they are both original works by morrison and the beatles
― ianpope, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 04:05 (fifteen years ago)
"both original" doesn't make any sense, there can be only one original, that's why it's called "original"
― "goof proof cooking, I love it!" (Z S), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 04:07 (fifteen years ago)
i think what you meant was "they are both VERSIONS of the one original work by the beatles"
anyway no offense but u obviously don't get it. i have to work in the morning, peace
― "goof proof cooking, I love it!" (Z S), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

You say Jim Morrison wrote all those songs, other people here say The Beatles wrote them. It's a controversy and I don't see how anybody is going to ever be able to objectively know for sure who is the true author.
I will say this about The Doors, they were one motherfucker of a cover band. Some of my favorite songs by other artists that The Doors made their own are:
Soul Kitchen, originally done by XShip Of Fools, originally done by John CaleTouch Me, original by Samantha FoxFive To One, original by Dolly Parton

I think its all in the answer to the name of the band : The Doors.
Let me explain.
What is behind DOORS??????
Thats right you guessed it: A ROOM.
Couldn't this 'Room' be perhaps alluding to the original Beatles song?
- the one then done by Jimbo and the boys????
Think about it.

Overall, I gotta go with Morrison simply because he has more of a track record to go on, and definitely went out on a two-release high: Morrison Hotel & LA Woman. IMHO those records are in a photo-finish with the first two Doors LPs for their best work.
Considering the questions: Morrison was a brilliant writer, but all indications are that he was a total fucking prick. In some ways that adds up to not particularly cool in my book. Cobain may have been a lesser writer (though he had potential for greatness) but seems to have been a pretty OK guy. Ergo, reasonably cool.
Writer: Morrison
Cool: Cobain by a nose.
Morrison had the pipes, hands-down.
― ImprovSpirit, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)
Morrison was certainly a technically better singer, but his vocals don't get me in the gut like Cobain's. Way prefer Nirvana to the Doors - more raw emotion, less flabby twiddle-dee-dee and NOISIER.
