decade poll explarotory thread

when do people want this to happen? now? this summer? later in the year? next year? are we feeling poll fatigue?

should it be a full decade poll, or just an 05-09 poll like some people have proposed? who wants to run it? etc etc

Also not sure how this applies, since we've run individual year-end polls and there's plenty of underrated albums buried in these threads across the board, along with certain folks' individual ballots.

I don't get the logic here. It's like, okay, let's exclude the 1989 San Francisco 49ers from the NFL playoffs and a potential Super Bowl victory because they are *SO FUCKING GOOD*, it would suck if they rightfully won.

Well, we have to end of this century to get it done. Any later than that and we will be bumping into people trying to conduct polls on the best of the 21st century. All kinds of time...

if you want to highlight overlooked stuff, just exclude the albums that made the top 10 or 20 or whatever of the year polls

i'd say just 05-09 because i'm still exhausted from the end-of-decade stuff from last fall/early winter

& in general it would be cool to have a less repetitive poll -- i think taking specific albums out would be too arbitrary -- anyway we obv want to see how the best of each year stack up against each other pretty much -- taking out specific albums would ruin that -- also it would just produce a pointless contrarian list

yeah totally -- the '00-'04 canon is pretty well calcified and predictable by now but the last 5 years are largely up for grabs

i think you need the time for 2009 to wear off and see if those albums still hold up.

ehh i never really buy that argument -- albums that are <1 year old and albums that are 5/10/20 years old are never going to be on 'equal' footing but you can't really engineer things to work any other way, might as well not overthink whether there needs to be some amount of distance for the right perspective and just let the chips fall where they may.

i think the summer makes the most sense as long as there won't be a lot of posters on ilx sabbatical or something

Do a full decade, don't exclude anything from being nominated, then just do a countdown of 500-401 and fuck the rest.

i really threw this thread for a loop by mentioning the "underrated albums" thing -- i think the goal of the poll should be to set the "ilx canon" so to speak on a certain time period -- whether it's a full decade or half decade is one thing, but i don't want to exclude albums -- i want kala going up against love vs. money

I say: do 05-09 later in the year, using the rankings Tuomas used for the 80s poll. The full-decade poll can wait a few years, then get unleashed when we're bored with that canon. Or else we'll just have 200 albums to exclude.

Whoever's running it, just make sure you have plenty time on your hands. I nominate J0rdan for the images.

yeah definitely use rankings like Tuomas had -- all due respect to lj but i hate crazy "sure give one album 200 points if you want" shit, really lets the zealous strategic voters run things
