So it begins again Monday! Mailed my check yesterday -- for less than I would like cuz I owe some eyeteeth to Uncle Sam.

i still owe some $$$ to ... wfmu from last timebut i'll still be phoning in a pledge!
haven't really digested the schedule yet but i look forward to ill advised co-host pairings nonetheless

i might do the $180 donation ($15 per month). i've been a bad fmu supporter these past few years.
― shiksa kabab (get bent), Thursday, 25 February 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)
anyone here a Best Show listener?I just quit listening religously after 2 years, and I feel like a dark cloud has lifted from my life.
― Brio, Thursday, 25 February 2010 21:46 (fifteen years ago)
I've given a little more each year, last year sacrificing my donation to my local NPR affiliate to do it. Am considering a Mouse pledge this year, but that's a big jump.

Definitely doing $75 again esp. since /rupture mixes sound great. Not super excited about having to listen to the fundraising for two weeks though.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)
i mainly dig the fundraising programming but even if you don't, i feel like the music content usually improves; shows like sinner's crossroads feeding some of the premium into the setlist increases the hit ratio.

some of my fave shows are for the on-mic banter anyway

― Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 March 2010 03:29 (fifteen years ago)
the banter yesterday between irene trudel and another wfmu host was hilarious. will donate.
― Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 4 March 2010 03:33 (fifteen years ago)
hearing ilx's brian/mackro's name mentioned as one of the pledgers during the best show!
― shiksa kabab (get bent), Thursday, 4 March 2010 04:07 (fifteen years ago)
crucifying Andy Breckman could be ...interesting
― Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 March 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
i listen sometimes, but less now. i'd like to know why you stopped. did you ever call in?
an acquaintance called in a few weeks ago and got pwnd.

I just got home... what did YLT play before "TV Eye"?
― Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 6 March 2010 02:10 (fifteen years ago)
nah, i never called... I can't really describe why I got tired of Best Show without sounding like a fucking hippy but it just started to feel really relentlessly negative and almost culty to me, with constant griping about perceived slights and and a kind of ugly pecking order among the callers.
but I think Sharpling and Wurster are fucking brilliant and hilarious and next-level shit at their best and the show is worthy of its name, which says a lot
― Brio, Saturday, 6 March 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)
Scharpling hates the last few Tarantino films btw
I saw the Violent Femmes at Folk City in '82... Ira booked 'em.
― Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 6 March 2010 02:24 (fifteen years ago)
ugly pecking order among the callers = roffles when callers get convinced of their place in the pecking order though, right? at least scharpling is proving himself to be way more vicious to show regulars than i thought at first. quantity's what's done it for me wrt the best show the last couple years; it's just harder to give a three-hour show like that the attention it deserves, and i wind up tuning out the wurster calls especially.
still worth it for the juggalo episode alone though

OTM
i think one of my favorite calls of the past few years, and one that i've revisited on multiple occasions, is the first call from hugman. the fact that the initial minute or two seems to be scharpling stringing this guy "hugman" along just to GOMP him gives way to this fantastic story from hugman which i don't even want to spoil. it's a great episode all around featuring fine turns from patton oswalt and wurster with an airhorn. iirc it's the 12/30/08 episode.

An idea that popped into my head this morning, which I posted on the Talk's Cheap comments section a few minutes ago: a free version of the iPhone app with the 32k live stream only, and a paid version with the 128k stream, the other three streams, the archives and podcasts. Station needs to start getting paid.

Major excitement in the phone room last night w/ exposure of Andy Breckman's cell number. Best of all, his more personable cardboard-cutout self was there.

have not had a chance to hear John Hodgman-Patton Oswalt sci-fi trivia faceoff from Scharpling the other night.
― Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Friday, 12 March 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)
I'm listening to it right this moment. Funny as expected.

loved this. esp the part where they both shouted "TIME AND RELATIVE DISTANCE IN SPACE!" in unison. and when hodgman said, "TOS or TNG?"

Wish I'd brought some gladiolas to toss at Mlle Braun.
