oh well
i really like the supposed "street single" w/ autogoon emeritus plies http://usershare.net/5jl8sln9en8w# ("white girls fun, cuz all them swallow" - algernod plies, goon m.d.)
it definitely sounds as good as the good album tracks on 'the recession' -- has that laconic kingpin feel

imo plies doesn't need to make solo records, he can just be ridiculous for 12 bars on other people's records every now and again for all i care
there's something kind of funny about jeezy having a street single, his pop singles sound like everyone else's street single

it's kinda crazy to me that jeezy seems immune to the big flop single, at least when it comes to his first joint off a new album
― gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)
i think him not actually being that big a singles artist chart-wise makes him kind of flopproof. i mean if "Lose My Mind" hadn't taken off i don't think anyone would bat an eye and they'd just move on to the next single (is it still supposed to be a Beyonce collab?).

it's weirdly lacking in that "who dat" overwhelming energy but i guess that's intentional -- i think it's kind of a banger tho, love the beat & it's cool to hear jeezy do a 'concept' track like this -- i think it's kind of a banger tbh

You see, I disagree about the beat. I like it but I don't love it. This just doesn't sound like a single to me, but a deeper album cut.
Niggas still wearing fruity stones... man who does that!!?

This has been pushed back yet again. looks like 9/28 went from being a huge release date to merely a decent one, what with T.I. pushing his back too.

this is a dynamic that really kinda fascinates me. what is it about the context of hearing a song on the radio vs. (say) hearing it on your headphones in your bedroom that can make it instantly more likeable? this has happened to me with all kinds of stuff, and it definitely happens a lot with jeezy where (i guess) the big production has more space to breathe in my car, but i feel like it's about more than production style.
????????
― p.m.s.b. (pre-mall smoke bomb) (zorn_bond.mp3), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:34 (fourteen years ago)
I can't speak for J0rd but for me "Lose My Mind" definitely went from a good song to a great one when it hit heavy rotation for a number of reasons: it held up to repetition, it felt a lot ballsier as a radio hit than if it was just a 'street single' or album cut, and it just stuck out like a sore thumb next to all the R&B and Young Money shit it was sharing playlist space with. and yeah, the beat sounds good on a car stereo.
― some dude, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 18:23 (fourteen years ago)
yeah part of it is the context of other songs on the radio, part of it is hearing something on decent speaker system & part of it is the repetition of hearing something a lot and that altering your opinion on it
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 18:53 (fourteen years ago)
i dig this mysterious phenomenon but sadly they don't play young jeezy on the radio where i live. but like, i only really fell in love with lady gaga when i started listening to the radio regularly at a job i started this summer & not as if this is not a rehash of what some dude posted (it just stuck out like a sore thumb next to all the R&B and Young Money shit it was sharing playlist space with) & age-old cliche wisdom but there's something to be said for 1. having no control over what song is played next and 2. the way songs are arranged demographically & musically on a radio playlist that got me thinkin good n hard about how different songs make do with similar means, w/o breaking confines of a station's narrowly defined aesthetic. & when you come out of a drought of garbage and one of your jams comes on it's a lot more potent than loading up a youtube or w/e
― samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 21:57 (fourteen years ago)
i think a part of this effect also has to do with the communal quality of radio just knowing that tons of other people are hearing it makes it seem somehow more potent

― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 22:15 (fourteen years ago)
i've never got the "communal experience" thing w/radio, ever. if i'm by myself listening to it, it doesn't even feel like anyone else is. communal listening is when there are other actual people with you.
not that i ever listen to the radio any more, but hearing a song out and about, in the wild, not of your own accord, can def have a sorting-wheat-from-chaff effect. you have a very honest and instinctive reaction to them, and it can be surprising to find that you welcome hearing certain songs that, played evaluatively in one's bedrooms, don't seem that special. i guess i get that in shops, clubs, anywhere w/piped music.
but pretty much everything about the radio suxxx and i wouldn't miss a thing if the entire medium was to vanish right now.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 22:44 (fourteen years ago)
what i've just posted notwithstanding, i honestly don't understand why i'd want to let some twat radio presenter decide what songs i'm going to listen to when i can do that so well for myself. and then TALK OVER THEM ALL LIKE A TWAT! even before the internet, when i had no choice but the radio, i'd spend half the time yelling at presenters to stfu for one goddamn minute. have never heard one that i haven't hated.

yeah aren't def jam usually p good with these things (i.e. why big boi went there to release sllf?) and considering jeezy must be their biggest artist (bar jay obv) you'd think they'd be all for it - especially against jeezy, more beef stories = free press, on top of the kanye v. 50 thing.
― a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 16:38 (fourteen years ago)
against gucci obv, not jeezy v. jeezy
i've been a bit out of the loop this year, but when did it become consensus that rick ross blew up by biting jeezy? i've seen it said in a few places lately. this from the rolling stone report from his listening session: "Ross has quickly and effectively Talented Mr. Ripley-ed Young Jeezy in the past two years, becoming a superstar in the process."
i might have bought that after Port of Miami (hence jeezy appearing on the "hustlin" remix) but in 2011 i dont really see it.
― /\/K/\/\, Saturday, 5 November 2011 23:55 (thirteen years ago)
yeah in 2006 it felt like def jam was molding rick ross very deliberately as like 'we could use another jeezy' but both RR's rapping style and most of his music at this point is pretty distinct from jeezy's.

btw 103 is now supposedly set to come out on december 20th:

odd that the tracklist there includes "lose my mind" but none of the 5 more recent singles from the record, i'm sure that'll change between now and the release date though
― prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 01:28 (thirteen years ago)
I'd say it's true only in the sense that hes the closest rap has to a huge street rapper in the jeezy mold but thats zooming out pretty far

― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2011 01:30 (thirteen years ago)
VK: You say you see it in his first record and then wonder how it can be true he blew up supposedly doing it? Well its not like Port of Miami was a tiny record and then he went on to some new sound. He went hard on Jeezy's adlib game from day one and used it to then go somewhere.
― GOIT BUZZ TOYS (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 6 November 2011 01:32 (thirteen years ago)
oh man i hated "shake life" -- terrible hook and use of the sample and it annoyed me that they made it an official single right when "flexin'" was starting to get some buzz and i thought that was gonna be a hit
― prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 01:33 (thirteen years ago)

we shouldn't talk about rolling stone's rap writing
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 November 2011 01:40 (thirteen years ago)
from that VV post
A perpetually delayed release date coupled with a glut of mostly underwhelming early singles had people lumping the album in with perpetually-in-limbo relases like Detox and the follow-up to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

ya, back to a hoy hoy, the narrative that i'm objecting to (and its repeated in that SOTC post) is that ross has used jeezy's style to usurp him "in the interim" between The Recession and now ("in the past two years" in the Rolling Stone thing). i think's some dude's first response is pretty much otm

tbh i see no reason to have low expectations for this record -- even if the singles haven't set the world on fire his recent mixtapes have all been pretty solid and the features/producers look decent, jeezy doesn't seem to have lost any sense of what his music should sound like.
― prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 02:04 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i figure its not gonna be 'recession' level but it could easily be a solid record
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2011 16:14 (thirteen years ago)
yeah I thought his verse on the hustle hard remix was really great
but I remember hearing other jeezy tracks recently where he went back to rhyming the same word with the same word
― ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Sunday, 6 November 2011 16:18 (thirteen years ago)
idk i'm sorta wondering if the process of making this record beat him down & he just stopped being inspired by it -- in that VV post it quoted him saying something like "i'm glad this project is over!"
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 November 2011 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

if this record turns out like lupe's last album where it's clear by the end he was just desperately making any song the label might like in hopes of getting a release date, i'll agree, but afaict it seems like jeezy stuck to his guns and never lost sight of what his appeal is or what kind of music he makes.
