anything post 1982 is null and void if you ask me. 12 inch version is best cuz, duh, its way longer. and who wants it to end?

scott seward, Saturday, 27 February 2010 04:31 (fifteen years ago)

I completely agree in theory, but somehow I've probably heard the Substance version more than any other, and have a real fondness for it, something very inviting about how his voice sounds there. Will still probably vote original 12".

Mark, Saturday, 27 February 2010 04:34 (fifteen years ago)

Never seen them live, but this version from 2002 sounds pretty good:

Cannot argue its perfection.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Saturday, 27 February 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

Substance version. it makes me want to cry. probs just a familiarity thing, but it means a lot to me.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Saturday, 27 February 2010 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

Ah yes! Surprised we haven't done this before. Is the 7" single version ALL that different from the 12" to merit inclusion? And, right, who on earth would prefer it? The 98 was nice, I suppose, but pointless. It's not all that different either.

BUT. I used to think 1982 12" vs. Substance was one of my few pop music undecidables. "I'll take a bullet, thank you." But one day I stopped lying to myself. Of course it's Substance! It's wetter, more majestic, more disco. And less Joy Division. "Oh you've got green/blue/grey eyes" is a rarer gem when exiled to the climax. It's got tougher drums and superior vocals. And "Oh it's the last time" is their greatest cum shot after the one that splatters "The Perfect Kiss."

It makes me cry.

Still, a world with only one would be bleak indeed.

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 27 February 2010 05:52 (fifteen years ago)

And yes the EP is perfect from start to finish. "Mesh" is one of the few songs I can play on the guitar.

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 27 February 2010 05:58 (fifteen years ago)

1987 over 1982 12" over 1982 7". What Kevin said. And: 1987 is gentler, more seductive, more a temptation; while just as desperate as the earlier versions. I prefer the drum sound on this version too.

But I love love love the version in the first youtube Mark posted; would probably vote it over 1982 7", for the violence of Bernard's vocals and guitar-playing.

begs the question, when is enough enough (Euler), Saturday, 27 February 2010 09:11 (fifteen years ago)

I was hoping that this would be a line by line because it's got some of my fave Barney lyrics of all time.

The Substance version for the lush quality of Bernard's voice. The 12" he sounds too ragged while on the Substance version he sounds like he means it, even though I absolutely love that whole record.

There's Always Been A Dance Element To (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 27 February 2010 10:09 (fifteen years ago)

Oh you've got green/blue/grey eyes" is a rarer gem when exiled to the climax.

so, so true

what the fuck is this mp3 i have called:

New Order - Temptation (7" Edit) - 5:42 [off Singles]

which sounds totally different than mp3 called:

New Order - Temptation (7" Version) - 5:26 [off Movement]

✌.✰|ʘ‿ʘ|✰.✌ (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 27 February 2010 10:30 (fifteen years ago)

Two things the original 7" version has going for it:

1) The cold opening with just the synth and bass drum, no fade-up. That's big.

2) As mentioned above, does hold "Oh you've got green/blue/grey eyes" until later, like Substance, unlike the 12".

Mark, Saturday, 27 February 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

^yep I voted for the seven inch, but possibly because it was the format I first heard it in. Quite a jacked-up version mastering-wise, on the Singles 2cd from a few years ago. Seems like all the New Order I'll ever need.

David Katz (davek_00), Saturday, 27 February 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

substance version

epic board man (history mayne), Saturday, 27 February 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

Is the 7" single version ALL that different from the 12" to merit inclusion? And, right, who on earth would prefer it?

As far as I'm aware the 7" version is a completely different take to the 12" version. Other people are better at explaining this than me, but it certainly isn't just a case of it being shorter. It has a completely different atmosphere.

Usually with New Order, I like the Substance versions best because those are the ones I heard first. So I like Subculture better as a remix. But Temptation is different, something about discovering both the 7" and 12" versions relatively lately when I had already got all of the albums and finding what seemed at the time primitive versions that they had removed from their available discography got me hooked on these even more. Plus they feel more thematically related to Movement which is my favourite NO album anyway.

I am using your worlds, Saturday, 27 February 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

i think the substance version of 'confusion' is dire, but the others i like more than the originals. there *is* an element of hearing 'substance' first -- and i had heard the og 'confusion' before anything else.

epic board man (history mayne), Saturday, 27 February 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

Actually I had forgotten about Confusion when I wrote that, you are right about the 12" version being much better. I guess my theory is deeply flawed.

I believe New Order covered it in 1987

quite good, iirc

noted schloar (dyao), Monday, 1 March 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

With Temptation, I greatly prefer the Substance version, but I wonder if this is just because I heard that one first.

For the little guitar parts at the beginning. First heard it on the Something Wild soundtrack.

can it compete with the wagon wheel (Eazy), Monday, 1 March 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

Of course it's Substance! It's wetter, more majestic, more disco. And less Joy Division.

I like the earlier versions for just those reasons - more Joy Division, less disco. But I have little use for any New Order after Low-Life.

The 7". Much prefer the cold opening to the fade-in.

SS, I don't think Temptation was ever included on Movement?

noted schloar (dyao), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

the 7" off of Singles is special cause it appeared for the first time in CD form on Singles - however it was mastered hot as fuck, get the version off of the Recycle blog for a much better sounding version

noted schloar (dyao), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:24 (fifteen years ago)

oh, wait:

Both the 7" and 12" versions of "Temptation" can now be found on the 2008 Collector's Edition of New Order's 1981 album Movement

not sure, then, what 7" version they included on the reissue...

noted schloar (dyao), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

7" Version.

Mark G, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 11:26 (fifteen years ago)

I've always had the 7". It was the first one they produced themselves and it shows. That snare too damn loud, crushes everything else

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

Cheers dyao that was my issue. I've actually listened to some of the other versions of spotify and I can see their charms.

Missed this poll by mere hours, but I'd have voted for the 12".

(And yeah, that 1981–1982 EP is perfect.)

That's the Substance version.

Mark G, Thursday, 11 March 2010 09:22 (fifteen years ago)

Wait which one's on 'Everything's Gone Green' EP?

Slacker Bilk (S-), Thursday, 11 March 2010 12:30 (fifteen years ago)

That'll be "Everything's gone green", "Temptation" is not on it.

Mark G, Thursday, 11 March 2010 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

The EGG EP has the the title song, Cries and Whispers, and Mesh.

The 1981-1982 EP has all those, plus the original 12" versions of Temptation and Hurt on the flip.

I have duplicates of both the vinyl and cd version of the 81-82 ep if anyone wants to swap for the EGG cd single.

I've always like this Glasgow show for the enthusiastic audience participation. On the downside, Peter Hook looks so fucked, and seems barely keep it together. I guess this was during his booze/coke phase that he says he's now managed to overcome?
