the 'oh shit that guy can write songs too' of their respective bands.

solo debut albums had similar origins and are the same sorta minor classic.

+ they have the same beard and look on their face on the covers.

Uh on what planet is All Things Must Pass a MINOR classic?

El Poopo Loco (Pancakes Hackman), Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

lol

love both, this is a tough choice for me

Wrinkles, I'll see you on the other side (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

this might be more fair if we pretend like george harrison died in a tragic accident right after ATMP

iatee, Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

Uh on what planet is All Things Must Pass a MINOR classic?

the planet where it has like 10 good songs and 500 filler songs

iatee, Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

both also involved in some great movies (Life of Brian/Time Bandits vs. Two Lane Blacktop)

Wrinkles, I'll see you on the other side (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

Is that also the planet where a triple LP went to #1 for like 10 weeks, and where everybody in the world knows at least one song from it, but like 99% of people couldn't even name a Dennis Wilson song if you asked them?

El Poopo Loco (Pancakes Hackman), Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:02 (fifteen years ago)

I don't care, you win, it's as major classic

iatee, Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

shoulda been an album track

George Harrison solo career rehab is one of the loudest laughs of the last twenty years. His career is worth a few jewels and his Wilburys collab.

I listened to the Dennis Wilson album a couple of years and couldn't believe that twaddle was compared to Rumours. Fleetwood Mac did a lot more drugs collectively and individually than Wilson ever did, and those guys always sang in tune.

would rather listen to POB than Rumours any day of the week, sorry. do not get ILM's love of the Mac.

wilson vs. mac doesn't seem like a fair or decent fight, and neither does this one.

anyway I like dennis wilson but harrison wins this even though about half his catalogue is awful

A couple of reviews included Pacific Ocean Blue as one of the best seventies studio-rock albums, which I'd accept if Wilson was actually awake while singing into the mic.

do not get the mac either, or why it matters if someone sings 'in tune.'

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Sunday, 21 February 2010 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

uh, george. i love dennis but he doesn't touch a beatle.

ian zamboni, Sunday, 21 February 2010 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

if you don't get why people like fleetwood mac i just don't know what to say, go get TUSK

If you're a punk band, no; if you believe in studio-rock, yes.

I don't know what's not to "get" about Fleetwood Mac: they recorded tough, blues-based pop songs, sung by three very different singers. It's an unfair polarity, but naturally Dennis Wilson would lose.

Inculcate a spirit of serfdom in children (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 21 February 2010 02:16 (fifteen years ago)

Dennis Wilson provided the odd song, but few of them are really among my favourites.
Harrison, on the other hand, was responsible for gems such as "Something", "Here Comes The Sun", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Taxman", "I Want To Tell You", "You Like Me Too Much", "If I Needed Someone", "I Need You", "Within You Without You", "Long Long", "Only a Northern Song" "Love You To", "I Me Mine", "Piggies"... No, this is Harrison all the way. Lots of great solo albums too, whereas Dennis Wilson didn't really release more than one (although that one was good) solo album. So Harrison way ahead in terms of peaks and being much more profilic as well.

'forever' vs. 'something'

iatee, Sunday, 21 February 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

I like "Forever" but it does seem a bit cloying, especially compared to "Something," which I hear as a real stately sort of ballad. Plus the "you're asking me..." bridge is performed with a real emotional charge. In fact, the entire arrangement and performance is brilliant, especially Paul's bass. I never really thought much of the production on "Forever."

George Harrison is disqualified for the entire Cloud Nine album.

Ballistic, Sunday, 21 February 2010 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

That's the only solo album I can relisten to with pleasure!

Inculcate a spirit of serfdom in children (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 21 February 2010 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

Cloud Nine has at least three or four songs on it that are better than pretty much the entirety of Gone Troppo and Somewhere in England combined. I don't hold the Jeff Lynne production against it, because, you know, that's just what people were doing those days. But "Breath Away From Heaven," "Just For Today," "Wreck Of The Hesperus," "Cloud Nine," "Fish On The Sand" and "This Is Love" are all fantastic.
