Love Game is straight garbage. Thought 'The Fame' was pretty poor apart from 3 of the 4 singles.

yeah i didn't realize anyone liked that song -- it was pretty lucky for her career momentum that the "Paparazzi" video leaked before "LoveGame" could get a proper chance to try and fail

People in the Lady Gaga thread have strong feelings one way or the other about this song. I'm just curious to see which way the balance is tipped.

Ha, just now:

"Break The Ice" is kind of boring, though.

Totally classic, one of the better tracks from her debut. Towers above "Poker Face" like nobody's business.

i think the song is dogshit but i don't really hold it against her, that song's in the past and she's making better songs now

this song is like something paul mccartney would have written in the latter stages of his career if he were trying to go europop

big (surm), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

I do have to say that the first thing I imagine Paul McCartney writing about if he decided to go europop is riding someone's disco stick.

smoking cigarette shades? it doesn't even make any sense. (HI DERE), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

no but he would definitely write about a "lovegame" and repeat the caramelized, brit-romantic term 50 times in a song

big (surm), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

as opposed to the wholly edgy, straight-from-the-streets ruffboy slang of "puh-puh-puh-poker face puh-puh-poker face"?

i don't understand why people thought the stuttering in poker face was so significant. it is JUST STUTTERING, hundreds of pop songs have employed it in the past.

big (surm), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

agreed it was just annoying & dumb

k3vin k., Monday, 15 March 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

You missed my entire point, which is that complaining that she says "love game" 8 million times in the song when it is very clearly something she does with her song titles seems to entirely miss the point of how she operates as a musical artist.

smoking cigarette shades? it doesn't even make any sense. (HI DERE), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

The stuttering in Poker Face struck me as very, very round and tactile. It was kinda sonically pronounced, if that makes sense.

no, i didn't miss your point. she could repeat poker face all day long and i wouldn't care. lovegame is just a stupid, cheesy way to describe anything relating to fucking, or love.

Paparazzi > Bad Romance > Pokerface > Telephone > Just Dance > Love Game.

not really a fan of any of them, but LG is especially shit - mainly for the disco stick line.

nevermind312, Monday, 15 March 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

My issue with "Poker Face" as a song is that it comes across to me as stilted, self-important and absolutely no fun. A large portion of that is related to the tempo and the beat; it has the same type of bludgeoning straight 4/4 thump as "Let's Dance", only it came out directly on the heels of that song and used a lot of the same synth filters and had a very similar arrangement. Also, "Let's Dance" broke up the monotony with much better cymbal use and more syncopation in the vocal line whereas "Poker Face" is just relentlessly on the beat the whole time with no ebb and flow or any real attempt to sculpt or vary the song; it's like a bad or something.

IMO, if the entirely square unfunkiness of "Poker Face" gets on your nerves, the syncopated synth riff, swung hi-hat, shuffling toms and more active vocal line in "Lovegame" are going to come across better.

tbh i like the verses of LoveGame. i actually think the song would be good if the terms "disco stick" and "lovegame" were eradicated from it.

big (surm), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

it's like a bad or something.

ftr I spent so much time jumping between editing this post to make it less confrontational and doing actual work that I have no idea what I was attempting to say here.

oh wait yes I do, "it's like a bad remix or something."

it is possible that I overrate "LoveGame" solely for being the first Gaga single to not have a wholly horrible bridge

smoking cigarette shades? it doesn't even make any sense. (HI DERE), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

I prefer the LMFAO remix, adds a bit more of a hook to the song, otherwise this song is a bit boring

musically, Monday, 15 March 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

it appears that the only countries where "LoveGame" is one of her most popular singles are France and Germany. make of that what you will.

"LoveGame" was remixed by Marilyn Manson. Ayyone looking for a Gaga-Manson rainbow connection, here it is! (Also anyone looking for a Gaga-Rasputina rainbow connection, though I doubt anyone was.)

:3 (cankles), Monday, 15 March 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

Correct to say that antipathy for this song is probably based around the way the line "I wanna take a ride on your disco stick!" is the first and possibly only thing that enters yr mind when it is referred to. Objectively Dan is right to say there are less actual problems with this song than "Pokerface" but in a very real, important and meaningful sense he is wrong forever b/c he does not grasp the awesome power for evil compressed into that one line.

Tim F, Monday, 15 March 2010 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

I think you are afraid of your own secret inner desire to take a rick on a disco stick.

smoking cigarette shades? it doesn't even make any sense. (HI DERE), Monday, 15 March 2010 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

imo "this beat is sick" is a bigger problem -- the "disco stick" line is at least kind of in character for Gaga, but anytime she attempts anything approaching hip hop slang/diction it's really uncomfortable

some dude, Monday, 15 March 2010 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

true nuf

big (surm), Monday, 15 March 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

It's the sickly childlike jump on "I wanna" that gets to me most actually.

Tim F, Monday, 15 March 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

I might agree with that had the line been "this beat is tight". The word "sick" doesn't really scan to me as being exclusively or even primarily hip-hop slang; in fact, the first use that pops to mind is the beginning of Janet Jackson's "All Night (Don't Stop)" which is like 100% deep-house-informed pop awesomeness and not particularly tied to hip-hop sensibilities at all.

smoking cigarette shades? it doesn't even make any sense. (HI DERE), Monday, 15 March 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

perhaps he means the usage of the word 'beat'

:3 (cankles), Monday, 15 March 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

"beat" is super-generic in the world of dance music, though?

smoking cigarette shades? it doesn't even make any sense. (HI DERE), Monday, 15 March 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

apparently i wasn't broad enough with my choice of words of "anything approaching hip hop slang/diction" to avoid this kind of hairsplitting

some dude, Monday, 15 March 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

guess u learned a valuable lesson m8

:3 (cankles), Monday, 15 March 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

The problem is that by using that example, you in effect said "I hate it when she uses words, because sometimes words are used in hip-hop and that just makes her look awkward."

smoking cigarette shades? it doesn't even make any sense. (HI DERE), Monday, 15 March 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

i'm gonna stfu because i don't want this stupid poll to lead to another poll where we debate the cultural connotations of the phrase "this beat is sick"

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 00:56 (fifteen years ago)

there's something in the telephone video, when she goes outside at the prison, wearing the smoking sunglasses -- there's a song of hers playing on the boombox that almost sounds like a cut-up version of lovegame. can't make it out, sounds like she's saying something like "a paper game"

This song is mad sick as are most of her songs tbqh.

I really like the way she enunciates on 'this beat is sock' - reminds me of 'respect my conglomerate'

what is a disco stick, though??

but actually it is impossible to have a penis on the body of a mermaid (dyao), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 12:14 (fifteen years ago)

also I love that they are all seemingly drinking campari straight in the music video. I hope that the shooting of this video was alternated with the shooting of a video with rappers promoting campari, where they cannot even pretend to like it for 30 seconds on camera a la 30 rock

but actually it is impossible to have a penis on the body of a mermaid (dyao), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 12:15 (fifteen years ago)

anytime she attempts anything approaching hip hop slang/diction it's really uncomfortable

the diction more than the slang imo - the worst bits by FAR of "poker face" and "bad romance" are when she tries to do stilted/camp/fashiony rapping

You mean like the "Qua, qua, fashion baby" part? Yeah, that's weird.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's "walk, walk, fashion baby" - like some bad provincial rupaul impersonator suddenly inserting themselves into the huge, sweeping, euphoric weirdo rush of the rest of the song

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

and in "poker face" it's the "bluffin with my muffin" bit which requires no further explanation w/r/t its shitness

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

ha yeah I guess ultimately my stance is "bluffin' with my muffin" is way way worse than "I wanna take a ride on your disco stick"
