wooo!
this is such a dope idea cuz honestly not enough rap albums - especially by established, long term dudes like Nas - really have a musical identity...like usually it's multiple producers, multiple guest appearances, a club joint, a serious joint, etc etc....but with this it's like maybe the whole reggae/dancehall thing can really give it an overall vibe as an album
― Deuce Bigalow: Male Juggalo (M@tt He1ges0n), Saturday, 13 March 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)
not excited about this.

more corny than wack imo
I haven't been feeling Nas lately, but man, this sounds like it could be great! I liked most of Streets' Disciple and Hip-Hop Is Dead, but it's still nice to hear Nas ride a hard beat!

I've heard a bunch of it on the radio and not heard a bad track yet. Whatever they were playing heaps a couple of months ago was "turn-it-up-who's-this?" good.

― The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)
Really enjoyed the first track on this, then it kinda trails off into feel-good Marley territory and vague, quasi-political "Africa" themed lyrics and seems to get really ham-fisted. Anyone else have this experience?

this album has sort of become my summer jam.
I was in a mall record store today & saw an old school hand-sell: clerk puts this album on, woman is all "This is great. What is this?" Clerks tells her. Woman purchases physical CD. It was like watching one of those 50s hygiene film strips on MST3K.

Cool that people are digging this. "As We Enter," and "Strong Will Continue," are huge jams for me. It's def a little corny all the way through, but sometimes I'm really looking for an optimistic vibe and this is super upbeat.

Random Thought:
I was listening to a podcast that had Large Professor being interviewed and he stated he was the unofficial A&R guy for Nas - Illmatic (with the exception of Q-Tip who Nas personally asked to be on the album). It got me thinking that Nas needs someone to guide him when it comes to the sonic aspects of his songs. This is why this album is great. You had the Marley brothers to rely on doing the music, and thank goodness for that. He should really keep this in mind for the future.
Plus, I rather have corny and sincere than cool and detached from my rappers nowadays. I guess I'm getting older and less tolerable of apathy and being cool.

Totally disagree. This collaboration w/ Marley is phoned in, Nas occasionally shines in his delivery but I think the overall thematic structure of the album feels forced (we are DISTANT and different. but we are also RELATIVES and brothers. from AFRICA.) and I'd rank it waaaay below most of Nas' solo albums. There's no way this holds up to Stillmatic, the Lost Tapes, God's Son, Hip Hip Is Dead, the s/t album from a year or two ago, even.
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Thursday, 12 August 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)
admittedly I've only had one listen but I love it. I wasn't really expecting anything on par with Stillmatic, God's Son, which are two of my favs of his (s/t would have been better if Nas didn't overpreach about stuff he has no clue about)
― plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Thursday, 12 August 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)
Love the idea of K'naan as "corny." That hayseed sentimentalist!
― Pete Scholtes, Friday, 20 August 2010 18:00 (fifteen years ago)
there is good stuff on here, and although ive not heard the whole thing, nas seems to be working with some sort of 'conscious nas lyric generator' machine. its solid stuff though - maybe having damien beside him helped keep an eye on quality control. its def one of the better reggae/rap projects, prob ever, though.
