Been listening to his new singles 'The Shrew Would Have Cushioned the Blow' and 'BRKLN CLLN' all day. I think he's already deserving of his own thread.

Moka, Monday, 1 March 2010 05:13 (fourteen years ago) link

it's all about "So Derobe" for me at the moment, but HYPH MNGO was probably my #1 single from last year. Loving the Four Tet remix as well.

mikebee (BATTAGS), Monday, 1 March 2010 07:25 (fourteen years ago) link

for me "Hyph Mngo" is all about the Andrea Saag gospel-house remix now. loving "Brkln Clln" too

plax (ico), Monday, 1 March 2010 11:33 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't really get the rapture this dude seems to bring out in people. Everything I've heard sounds nice and impeccably produced but I'm just not feeling it - Hyph Mngo included.

Matt DC, Monday, 1 March 2010 11:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i like hyph but since then most of his stuff doesnt really sound that distinct from all the other guys doing this sort of post dubstep house/techno thing. all very well put together and sonically you cant fault it and i like the kinda contemplative/'deeper', sort of sub aquatic sound of it all, but it does kinda wash over you after a bit. the new chill out maybe?

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 1 March 2010 12:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Hyph sounds absolutely perfect in the context of Scuba's Substance Mix. Love it.

Joy hasn't changed it up for the new one (Shrew) - still very much the same sound palette. But I like it.

sam500, Monday, 1 March 2010 14:33 (fourteen years ago) link

hype mngo.

This object perpetually attempts to sell itself on eBay. (Stevie D), Monday, 1 March 2010 14:36 (fourteen years ago) link

basically agree w/mdc - i really love "hyph mngo" and "wet look" but not more than tracks by other artists in the same ballpark (gimme subeena, ikonika, guido, greena any day), newer stuff hasn't totally grabbed me yet.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 1 March 2010 16:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, that Andreas Saag Remix is great, I think I prefer it to the original for aforementioned gospel quality, It just makes it that much more of an arms flailing to the sky shouting out in euphoria kind of glorious.

We jus' havin' fun, so don't act like you don't want my money, hon (EDB), Monday, 1 March 2010 19:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I haven't heard a ton of his singles, but I like Hyph Mngo and the Four Tet remix quite a bit. What I really love is his "DLDRMS001" mix, which I don't even remember where I downloaded it from - but is easily found via google. I have listened to that thing once a day for the past few weeks.

richie aprile (rockapads), Monday, 1 March 2010 20:18 (fourteen years ago) link

kind disappointed by the four-on-the-floor beats, but that's just me. i guess his synths & hooks have been stronger than his drums in general.

increasingly frustrated by Doldrums not being available in the US - neither 001 or the 002 "BB" ever made it stateside afaik, now 001 is going for $75 on Discogs and 002 $40 and up. Why no re-press, is there really no demand??

Wouldn't mind a copy of the alps myself. Saw something recently about how Hard Wax apparently picked up 250 copies of it (of a pressing of 1000). Which is kind of nuts.

Yeah fwiw I don't remember anything like that.

Really enjoyed listening through the new album/mixtape yesterday, definitely reckons with some classic '10s post-dubstep vibes that I thought he had abandoned forever.

like sure all his tracks sound pretty fun on pills whilst chatting up a sociology grad from goldsmiths but when sober it does nothing for me, whereas 2step is magical.

RobbiePires, Friday, 20 August 2021 13:49 (two years ago) link

which I guess is the point of dance music to a degree, but I'm firmly of the school that I should be able to enjoy all functional club music that I like sober, including relentless banging techno or speedcore. I'm not of the temperament to go out and get wasted every weekend, anymore.

RobbiePires, Friday, 20 August 2021 14:00 (two years ago) link

Is Sicko Cell actually his biggest hit?

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 20 August 2021 14:26 (two years ago) link

does he have a hit

bon ivermectin (Murgatroid), Friday, 20 August 2021 14:42 (two years ago) link

I meant in the underground dance music sense. I am familiar with Hyph Mngo duh, but I'm positing that Sicko Cell may have actually gotten way more club play and made a bigger impact?

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 20 August 2021 15:22 (two years ago) link

Someone could poll all the singles & collabs he released between Hyph Mngo and this album, there are so many: https://www.discogs.com/artist/1564482-Joy-Orbison

He's never been my #1 fave or anything but there are a lot of gems.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 20 August 2021 15:23 (two years ago) link

Listening to this now and "Better" is gorgeous

Indexed, Friday, 20 August 2021 16:41 (two years ago) link

fave tracks are that and "layer 6"

bon ivermectin (Murgatroid), Friday, 20 August 2021 16:46 (two years ago) link

big room tech house tool is actually his hit next to hyphn go. At least in the UK clubs. Sikko Cell sounded cheap and tbf still does. But then the post-dubstep lot have generally been a regressive bunch. Blawan was the only geezer in that orbit who had a real talent for detailed, snappy drum sounds, in a way its a shame hes only really making straight techno but also the scene had no room for someone with decent production chops like that. That fram/iddy release just sounded so much more devastating in a club when it come out, it was hard to compete with it. Lavender as well.

Oh and Untold also had good production chops as well. That Purify thing he did very early in Hessle's history is a mad one, like J Dilla on crystal meth. Really mind blowing stuff.

RobbiePires, Saturday, 21 August 2021 02:14 (two years ago) link

as for the last post... flagged, unless it's a joke which surely it can only be. Excellent pastiche though and well-deployed, I think. Got to be a joke, though. Can't not be a joke though, surely. Hysterical.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Saturday, 21 August 2021 04:12 (two years ago) link

I gotta say I don't think Sicko Cell has aged well, possibly because it got rinsed so much at the time that people got fed up of it. Everything else he's done still sounds good to me today.

paolo, Saturday, 21 August 2021 08:42 (two years ago) link

Loving the new one too, I've barely been listening to club music since lockdown started but am prepared to make an exception for this. Also loving that he's made a drill beat, would love to hear him do more of that. As far as I know that sound hasn't crossed over into club music but like I said I'm not up to speed with it so who knows.

paolo, Saturday, 21 August 2021 08:45 (two years ago) link

Also I can't think of any other vinyl releases that have been described as mixtapes, so that's a first for my record collection

paolo, Saturday, 21 August 2021 08:49 (two years ago) link

I really enjoyed this walking through the city centre at 7.30am this morning, just the right mix of Four Tet delicate sentimentality and microhouse trippiness for the sun rising. But even though the beats and basslines are fully present I wouldn't really think of this as "club" music.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 25 August 2021 20:47 (two years ago) link

Nice précis. The tracks are too short, for a start, but I suspect you mean something else.
