Back Like That (makeitpop), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

I would like to vote for "AN EYE CANDY THAT MAKES YOU SAY AHH"

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

Big Sean is the most laughably worthless, so I'll vote for him

waka yoga flame (some dude), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

don't really know why i'm taking this seriously but i voted freddie gibbs, he seems halfway competent.

r|t|c, Monday, 1 March 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

i voted 4 pill

if it was worst then i'd vote for j. cole

waka flocka pedia (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

the most lol inclusion is either oj da juiceman who's already on the downward arc of his career (altho i guess you could argue most of these cats won't even have an arc) or wiz khalifa who is already a failed major label artist with no prospects

waka flocka pedia (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

what i've heard from J. Cole was competent and not nearly as bland as Memphis Bleek 2k10 status would have had me assume

waka yoga flame (some dude), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

the OJ inclusion really is strange considering that Waka would 1) fill the same niche 2) hasn't released an album already and 3) actually has a big single at the moment

waka yoga flame (some dude), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

and 4) wasn't on an xxl cover 6 months ago

waka flocka pedia (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

haha yeah im lollin @ oj inclusion too.

as horrendous as last year's freshman class (acc to xxl) was, at least they have like, a half dozen hits among them

jaded scorer (k3vin k.), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

haha that too. it's kind of the Ace Hood thing where probably whoever made the decision didn't even realize they already dropped an album.

waka yoga flame (some dude), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

i'd say last year's group was about equal in hit terms at the time of the issue -- "day n nite" and "i love college" hadn't really hit the charts yet, i think B.o.B. was the only one i'd actually heard on the radio at that point

waka yoga flame (some dude), Monday, 1 March 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

i think i need to impress upon you people just exactly how awful Big Sean is:

waka yoga flame (some dude), Monday, 1 March 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

ah man he looks cornier than rhymefest

waka flocka pedia (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 March 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

that grocery store/paper & plastic line is epically u_u

waka flocka pedia (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 March 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

the cocaine blunts post on this is really good and funny. i like nipsey hussle, wiz khalifa, pill and oj.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O8ujGLQvrM

samosa gibreel, Monday, 1 March 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

Nipsey Hussle is a real thing? I thought Kenan as Quincy Jones was just making up shit in the SNL sketch.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 March 2010 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

nipsey hussle was mentioned on snl??

jaded scorer (k3vin k.), Monday, 1 March 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

i'm dying @ that oj video

nipsey is pretty decent -- he lacks an overt personality but he's often a conduit for classic cali summery rap production & what not -- he's pretty much like the rick ross of california in that he's totally archetypal & cliche but kind of fills a comfort food niche

waka flocka pedia (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 March 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

the only problem now is that he's trying to break out with like, jr rotem productions & sean kingston features

waka flocka pedia (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 March 2010 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

it's no secret he's a nucklehead but that oj video is just like "oh my god, can it be true?" watched it like 20 times first time i saw it.

samosa gibreel, Monday, 1 March 2010 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

i have only heard of 2 of these btw

plax (ico), Monday, 1 March 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

"i'm dying @ that oj video"

this

im on the moon btw (The Reverend), Monday, 1 March 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

is this big sean dude whale's stupid fruity little brother or something?

im on the moon btw (The Reverend), Monday, 1 March 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

i think he's from a Cronenberg-esque future where Kanye, Fabolous and a fly get trapped in a machine that merges their DNA together

waka yoga flame (some dude), Monday, 1 March 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

samosa gibreel, Friday, 5 March 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

Only ones I know are Jay Rock and Wiz, which means that I guess I'll vote Jay.

lol wth

jizzchin (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 6 March 2010 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

nipsey is the only 1 i have actually heard properly cos i jus deleted some mixtape from like a yr ago?

plax (ico), Saturday, 6 March 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

No love for Donnis? He had what I thought was one of last year's best mixtapes, Diary of an ATL Brave. His flow was nothing to write home about, but he was charming enough, and he had great production and some really memorable songs on it. (And a Bun B guest spot never hurts, either).

Evan R, Friday, 19 March 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

two months pass...

i would vote for j. cole for one that i want to go away the most

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 04:38 (fifteen years ago)

man, oj was robbed

teflon donk (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 06:26 (fifteen years ago)

J. Cole has the personality of a stick of celery.

rennavate, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 06:46 (fifteen years ago)

jcole is much better than pill

its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 12:09 (fifteen years ago)

i didn't realize J. Cole was anywhere to go away from. i man, i've heard him on a couple hyped up guest appearances, but is anyone actually listening to his own records? anyway seems like he's less objectionable or soft serve as an actual rapper than his Drake-esque pictures make him look.

Mr. Srehtims (some dude), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 12:30 (fifteen years ago)

I know I've heard a few J. Cole features, butI've barely noticed his existance on any of them.

nakhchivan. nakhchivan. nakhchivan i wanna rock ya (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

j. cole is actually really great, you should at least listen to the warm up

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzGO-oVJDu8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_9pF-dYfyY

really don't get what there is to dislike about him, even if he's not ur "type" of rapper ceratinly he's better than Donnis, OJ, Big Sean, etc.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

such high praise

nakhchivan. nakhchivan. nakhchivan i wanna rock ya (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

i'd rank the freshman 10:

1. J. Cole
2. Freddie Gibbs
3. Nipsey Hussle
4. Wiz Khalifa
5. Pill
6. Jay Rock

^^^ I thoroughly enjoy and check for all of these artists

7. Fashawn

^^ he's not bad but he's kind of boring... Blu >>>> him in terms of Exile collaborators

8. OJ
9. Big Sean
10.Donnis

all 3 of them have songs that I like but yeah... wouldn't go out of my way to hear anything by them

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

gotta say upon reflection this is leagues better than Skinny Jean Reunion 2009

Mr. Zomg 6 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 28 June 2010 03:57 (fifteen years ago)

I genuinely listen to Fashawn, Pill, J Cole and Donnis. I don't actively dislike OJ and Gibbs.

Mr. Zomg 6 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 28 June 2010 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't heard Donnis but he looks wack.

suge ♞ (The Reverend), Monday, 28 June 2010 04:46 (fifteen years ago)

("what an awful cover" i say to the book)

suge ♞ (The Reverend), Monday, 28 June 2010 04:47 (fifteen years ago)

j. col had some weird stage performance tonight at the BET awards, sounded decent enough

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Monday, 28 June 2010 06:35 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

http://nahright.com/news/2010/07/12/video-big-sean-what-u-doin-bullshittin/

this has a disappointing absence of grocery bag lines, but makes up for it with a myriad of traditionally awful punchlines -- i feel foolish even approaching this seriously, but big sean is one of the emptiest rappers that has gotten buzz in a while -- dude really comes off as someone playing dress up who has no idea what to actually DO -- he looks so hilariously stupid in those big ass 2008 fake kanye shades (take that monkey shit off etc) -- he has this unique ability to make his songs feel twice as long as they are -- i swear whenever i watch one of these youtubes i glance down and it's only been 1:30 and i'm just like "the fuck??" -- also in this joint he apes lil wayne's flow so hard, esp in the what i believe to be the third verse

hoos gossage (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 06:43 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

who the hell is big sean

dayo, Monday, 5 September 2011 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

sisilafami, Monday, 5 September 2011 10:09 (thirteen years ago)

big sean's whole career feels like some kind of surreal hoax

big spiritual hat club (some dude), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 04:38 (thirteen years ago)

would have never guessed one of these dudes would have a #1 record

morb derp (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 04:54 (thirteen years ago)

would have never guessed one of these dudes would have ten rings on like a basketball player

nose, Monday, 23 March 2015 01:29 (ten years ago)

i guess this list deserves some credit in the sense that 5 years later three of those guys are making #1 albums and three others are fairly relevant

some dude, Monday, 23 March 2015 01:32 (ten years ago)

i really like dutch rebelle

maura, Monday, 23 March 2015 02:39 (ten years ago)

wondering who's on the list so far if tink and fetty wap are among the also-rans

maura, Monday, 23 March 2015 02:40 (ten years ago)

shout out to Donnis

alpine static, Monday, 23 March 2015 06:31 (ten years ago)

that category includes people who will make the final list @maura

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 23 March 2015 08:21 (ten years ago)

well that's confusing. why are you voting for "the 10th freshman" if some of the other 9 are among the options?

some dude, Monday, 23 March 2015 11:35 (ten years ago)

well otherwise you could work backwards & guess who the 9 winners are

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 04:27 (ten years ago)

if it wasn't too late i would have voted Dreezy

Shmurda, Makonnen and Vince Staples, huh? man, kudos to XXL for digging deep and uncovering these rappers to watch

alpine static, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 06:11 (ten years ago)

lol

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 06:14 (ten years ago)

well it's kind of a no-win situation, right? Like it's ridiculous they're listing guys with major label signings but if they drop in a collection of unknowns the question is who the fuck are these guys.
i would welcome some intros to the lesser knowns, Kap G doesn't sound bad at all on first contact.
