Tweet narrowly over Aaliyah. Good month.

"what's luv?" along with "we thuggin" are definitely a few of the peaks of early decade thugs-going-pop rap (see also ja & fab)

irv gotti was a sick producer -- "what's luv?" beat is so great

love "Girlfriend" and "U Don't Have To Call," but i think i gotta go with "More Than A Woman," on some days my favorite Aaliyah song ever

some dude, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 07:24 (fifteen years ago)

Kinda ehhhh about this month. I wouldn't say I unabashedly love any more than my top two, but like a few others well enough. Gotta vote "Roc the Mic" as Just Blaze was so totally dropping fire at that point and it's the first place I heard Philly Freezer. Top 5:

Beanie Sigel & Freeway - Roc the Mic - Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam - 2/23/02 - 73
Tweet - Oops (Oh My) - The Gold Mind/Elektra - 2/9/02 - 54
Aaliyah - More Than a Woman - Blackground - 2/2/02 - 71
Ludacris ft. Sleepy Brown - Saturday (Oooh! Oooooh!) - Disturbing Tha Peace/Def Jam South - 2/16/02 - 95
Usher - U Don't Have to Call - Arista - 2/9/02 - 65

More Than a Women

Love that song.

Sab, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 11:39 (fifteen years ago)

"Girlfriend" is my favorite N'Sync single, "Escape" my favorite Enrique I song, "More Than a Woman" is NOT my favorite Aaliyah. Went with Usher.

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 12:11 (fifteen years ago)

"more than a woman" over "what's luv"

k3vin k., Tuesday, 16 March 2010 12:37 (fifteen years ago)

what an amazing month. tweet, luda, aaliyah, beanie sigel, usher and the various incarnations of ashanti all in w/a shout (though curiously none are my actual favourite moments from any of these artists); "more than a woman" is tempting but i think i'll throw a vote to either "foolish" or "what's luv?"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

I can't stand "Foolish."

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

this reminds me that I really really really really REALLY hate Ashanti, to the point where I hope someone creates a time machine and goes back in time to prevent her from recording these songs and being nigh-inescapable during this time period

fucking horrible no-talent shrew

That she sampled one of the great R&B tracks of the eighties does her voice no favors.

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 14:13 (fifteen years ago)

i actually remember being sorta-irritated by all the identical ashanti songs at the time but these days i get a real pavlovian "summer's here!" response to them

"rain on me" and "voodoo" were even better than any of her big singles imo

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

"Rain On Me" was oppressively ubiquitous in the US

some dude, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

lol used to have a running joke w/ a roommate at the time whenever talking abt songs on the radio f/ a female vocalist that it was always ashanti

kinda the AD style of saying "her..?" we'd be like "ashanti..?"

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

Amen to that.

Non-bitchy question: what is the point of these polls? I'm missing the significance of a Billboard new entry. Is it to focus on the songs that didn't hit the top ten and/or impress themselves on a mass consciousness? Or is it to get a general feel for the time? Both? Neither?

Didn't see this till now. Would've probably said Chesney > Tweet > Toby > P.O.D.
