Looking forward to this years Primavera. It'll be my first time. Anyone got any tips? Still to book hotel, I've read that it's walking distance from the city centre? True?
Lots of additions to the line up again today. Must see's for me so far are (in an ideal world where nothing clashes and I can remain sober enough to keep a head on things);

There was a lot of (imo) makeweight indie stuff on the announcement today but I still think it's a good bill overall - if I don't have to buy a new computer in the next fortnight or w/e I'm getting a ticket I think. ENDLESS BOOGIE were also announced today, really want to bug out to them

booked my ticket today
― mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)
also Pet Shop Boys, Moderat, Major Lazer, Joker ft. Nomad, Lee Perry, Liquid Liquid, The Slits
that'll do me really

I stayed around Las Ramblas last time (and will again this year), and I wouldn't have tried walking it. The metro is really good, though, and they had a late night bus back to the centre when it was closed.
The big-ticket headliners don't seem to be that exciting this year, but there are loads of the mid-sized bands who I'm quite excited about (including BEAK>, yay!).
― emil.y, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)
The festival site is basically in the city centre. Kind of. Its a big city. Wilco, Pavement, Pixies, Orbital, Pet Shop Boys are some nice headliners and probably one or two big names to come as they usually announce one of the really big things last.
― Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)
for example neil young was the last addition last year
― Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)
i walked to the site one time 2 years ago from near the Sagrada Familia, but then i like walking. i usually got the tram because <3 trams and haet metro.
― mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)
pro-for-con, this is the best festival i've ever been to. no barefoot-tantric-mud-drum-circles or piss-missile-adhd-kids - just excellent music with something for everyone; starting late evening then on till the wee-hours; excellent location at the olympic site on the Barcelona coast, meaning sunshine, sand and shopping in the day and warm nights; crystal clear sound and awesome vantage points even for those who like to stand at the back - no crooked necks or getting caught up in moshpits; and the ticket price and travel cost combined can be as cheap as a Glasto ticket.
I really really wanna make this year. I can recommend Gothic Point as a hostel, although I wish I hadn't said that as last year they were fully booked and I ended up getting mucked about by a few places.
― dog latin, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)
are tickets still on sale, and when are they likely to sell out - does anyone know? I can't afford mine quite yet.
― dog latin, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
Dammit would love to see each and every one of those acts. Too broke to fly to barcelona this year.
― Moka, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
This site actually has some good practical advice on transport etc, and a couple of pointers for hotels: http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/events/music/primavera-sound-festival-barcelona.html
― emil.y, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)
the trams are very funny. especially when the announcements never seem to be able to get the balance between male and female right:
Female voice: Proxima estacion...Male voice: ...CLOT
had us laughing for most of the weekend, but then you kind of had to hear it.
― dog latin, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)
<3 this festival
i'll most likely be there again this year

― carne asada, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)
this is my favourite outside festival by far. probably has something to do with the nice weather and lack of too many brit casuals.
― Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, it's great apart from the ridiculous token system for buying beers.
― joe, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)
yep that is indeed the only bad bit. but then i also bypass that as i'm a bastard. so basically the perfect fest. for me.
― Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)
also its San Miguel sponsoring this time which sucks as Estrella is better
― mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

Seems like Janes Addiction have been added as well. One of my favourite bands from my youth. Never seen them live and I hear that Eric Avery is back playing bass, which should make all the difference. Hearing 'On The Beach' and 'Three Day's' should be excellent.
Also, how easy is it to source non-alcoholic party goods i.e something to smoke?
― AnotherDeadHero, Thursday, 18 February 2010 12:28 (fifteen years ago)
Caught Jane's at the NINJA tour and they were pretty ace though perry's voice is shitty nowadays. Three Days live is always amazing.
― Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 18 February 2010 12:37 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I've heard that about his voice. Not that it was ever outstandingly in tune to begin with.
― AnotherDeadHero, Thursday, 18 February 2010 13:12 (fifteen years ago)
In a live situation they all put in enough effort in though that you can ignore it. Bit like flaming lips.

i was thinking about last year. i wanted to catch Ghostface and it showed him coming on at 1:00. so us lolamericans rolled over to an empty ass venue at noon and were like damn pretty crappy turnout.

Really excited about the Michael Rother group performance now. Esp. after hearing that they will be doing a mixture of Rother solo, Harmonia and (GASP!) Neu! tracks.

looking at the line-up times. is there anyone worth seeing between 10pm and 2.30am (or 1.30 if i like Sleigh Bells) on the Thursday? annoyingly Fuck Buttons and Delorean then clash
Pixies and Major Lazer clash on Friday, as do Yeasayer and Joker
PSBs and Lee Perry clash on Saturday (Sunday morning) gah
― mdskltr (blueski), Monday, 24 May 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)
Orbital + The Field clash too
also wasn't expecting 3am showtimes tbh, lol am old + past it
― I don't want to go into my newt details (ledge), Monday, 24 May 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)
Tortoise or Wild Beasts? Pavement later?
This is my 4th or 5th Primavera, and there's never been so many clashes before. Doesn't seem to be as much late-night 'dance' music as usual either. And really, who thought it would make any sense to have the Field and Orbital on at the same bloody time?
Still, mega-excited for this. Having my outbound flight cancelled dampened my spirits briefly, but managed to rebook onto an early early flight (=more time in absinth bar on Wednesday) and if my flight back gets cancelled what does it matter.

I heard one of the WFMU deejays say that the sets they got artist approval to archive are going to be up for six months.
― Grisly Addams (WmC), Monday, 31 May 2010 20:32 (fifteen years ago)
Orbital were mostly brilliant but it was a short set (we were aghast when they announced "one more" after what seemed like less than half an hour) and they played TWO tracks I've never heard before which i've just learned they are releasing as a single next month. the first track Don't Stop Me was great but the second The Gun Is Good went on far too long and had actually TERRIBLE visuals that looked like they were made in 1991 on Amigas.
enjoyed The xx, CocoRosie and Major Lazer a lot. PSBs were mostly fantastic but really could do without two of the ballads (tho Jealousy was nice) and the Clodplay cover.
― mdskltr (blueski), Monday, 31 May 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)
Orbital were occasionally brilliant, mostly ok, ultimately disappointing. I wonder what The Field was like. PSBs were AMAZING - admittedly I've never seen a proper big-budget pop stage show before. I didn't notice a lull during the ballads, was pretty much carried away with the whole thing.
It was good to see the Pixies, if only because I'm sure they can't keep it going for much longer. Kim looks like your mum, David like your grandad, Frank like his diet plan isn't working out too well, and Joey just hid, with the aid of a baseball cap, about as well as one can on the front of the stage of a major rock gig. It was their usual by-the-numbers set with zero crowd interaction apart from a few 'muchas gracias!' from Kim, who did at least look geniunely happy to be there, unlike Frank.
Fuck Buttons need to up their tempo and/or percussion quotient imo, they basically didn't get properly going until the last track (Flight of the Feathered Serpent of course). Once they got there it was brilliant though.

Some of my hi-lites--Thurs- Sic Alps, Fuck Buttons, Monotonix(amusing for a few songs). Chanced into Chrome Hoof, who were a gas. Mixed about the Fall. Always great to see ME Smith. New album(which I like) dominated the set. Band was sleepwalking and the bass sound was fat and warm instead of dirty and punchy. Big drag.Fri- New Pornographers sounded great. Japandroids, Condo Fucks, Wire all were terrific. The Oh-Sees took the night for me.Sat- Psychic Paramount were great. Wish more people were there. Atlas Sound.Sorry I missed--Liquid Liquid, Moderat, Shellac, Polvo, Lee Perry and Michael Rother/Neu! Music
― janswers, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 18:55 (fifteen years ago)
this is dumb but i was quite taken aback by Liquid Liquid being a bunch of white dudes.
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)
Well I managed to see a fair bit, I think, given some of the terrible clashes;
Thursday
Monotonix, The Fall, The XX, Wild Beasts, Broken Social Scene, Pavement and Fuck Buttons
Friday
Owen Pallett, The New Pornographers, Spoon, Beach House, Panda Bear and The Pixies
Saturday
Real Estate, Michael Rother & Friends, The Slits, Grizzly Bear, Built to Spill, Sunny Day Real Estate and the Pet Shop Boys
I also saw bits and pieces of other stuff drifting around. For me the definite highlights were Michael Rother and Built to Spill.
First timer for Primavera, going back next year for sure.
