first instinct is "kick in the door" but any excuse to listen to this one again is aight w/ me

I hear you - it's extremely self-conscious to my ears, v. I'm-making-this-album but that doesn't bother me - the rapping is just so incredible, really if all the songs were about random subjects the sheer pyrotechnics would be o_0

cut your ears off if you don't bump "you're nobody (til somebody kills you)"

yeah the rapping on this totally renders everything else moot -- the best argument in rap for style over substance

i love the sprawl of the album too, it's incredibly cinematic

the only one where the self-consciousness gets to me is "i got a story to tell," and it's mainly in the conceit - all the stuff between the brackets is great

I also don't really like "fuck you tonight" but that's me

"fuck you tonight" is a bit long, but it's got a great beat & r is great on it -- such a luxurious song

i think luda did for real freestyles on rap city a lot -- or at the very least he brought raps in his head that didn't end up on a subsequent album/mixtape

also wayne did a few rap city freestyles where he would spit a verse from a tape or album & then tack on like 8 or 12 bars of freestyled and/or different shit

My favorite was when Killer Mike was rapping about the stickers in the booth.

inspired to listen to this again after seeing that new doc on netflix.

was never the biggest fan of this album when it came out, despite liking various songs on it quite a bit, and while i still think ready to die is just back to back brilliance, i cant imagine him going any other route at this point in the 90s than he did on LAD. i still have some pernickety issues with the 'softening' of his voice compared to what it used to be, and some of the it was written/the firm-ish lyrical preoccupations, but i guess thats just changing with the times. i actually prefer the big pop/R&B songs over the 'real hip hop' on this weirdly - love the dough and fuck you tonight are all time biggie classics.

if i had to make this a single album, it would prob be: hypnotize, kick in the door, fuck you tonight, love the dough, whats beef, mo money mo problems, notorious thugs, another, ten crack commandments, nasty boy, skys the limit.

would prob be more boring, but the purist in me does wonder if it would have been better to split it between the club conquering crossover stuff and the portentous, borderline gothic, straight-up rap stuff.
