My friend is traveling to New York next week for spring break: can we make a really good NYC playlist for him?

So this friend of mine is traveling to NYC this Tuesday and he'll only be bringing few hundred dollars, a backpack, and his dreams (essentially).

He asked me if I could make a mix CD or a playlist for him that would enhance his experience, but I figured I'd spare him my shamefully corny playlist ("the Velvet Underground! Television! The Strokes!") and instead tap the ILM collective consciousness for some diverse tunes that epitomize NYC and that would enhance the experience for any bright-eyed twenty-year old from California.

So recommend songs, your own mixes, albums, artists, whatever. It's all good and appreciated.

Here's a small playlist I did spending winter 2007 in NYC.

The Velvet Underground - Pale Blue eyes
The Owls - Isaac Bashevis singer
Jarvis Cocker - Baby’s coming back to me
Marmoset - pass it along
Josh Rouse - Winter in the Hamptons
Cass McCombs - That’s that
Torngat - you could be

Moka, Monday, 22 February 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

PS: There's nothing corny about making a NYC playlist with VU, Television or the Strokes imho :P

Moka, Monday, 22 February 2010 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

I second this one: The Fugs, Slum Goddess (2:00)

Billie Holiday does a nice "Autumn in New York"

This would be incomplete without a recording of "The Bowery" (Hoyt/Gaunt):
