i voted for mungolian jet set based off of the singles i was familar with from years prior, but i'm finally spending some time with the album proper and it is really pretty damn great. it may or may not be the only thing i've listened to for like a week now. that athana remix is esp spectacular once you get over the fact that the dude sounds like a neutered bonnie prince billy

ways in which this differed from my 'true' top 20: added Fall Out Boy from late '08 since I love it more than any '09 album, added a couple of my favorite Baltimore records, Wye Oak and Dan Deacon, in solidarity with whoever nominated them (and STILL was the only voter for Wye Oak), added Evangelista, and bumped Birds & Arrows and Playboy Tre (knew they had no chance of placing), The-Dream (knew it didn't need my vote) and Paramore (kinda feel like the new one was overrated compared to the previous record).

k8 i think your ban actually expired a day or two before the submission date - i thought of emailing you (i wanted electrik red to get your points!) but figured you could see it and would vote if you wanted. soz if this wasn't the case.

re ciara, it's a testament to how strong the songs were that a botch job and possible career killer of an album was still votable for - had to take into account just how much i jammed those tracks. it was kinda hard to assess as an album given how much had been floating around prior to it.

My ballot was pretty much split between R&B and electronic music and the picks you listed all fall into the latter category. The Omar-S is my favorite of those--a DJ mix that consists entirely of his own productions. The Shackleton is on Perlon and fits that label's penchant for fractured techno (ugh I suck at writing about music) but incorporates dubstep as well. Three EPs definitely seemed a bit impenetrable at first--had to spend some time with it before it finally sunk in. The Lawrence LP initially felt a bit slight compared to his other records, but I found myself returning to it pretty frequently to the point where it was probably among my most played albums of the year. Part ambient, part emotionally-charged tech-house, it sits nicely in the background while you're doing work.

The Linkwood and MVO albums were tacked onto my ballot to fill the last two slots since a handful of my favorite '09 albums weren't nominated. I only liked certain tracks on these two.
