no, progressive thrash isn't as stretching-it-out as proper prog or hard prog - the songs are still short, but longer than your average thrash song. classic megadeth leans "progressive" really imo. but like here:

my pleasure! atheist really is the king of prog thrash (to the point that it's really more prog than thrash imo)

i still have my tape copy of no more color.
― scott seward, Friday, 12 February 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)
All I have is Mental Vortex; what else do I need? And don't try to sell me on Bulldozer; they're okay, but not much more.
― neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Saturday, 13 February 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)
You need No More Color for sure, though it's to my ears not as complex as Mental Vortex. But it's crammed with hooks.
I think Bulldozer at their best are great, and at their less-than-best are, yeah, just good. But great Bulldozer is great & their atmosphere is fuckin' raaaaaad imo
― Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Saturday, 13 February 2010 01:16 (fifteen years ago)
I reviewed their live album for AMG, and liked it okay, and some of their studio stuff hits the spot, but honestly (and this isn't a joke based on names) I prefer Tank.

I just have a thing for how ahead of the curve Italian thrash bands were on atmosphere - so many Italian bands go for this 'verb-drenched cavernous sound that predicts early black metal, it's really cool to my ears

best thread on ilx

When I met my wife and we lived together for a few years and she only listened to mix 106.5, which was cool because I had only started posting on ILM a year or so before and was just discovering pop music for myself. So there was lots of Rihanna and Natasha Beddingfield and Leona Lewis, etc.
Then I was packing the house up when we were moving and discovered deep in the back of a cabinet a small stash of metal CDs that included No More Color. Such a great album! Of like, 5 CD's that she chose to keep from her secret metal former life. I'm going to give her a big hug when I get home just thinking about it.

ok now it's really the best thread on ilx

Man, tell that lady she doesn't have to keep metal secrets and then thank her for the Coroner.
― Jim Gillette's unused octave (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 4 June 2015 19:29 (ten years ago)
No More Color: still brilliant.
I guess I'm going to need to get a copy of Grin at some point? Just for completeness' sake at the very least.

Like, I listened to this album a lot back in the day and maybe forgot how great it was; it turns out it's exactly what I've been looking for lately in the proggy thrash department. Technical but still catchy as hell.

All 5 Coroner albums - R.I.P., Punishment for Decadence, No More Color, Mental Vortex, and Grin (but not the s/t rarities compilation, sadly) have been remastered and reissued on CD (and I think vinyl is coming).
― grawlix (unperson), Saturday, 14 July 2018 18:05 (seven years ago)
Nice. There's another Coroner thread where I mentioned getting Mental Vortex and seeing Grin but I didn't know they did the first three, too.
― Paul Reverse and the rediaRs (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 14 July 2018 18:24 (seven years ago)
Yeah, but weirdly, it seems like the first 3 are imports and the last two aren't? I just bought all 5 on Discogs and the first three were $15-16 each and the last two were only $11 each.

coroner >>>>>>>
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Saturday, 14 July 2018 19:04 (seven years ago)
This is totally my metal era, but I somehow managed to miss Coroner. Currently rectifying this and having my varicose veins cured by the solo in ' Son of Lilith'.
― The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Saturday, 14 July 2018 21:08 (seven years ago)
Nice
xxp yeah I'm looking at the one-stop for my job and MV and Grin are listed as $9.99 MSRP, the first 3 at $23.99! Really weird.
― Paul Reverse and the rediaRs (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 15 July 2018 13:29 (seven years ago)
All five are now on US Spotify, too (before now, only Mental Vortex was up there).
― grawlix (unperson), Sunday, 15 July 2018 13:56 (seven years ago)
I picked up Grin today and what a weird record. I know a lot of groove-influenced 90s albums by established bands are counted as sellouts or whatever but this seems more like a not entirely failed experiment. I mean it's still recognizably Coroner, and they can't resist throwing some flourishy riffs in even in the most simplistic groove riff.
