Don't Make Me Wait is my favourite of these but i can't imagine that many people feel the same way.

jed_, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

It's probably my 2nd favorite after Play At Your Own Risk.

I DIED, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

Wait, is this the same Level 42 that did "Something About You" and "Lessons in Love"??

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

Great list. Tempted to go with my favorite Yello song ("Everybody!!! Pizza Party!!!" At leaast that's how I always hear it), and I'd for sure vote for "The Mexican" if it was the original Babe Ruth version. But I'm going to surprise myself and go with "Just An Illusion."

xhuxk, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, "Trans Europe Express" and "Planet Rock" seem more great, I guess, but Imagination's is the one I most often want to hear. (And fwiw, I really really love the Peech Boys' song, too.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

"Dirty Talk" is awesome beat Larry Heard at his own game.

yes and "starchild" is a superb track!

jed_, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

when i interviewed Bob Blank yesterday, we kept winding up discussing "Walking on Sunshine" and i hear that one out most often in DJ sets. pretty deathless.

beta blog, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

it's probably considered sacrilege but i've never really liked that track.

jed_, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

a little bit of jazz!

guammls (QE II), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

I went with Dirty Talk, but can't wait for Vol. 2.

I have so many 12"s with so many different versions of Walking On Sunshine...

dan selzer, Thursday, 18 February 2010 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

bit of a weird mix this one...

dog latin, Thursday, 18 February 2010 14:02 (sixteen years ago)

HEY BOLLY BA, HEY BOLLY BA, WOOF! WOOF!

Or words to that effect. Planet Patrol by a whisker over the Peech Boys.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 18 February 2010 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

i decided to follow the example upthread and vote for Just An Illusion.

dog latin, Thursday, 18 February 2010 14:10 (sixteen years ago)

Between the two Kraftwerk tracks for me. Although I love Don't Make Me Wait and Starchild

mmmm, Thursday, 18 February 2010 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

"T.W. Funkmasters* - Love Money"

not sure if i know this song. and not entirely sure that i've heard the level 42 song either.

scott seward, Thursday, 18 February 2010 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

i don't like the male vox on walking on sunshine but most of it, esp in the long version, is str8 fire

sharter the unstoppable ilx machine (history mayne), Thursday, 18 February 2010 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

Bostich or Planet Rock

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 18 February 2010 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

bostich rules.

scott seward, Thursday, 18 February 2010 14:53 (sixteen years ago)

The tracklists of these volumes are so great. The mastering, iirc, is so poor.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

Anyway, voted for Nick Straker Band for one of the all-time boogie tracks.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

I first heard the Level 42 track on François K's Essential Mix CD.

mmmm, Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

This is one of my all-time fave collections. It dives right into disco's "when the cat's away" sense of play in this period. I'm going with the zero gravity soul of "Just An Illusion" here with lots of love for Yaz(oo) (esp. for how they dispense with two verse/choruses by 1:07) and Peech Boys' dub disco and Yello birthing Ruffneck Ft. Yavahn and...

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:34 (sixteen years ago)

"The mastering, iirc, is so poor."

Is it really? I'll have to compare a couple of different versions of "Planet Rock" for comparison now.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

btw did you mean Larry Levan upthread? 'Dirty Talk' predates any Larry Heard stuff (and doesn't seem that similar) right?

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

No I meant Larry Heard and yeah it predating him was what I meant. As for not seeming that similar. . .

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

would have voted for bugger groove over any of these. to be honest.

jusr peeked at vol 2. trak-listing and that one is way harder to choose from.

scott seward, Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

reason i mentioned Levan is because of Street Beat 'Do The Flex' which actually does sound a lot like 'Dirty Talk' (more than Heard stuff) and has something to do with him i read somewhere? don't know what year that's from tho

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

I just listened to "Dirty Talk" and "Beyond The Clouds" and I agree that the similarity is mostly in memory.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 February 2010 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Man "Bostich" is a great track. So is "Dirty Talk". Love the Kraftwerk tracks too, of course, and "Planet Rock". And don't even know some of the others (Level 42, really?).

In the end I am voting for "Bostich" but I feel kind of like I should apologise to Kraftwerk for that.

(Maybe I should be a little more respectful of the "New York" in the comp title and vote for Afrika Bambaataa or half of Klein + MBO actually coming from NYC, but eh)

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 15 March 2010 11:00 (fifteen years ago)

it's ALL GOOD - this is my favorite music in the world, soundtrack to my early 20s -- but after mucho deliberation voting Peech Boys

the mighty the mighty BOHANNON (m coleman), Monday, 15 March 2010 12:05 (fifteen years ago)

IT HAS TO BE YELLO.

System, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

Funny that Trans Europe Express didn't get one vote.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

by default the TEE votes went to Planet Rock...
