POLL: Kristofferson by Kris Kristofferson

I've only had this album for a little over six months after hearing about how good it was for years and years. Turns out that everyone who ever told me that was right. It's definitely become one of my favorite records ever in that short time. Every song fits into the puzzle, and it wouldn't work without any particular one. It's pretty much a perfect album. However, everyone's got favorites. What is yours?

Yeah, this one is the best. Kris has written his fair share of classics, hasn't he? I mean, songs that stand up against the best songs Hank Williams ever wrote. Plenty of not so great stuff in his career, but if you've written "Sunday Mornin'", "Help me Make It Through The Night" etc., you've pretty much earned yourself a place in the great songwriters of all time list. Love Casey's Last Ride here, though, might vote for that one.

full disclosure - kris is my 2nd cousin

tylerw, Saturday, 27 February 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

Wow really? Ever seen him at a family reunion?

"To Beat the Devil" may actually be one of my favorite songs by anyone.

"to beat the devil" is my vote too, because it always sort of cracks me up. but it's really a great record.

We see Kris usually when he comes through town. I always chicken out when it comes to really talking to him. Very nice guy though.

Shit. I just saw him play a couple of weeks ago.
He was playing "Darby's Castle" as I walked in with my best friend.
I need a copy of this.

It's hard to remember what a great song Bobby McGee is sometimes, so over-covered is it - but when I hear a good, and new to me cover, I'm always shocked by its brilliance: Jerry Lee and Gordon Lightfoot have recently drawn me back to it....so, Bobby McGee.

I should get this too. I've been in awe of Sunday Morning Coming Down for years but for some reason never thought to check out its parent album.

Sunday Morning Coming Down brought me to tears at that show, btw

Sunday Morning for sure
but For The Good Times kills too - especially the Al Green version:

"Sunday Morning" for perfectly distilling a certain feeling

nine months pass...

When I'm king, everybody will be issued a copy of this album as soon as they're old enough to operate a turntable/cd player/iPod.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 06:56 (fourteen years ago)

sounds about right!

tylerw, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

three months pass...

I just did the internet a service and scanned the proper original lp cover for the album since there were only total crap versions everywhere else. Thought I'd post it here in case anyone wanted to use it for id3 tags or whatever.

nine years pass...

A friend sold me some old Sports Illustrateds a while back, including the March 31, 1958 issue.

This is pretty amazing (only discovered it when I was looking at Kristofferson's Wikipedia page): there's a little write-up at the back about his college rugby prowess.

"At Oxford he will study English literature to prepare for a writing career--he will also become part of a weird chain of events that starts with a movie about a sociopathic taxi driver and ends with a failed assassination attempt on the 40th president."

clemenza, Monday, 21 December 2020 03:53 (four years ago)

Sometimes I feel like Kris Kristofferson won the cool life lottery. Oxford scholar, helicopter pilot, hit country songwriter, actor, didn't even know about the rugby part, and obviously dashing and charming dude.

He's got the sleepy-eyed early-'70s thing going on better than anybody I can think of.
