it's a fair question - that rude boy video really does bite m.i.a. pretty hard. rihanna was also covering peper planes in concert for awhile (like everybody else).

i think m.i.a.'s albums are really spotty but her best songs are 10/10 -- i like "space odyssey" a lot more than "bird flu" or "boyz" so i'm more excited about the upcoming album than i was about 'kala'

I own only one Rihanna album (A Girl Like Me), which is pretty meh, but then again the M.I.A. albums I've heard (never owned any record by her) haven't sounded totally impressive either. Rihanna has some great dance pop singles, but so does M.I.A., except that M.I.A. seems to do dance pop with more idiosyncracy and fresher angles than Rihanna, which makes her singles more relistenable. Gotta go for M.I.A. then.

on p/j ballots i have voted for 3 m.i.a. albums and no singles, and 3 rihanna singles and no albums. so, m.i.a., but i do like rihanna a lot. i just think she's spottier and overall less interesting.

but the thing is, enjoying m.i.a. generally necessitates ignoring her p.o.v. whereas pre-rated r, rihanna tended to fit whatever p.o.v. the song demanded fairly easily

I adore both, but my interest in Rihanna is 90% image, 10% music. Kala is a more interesting and fun listen than any of Rihanna's albums. I can't help but feel like these two have nothing in common that would warrent a comparison though. Shoulda been Rihanna VS Beyonce or Gaga even.
