Alex Ross - Listen to This

Because I started this thread (The Rest Is Noise by Alex Ross), I feel as if I must start this one.

New Alex Ross book, Listen To This, out Sept. 28.

Ross writes:

The new book offers a panoramic view of the musical scene, taking in Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Verdi, Brahms, Marian Anderson, Frank Sinatra, Cecil Taylor, Led Zeppelin, Björk, Radiohead, Mitsuko Uchida, Esa-Pekka Salonen, John Luther Adams, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Bob Dylan, and the Malcolm X Shabazz High School Marching Band. In the Preface, I say that the aim is to “approach music not as a self-sufficient sphere but as a way of knowing the world.”

Looking forward to this big time. Hope it's not too heavy on NYer columns.

sorta seems like it will be though, right? all of those artists/performers/composers listed are people he's written about extensively in the NYer. Not a terrible thing to have them all compiled though ...

Yeah, I guess so. There's a long tradition of following a landmark book relatively quickly with a collection of previously published pieces.

"There's a long tradition of following a landmark book relatively quickly with a collection of previously published pieces."

So this is how far we've fallen.

Haven't read the whole thing yet. His writing is so enthusiastic and committed I can't help but be a fan even though our tastes are so different. It avoids some of the things that tweaked me about 'Noise' precisely by being a compilation, lacking the pretense of an overview he can just focus even more directly more on what he loves. Chapter on Mozart is inspired, hats off to anyone who sits down with a 190 CD edition of complete works and just inhales it

& also, his chapter on John Luther Adams -- really appreciated that one
