MODEY LEMON 0wnZ you

Park Slope Brooklyn just got its first live music venue for rock n roll, called South Paw. It's a good one - they share a booker with Maxwell's. And it's two blocks from my house! Anyhow last night I went there for the first time to hang out with my friend Mike, who'd gone to see a band called the Witnesses that his band's going to share a bill with in a week or two. The venue is kind of typical lounge/low upholstered chairs/stage thingie, moodily lit. Our waitress was stylish - black button-up shirt and a necktie and a shock of black hair falling in her face. Everyone was halfway between indie and professional. The Witnesses were okay, a kind of MC5/Rolling Stones combo, groove-oriented guitar rock w/many classic fillips and familiar breaks for solos etc. They finished and our group was about to head out but we figured we'd give whatever band was up next a shot. We forgot about it, everyone did, the whole joint sort of talking and planning what to do next with their evenings, and the rickety amateurish curtain on stage gets pulled jerkily back just as these two people on stage begin the first song of what was to be an utter abolition of all plans, all conversation, all sense. All talk stopped. Beers were paused mid-sip. Punchlines remained unuttered. They started at level 10 and they stayed there for about the same number of songs. As the curtain tugged sporadically shut all in the room shouted it down, and it reversed course, opening again for one more song. We all felt very bad for whoever was about to follow them. The Black Sabbath that the sound guy played during the intervals suddenly sounded limp and vacuous. Any rumble between these guys and take-your-pick of the retro-rocker garage outfits dominating the headlines could only end one way. They were certainly a throwback, to something, but you simply had no time or inclination to draw schematics in your head of "influences" and whatnot. A drummer, who was incredibly fast and tight for someone who gave every impression of "Animal" off the Muppet Show, fast fast wrists that looked honed on swing jazz at some point in his formative years; a guitar player and singer who would have 0wNed us whatever he looked like, just happened to be the hunkiest most beautiful androgyne in the room. And that was the whole band. They'd brought their own PA.

I borrowed Mike's cellphone and immediately called my roommate 2 blocks away. 'Get here immediately." When Modey Lemon were done the room was flustered, like they'd just seen a really good play, or like they'd just finished at the log flume. Everyone kind of giddy and weirded out, not wanting to leave for awhile, just to preserve this feeling.

Anyhow I guess this question is about if you've ever been totally blindsided by a live act before.

Tracer hand, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not quite so spectacularly, perhaps, but I'm trying to get a sense of what this band was exactly like. A polysexual Lightning Bolt with a guitar instead of a bass or what?

I don't normally go out to local shows to see what's on, but then again I'm naturally suspicious of music around here. Low and Timonium -- who may not be blindsiders per se but are definitely possessed of presence -- are two of the groups who I first encountered live, the former before they had even released anything, who made me go, "Wait, what? Genius!"

feh - just listened to their mp3s and they sound kind of unremarkable - guess you had to be there! which is the point of the question. i suppose now i've ruined modey lemon for everybody, like telling you about narnia right before you open up the wardrobe. sorry!

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If Julian got hit with accusations of Reedy vocals, he's got nuthin' on this guy... (perhaps I should note that this Insta-Judgement© has been made based on a 40% downloaded mp3 of "You Bug Me", which I must unfortunately concur ain't all dat so far)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and they sound kinda like a more muscular, less lethargic strokes (who in turn sound kinda like a less muscular, more lethargic stooges, so...)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"big bang" was their first song i think

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you're not alone in this experience. i was totally knocked out when i saw them earlier this year, and seeing them last friday at the mercury lounge confirmed it wasn't a one-off. the record is pretty good, much much better than the mp3s, but nothing compared to the shows. live, they remind me a bit of the soledad brothers - i think both bands have a similar take-no-prisoners garage/blues assault thing. definitely something that makes think, "yeah. the devil's m

one month passes...
They played a one-off show last night at Luxxe - a break from recording an album in Pittsburgh - not quite as good as at South Paw maybe (also I knew what to expect this time around) and in some ways not as "good" as some of the bands that preceded them on the bill - yet they still managed to make everyone else seem like children playing at rock n roll, while they're actually doing it. I checked the scene in the minutes before they started; aimless lounging, slight boredom; too early for anyone to be drunk, folks wondering how long it would take Dead Meadow to get up there in the stuffy back-area where the stage is... as ML starts at breakneck speed, just scratching and gnashing it out, everyone snaps out of it, relieved to abandon their conversations, to face the gale of this stuff.

I remember thinking: these are two guys who simply have found their purpose.

Mitch re: "reedy" voice - if the reed is quite sharp on one side and is slicing your eyeball out, then yes!!

it's all about "Coffin Talk"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

"children" vs "actually doing it" binary = k-lame. ALL the bands were actually doing whatever it was they were doing OBV. but it was like the others NEEDED it less? in any case, i forgot about them, filed them under "hobbyists". i don't know what the ML's day-jobs are but you get the feeling that if they were not allowed to play rock music they would simply move to a place where they could.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Happened to me with Disco Inferno, and I think I've never quite recovered from it. I've certainly never been that excited about a band again after that night at The Harvey Milk Bar.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 26 August 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

weird, I'd heard that they were kinda dull - maybe my friend saw them on an off night, sounds like the show you saw was just about all you could ask for.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i meant reedy as in = lou reedy but you prob already knew dat

mitch lastnamewithheld, Monday, 26 August 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

(and it's not really that lou reedy anyway)

modey lemon are good friends of mine. pittsburgh will finally rise and conquer!

john fail (cenotaph), Monday, 10 March 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

They play like Motorhead without necessarily looking like them, which is a plus.

Their drummer Paul is in a bunch of other bands as well. I had one of them (Midnite Snake) play my birthday party at Pianos last month and they were the torch. Big big loud heavy rock trio that sounded just like High Rise. They filled the room with smoke from a fog machine because Paul said "If you can't see what you're doing then the music makes you take a trip with your mind". The sound guy didn't wanna take this trip and confiscated their fogger after a while, and when he went to pick it up he got sprayed right in the face.

No, I'm in London but I'm still on their mailing list. I wish I could have been there, they're completely insane. Are they still playing with that bass/keyboard player?

Dude I LOVE mosurock's last post.

Oh man, this band had completely disappeared in the recesses of my brain. Pulled up 'The Curious City' on Spotify just now and it's re-blowing me away.

Everyone's a closet ned. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 21:39 (eleven years ago)

“Enemy” is a perfect rock song, captures that same intense contempt of the Stooges without aping them outright

bendy, Wednesday, 25 May 2022 01:21 (three years ago)

I totally forgot about this band. I had The Curious City on CD back in the day. I'm going to listen to this again in the car this weekend.
