god bless Saturday

itchy rainbolt (clotpoll), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

I'm trying to remember the U2 one. Is it from Past Gone Mad? "If I ever end up like U2 I'll cut my throat with a garden tool" or something like that.

Maltodextrin, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure it's from "Past Gone Mad"

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

.. to say nothing about the "Session Musician" !

Mark G, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 08:42 (fifteen years ago)

...and I'll say that again on the repoll.

Mark G, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 09:41 (fifteen years ago)

I think I'm going to take his advice and get a Bill Haley LP.

Ian Curtis:

"Even in Manchester
There's two types of factory there
One makes men old corpses
They stumble round like bust dogs
One lives off old dying men
One lives off the back of a dead man
You know which one
You know which Factory I mean"

Michael B, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

Not a lyric, but hasn't he had a go at Stiff Little FIngers in an interview for being a perrenial covers band?

I suppose if interview opinions/slaggings were to be included the list would be 3-8x as long.

Department of Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification (S-), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

"I'm proud of the way I've avoided prison, but if we carry on like this, we're gonna end up like King Crimson."

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

Not from lyrics, but from this interview I just read: http://thequietus.com/articles/03755-becks-induction-hour-a-mark-e-smith-interview-about-the-lp-that-nearly-felled-the-fall#

"Liam (Gallagher)’s got a good voice but it’s a shame he hasn’t got someone behind him cracking the whip more."

"Do you know what I like? ‘I Predict A Riot’ by The Kaiser Chiefs. Read the lyrics to that. [laughs for about half an hour]"

Jouster, Friday, 19 February 2010 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

I will miss him when he's gone, truly.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 19 February 2010 01:14 (fifteen years ago)

Don't know who Peter Conkerton is but he can go take a flying fuck at himself afaic

Grant Singer, Messageboard Zinger (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 February 2010 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

wait, this poll closes in 2 YEARS??

Australia, the world's suburb (SeekAltRoute), Friday, 19 February 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

My secret shame is that I can almost never understand Smith or Fall lyrics, though I dig the Fall sound so I listen to 'em.

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Friday, 19 February 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

That's a great article. He sounds so coherent. I like the comment the interviewer made about being unable to explain The Fall. They are one of my favourite groups but I don't bother to try and explain or turn anyone on to it, it would be just too hard. I mean I might play it to unsuspecting people now and then but I wouldn't speak explcitly about them, build them up etc.. How could you?

Actually I don't do as much of this- trying to convince people of something or anothers merits as much as I used to. I used to have quite a bit of success as a young person but now I can't really be arsed- Just put on the music. Do you like it?

Thats about it.

Hinklepicker, Friday, 19 February 2010 06:33 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, that bit of youtube on the article is worth a million words, as they say.

Mark G, Friday, 19 February 2010 06:54 (fifteen years ago)

wait, this poll closes in 2 YEARS?

Yeah, I biffed the date. Asked mods to change it.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 19 February 2010 10:56 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it can't be done (adding / removing options or changing the date)

Mark G, Friday, 19 February 2010 11:05 (fifteen years ago)

Don't know who Peter Conkerton is but he can go take a flying fuck at himself afaic

― Grant Singer, Messageboard Zinger (Noodle Vague), Friday, February 19, 2010 1:18 AM (12 hours ago)

Pete Conkerton for a long time almost single-handedly ran the excellent Biggest Library Yet Fall fanzine and comes across as a thoroughly nice chap in the limited dealings I've had with him. Also massively into and knowledgeable about Lovecraft.

So I'm all for cutting him some slack.

'virgin' should be 'wizard' (GamalielRatsey), Friday, 19 February 2010 13:21 (fifteen years ago)

they never got it right

Trip Maker, Friday, 19 February 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

xpost

Okay to rephrase:

The dick that wrote this idiot list needs to check themself on account of how if it wasn't for the tags that directly referenced the artistes they think they're referencing, the rest display a pretend Tory desperation to validate a "Tradition" that needs to go take a flying fuck at itself.

Jack Straw is not a racist cunt (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 20 February 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

i.e. I would rather be dead than live in a world where the Beatles are "superheroes" and if that's all you've got then maybe you need to do long slow exhumation of yr twatboredom head.

Jack Straw is not a racist cunt (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 20 February 2010 02:10 (fifteen years ago)

Or possible long slow exhumation of my drinking habits

It cd be worse, I might be a pissed underachieving twat (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 20 February 2010 10:15 (fifteen years ago)

Is there anyone else who talks about bands so much in their lyrics? Is that his "thing"?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 20 February 2010 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

Not really I'd say, apart from often placing stuff in the actual world and having a huuge output.

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 20 February 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

(fsvo "actual")

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 20 February 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

NV, I don't get it.

The Cure - was in no pill

timellison, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 05:18 (thirteen years ago)

gotta mention the MES interview where he was asked his opinion of bob dylan, and his answer was, roughly: 'yeah, i like him...the solo stuff not so much, but more what he did with the traveling wilburies.'

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 05:46 (thirteen years ago)

xpost I know, I couldn't shake off the feeling the whole song was about The Cure!

(that's Athlete Cured, folks)

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 06:20 (thirteen years ago)

gotta mention the MES interview where he was asked his opinion of bob dylan, and his answer was, roughly: 'yeah, i like him...the solo stuff not so much, but more what he did with the traveling wilburies.'

I read a different one where he more straightforwardly said "I am absolutely allergic to that man"

dmr, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

Would have voted for Lloyd Cole if t'were present. Of the choices at hand, would have gone with D. Bowie (but isn't it lookalikes rather than soundalikes?)

That quote re Dylan reminds me of an OPtion mag article c. 1986 where he said Allen Ginsberg 'never should have been let anywhere near a typewriter'...
