The first wave of confirmed artists were announced today:

http://www.mutek.org/festivals/montreal/2010

Who else plans on going? (besides me)

Most psyched for: Moritz von Oswald Trio, Shed, Tim Hecker (I've seen him a few times already but whatever, he's fantastic).

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 14:20 (fifteen years ago)

Ben Frost!

sofatruck, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

As per usual, I will go, and it'll probably, as per usual, be the highlight of my year.

I've been in dire need to see:
Dixon, Dj Koze,Henrik Schwarz,Moritz Von Oswald Trio, and (finally!) Vladislav Delay

No less those I've seen already I'd love to see again, especially Matmos, who has to live up to my "best-live show I've ever seen" standards.

And yeah, ben Frost killed it at Mutek 2008.

Exciting!!!

Wow, what a lineup. I've never been to Montreal, is getting around going to be pretty easy if I fly in and cab it to a hotel?

mh, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah its not hard to get around at all. Most the Mutek venues are in an small area around St Laurent Blvd. and Ste Catherine St. There is also the piknic electronik events that take place during the day Saturday and Sunday at Parc Jean Drapeau but its accessible by the subway (metro) system.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)

Easier yet you can take a shuttle to Berri-Uqam from the airport for $12.

●●●●●●●● (EDB), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 03:42 (fifteen years ago)

or the new one for only $7, unless the cabbies get their way.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 12:31 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Second wave of artists announced, including ...

Orphyx
Nathan Fake
NURSE WITH WOUND (OMG!!!!!!!)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

Seems they have a preliminary itinerary up too.
I, for one, am appreciating the inclusion of Jacek Sienkiewicz and Nurse With Wound (OMG!!!!!!! is right).

Day 1 – Wednesday, June 2nd

• After a decade-long absence from the MUTEK stage, Baltimore’s MATMOS opens the festival’s A\VISIONS series at Montreal’s historic Monument National Theatre.
• Later that night, the CÓMEME collective joins forces with MUTEK to instigate a Latin American invasion of the Society for Arts & Technology. Chilean artist MATIAS AGUAYO holds centre court with the North American premiere of his new band, which includes ORIGINAL HAMSTER, while Mexico’s REBOLLEDO follows up with a sure-to-be rollicking DJ set.

Day 2 – Thursday, June 3rd

• UK magazine The Wire joins forces with MUTEK to present a showcase of British sonic experimentation. James Leyland Kirby arrives in Montreal to present the critically acclaimed hauntology of THE CARETAKER at the Monument National Theatre. The legendary NURSE WITH WOUND follows suit, with a long overdue Canadian premiere.
• The first showcase of the week at the Metropolis features the ear-bending, genre-defying electronics of locals JEDI ELECTRO, Domino Records act JON HOPKINS, and German post-rock fusionists MOUSE ON MARS. Afterward, Border Community’s NATHAN FAKE takes us deep into the night. Meanwhile, in the Savoy room, Montreal’s own MOSSA will be leading an exciting action packed line-up of deviant house artists.

Day 3 – Friday, June 4th

• The weekend’s showcases get underway at the Monument National Theater with the ethereal ambient of German producer MARSEN JULES, followed by the darker bristles of Australia’s PIMMON.
• Then, Friday night kicks into high gear with two heavyweight showcases at once, taking place only steps apart! In the Society for Arts & Technology, bass music gets bodies rumbling when UK's FACT Magazine joins the fray to present North American debut sets from DEMDIKE STARE, Kevin Martin’s KING MIDAS SOUND and Hyperdub’s IKONIKA. OVERCAST SOUND from Victoria, BC will be warming up the night. Up the street at Club Soda, international techno reigns supreme with Ostgut Ton’s SHED, Werk’s ACTRESS, New York’s CHEAP AND DEEP, Ontario’s ORPHX and Poland’s JACEK SIENKIEWICZ.

Day 4 – Saturday, June 5th

• The first of the weekend’s two MUTEK//Piknics gets underway in the afternoon with a sampling of some of the most eclectic and highly-anticipated names in the game. On the bill are live sets by KRILL.MINIMA, the ambient side of multi-talented MARSEN JULES, a North American debut live set by Sweden’s MINILOGUE and keeping the momentum going well into the day are Germany’s DJ KOZE and PAUL KALKBRENNER.
• The A/VISIONS series wraps on Saturday evening in somnambulistic fashion, with a drifting showcase of drone by CARL MICHAEL VON HAUSSWOLFF, post-guitar experiments by TIM HECKER and BEN FROST, and ambient dub by VLADISLAV DELAY.
• On Saturday night, MUTEK’s main event takes over the Metropolis for an all-night event featuring a MUTEK-exclusive band project mounted by GUILLAUME & THE COUTU DUMONTS (with special guest singer DAVE AJU), as well as jazz-inflected electronics by HENRIK SCHWARZ. Then, Innervisions’ DIXON steps up to the turntables to take us on a journey to dawn.

Day 5 – Sunday, June 6th

• The second of the weekend’s two MUTEK//Piknics turns its attention to the best in house music, with afternoon sets by Circus Company acts NICOLAS JAAR and DAVE AJU, followed by the highly anticipated Canadian debuts of PÉPÉ BRADOCK and the Netherlands' SAN PROPER.
• MUTEK’s closing night showcase pulls out all the stops, featuring the Canadian premiere of the MORITZ VON OSWALD TRIO and live electronics from hotly tipped German trio BRANDT BRAUER FRICK. The festival draws to a close on a joyful note with Detroit’s THEO PARRISH on the decks in his first Montreal appearance.

that lineup is insane

plax (ico), Thursday, 1 April 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

So, I've booked tickets/reservations for Mutek. I'd love to meet up with ilxors if possible, especially since I'm pretty much going it alone.

mh, Thursday, 29 April 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

I'd be down with a FAP.

By the way, I don't know if anyone else noticed but MOVE D has been added to the bill!

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Thursday, 29 April 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

I'm flying in too. FAP should be at one of the Piknics!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 29 April 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

less than a week!

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Thursday, 27 May 2010 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

man... still don't have tickets for anything. Moving expenses and unemployment might mean I end up just hitting Matias Aguayo and Ben Frost.

sofatruck, Thursday, 27 May 2010 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

Flying out tomorrow! Anyone else doing Wednesday/Thursday?

mh, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

We just got here and immediately after getting our photo/passes printed we went on a food pilgrimage to Schwartz's on St. Laurent for smoked meat. So delicious! Come and say hi tomorrow if you're going to see the Matmos show.

twice boiled cabbage is death, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

I'm embarrassed to admit how excited I am for your set, a perfect way to start to festival.

I'm on the train now, looking forward to getting in in a few hours, checking into my place, getting at the records at Atom Heart before everything is picked over, and free Wednesday evenings at the musee d'art contemporaine. I'll be the tall blonde male, probably most easily identified by these shoes. Feel free to say hi.

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

I also look like a vaguely less blurry version of this: http://img580.imageshack.us/i/50580435.jpg/

And here's hoping it doesn't rain this weekend! (though forecasts are grim)

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

whoops, that's this: http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/2338/50580435.jpg

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

I've been in Montreal since Monday night (the festival is the final stop of a three-week vacation). Stoked!

I have a MUTEK passport, so I'll be at pretty much every event. Unfortunately I won't be wearing a really cool pair of easily identifiable shoes, so besides being tall with curly hair, you can probably catch me giggling like a little girl during Shed's set.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

i will be around around around for a lot of mutek
i hate wearing lanyards arnd my neck so if i'm not wearing such ID you'll just have to recognize me from wdyll threds or fb or whatev if pos, like, if you think it's me it prob is :) i will prob be alone much of the time anyway b/c most my friends are not so into the electronic music! will be at gemmiform/videovoce and likely at matmos later. want to be at Rebolledo but so sleep-deprived right now already. and still so much to go!

planes/octaves/dimensions of existence (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

also, mutek iphone app a++

planes/octaves/dimensions of existence (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

They botched my passport thingy so it has my middle name, probably due to my confusing picture id. In any case, my festival name is now "David."

Matmos set was excellent.

mh, Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

Did anyone else caught Leyland Kirby's set? It must have been the most unsettling set
I've ever heard.

Gawagai, Friday, 4 June 2010 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

I did; I liked it.

I just came back from an interview period with him, where incidentally he talked about the polarizing and often discomforting effect his sets can have on the audience (and believe me, this set was nothing compared to what I imagine his V/VM sets are like).

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Friday, 4 June 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it was o_O but i like things that fuck with audience/performer (emotional) boundaries.
nurse with wound made me want to run screaming from the room at first but then i settled in - have never been a huge fan but was curious to see them live, so hey, dug it in the end (had to close my eyes though b/c while i appreciated quality of the film work, all the imagery was basically Hello, my nightmares. blargh.)

Aun's set earlier on was beautiful. so was ELEH's, in a dif way. funny to go back and forth btwn all these artists plus, like, bliss-out dancing to Jon Hopkins. ah, mutek :)

planes/octaves/dimensions of existence (rrrobyn), Friday, 4 June 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

NWW were incredible, my favorite set thus far. Aun might be second.

Day Two >>> Day One. Only Matmos really stood out from the first day (and to a lesser extent, The User). Matias Aguayo + crew were good and fun but it wasn't something that will really stick with me, if you know what I mean.

I have to keep my eyes open and look out for you guys -- we seem to be going to exactly the same shows. Chances are I've bumped into you already and didn't realize it.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 4 June 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

I know i never post on ilm but i do in fact love music. and ilx(ors). I'll be at SAT/club soda later, def for king midas sound, wearing black dress w a white sash, prob lookin way too happy (and sweaty) tbh. say hi :)

planes/octaves/dimensions of existence (rrrobyn), Saturday, 5 June 2010 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

I'll be there (but wearing slightly different shoes).

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Saturday, 5 June 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'm there right now! Got tired and sitting down. EDB, I was in The Caretaker q&a, I was the tired guy who asked the awkward situational learning q. Ok, chilling at SAT for a while and then dropping by Shed on the way to the hotel.

mh, Saturday, 5 June 2010 05:21 (fifteen years ago)

Shed absolutely killed it last night. Only wished that his set was longer though...

Gawagai, Saturday, 5 June 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, what was with the 3 AM curfew?

A/Visions 3 ran long so I missed all but the last 10 minutes of Orphyx. :(

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 5 June 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Best of day three: King Midas Sound, Shed, ORPHYX, the noise/ambient panel.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 5 June 2010 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think Shed is going to be topped, for me at least, he was perfect. The first 10 minutes after walking out of the club all I could say was "shed."

Nevertheless, Move D in 15 minutes...

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Sunday, 6 June 2010 03:45 (fifteen years ago)

Well, that was fun

planes/octaves/dimensions of existence (rrrobyn), Sunday, 6 June 2010 10:21 (fifteen years ago)

Certainly a hoot and a half! Only 51 weeks left until No. 12

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Monday, 7 June 2010 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

Did Jon Hopkins play any new material?

Chris, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

He played a harder set than his productions. A lot of people like it though.
