also, using the edit of "Atom Bomb" on the soundtrack was super wimpy

mad respect to the last gasp of greatness from Luscious Jackson tho

This soundtrack, courtesy of a promo copy, was a staple of my college newspaper in spring '97. The Chem Bros obviously, but the Duran Duran song isn't bad.

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:04 (fifteen years ago)

Even though I think "Setting Sun" is awesome, "Pearl's Girl" is on a completely different level (and don't get me started on "Da Funk").

I think thing I find surprising is that I still enjoy that Bowie track a lot.

The best track from that album.

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

It's sort of weird for me to play a soundtrack album and not have any desire to skip any of the first 10 songs, ever.

Love the Daft Punk, Chems and Underworld tracks obviously, but Orbital did a great job of what could have been horrible in the hands of, say, Apollo 440. The technofied remix on the 12", The Sinner, is a killer.

There was a trend in the 90s of lousy movies with great, or at least forward-thinking, soundtracks - Judgment Night, Shopping and both the Schumacher Batmans for starters.

gotanynewsstory? (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

ha yeah the Schumacher Batman movies have FANTASTIC soundtracks; I think the terribleness of "Batman and Robin" directly contributed to me underrating "Moaner" for about 5 years

I bought this and never played it because I couldn't bear the cover

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

The Sinner is pretty large but the original is kinda dull and unadventurous. imo. Beached is their best soundtrack thing. xp.

take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

"The Sinner" is pretty amazing, yeah.

srsly, on this current listen through I have deep abiding mad love for the first 10 tracks on this; we'll see if that changes when I hit track 11 because I don't actually remember that one.

aw, "Dead Man Walking" starts dragging when it stops being full-on happy hardcore, boo

The mumbly Bowie part in the last third is awesome!

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

OH SHIT NOW I REMEMBER TRACK 11

this soundtrack is fucking incredible

I like Atom Bomb - it was on at least 2 other soundtracks from the time (Palmetto was one). But Pearl's Girl wins.

Beached is their best soundtrack thing

P.E.T.R.O.L. on Pi imo.

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

best original then? mind you i haven't really heard event horizon. Or Technologicque Park, original to xXx apparently :/

take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

Event Horizon is kind of skippable IMO

lol the Duncan Sheik track is still a raging dick tho

still, pretty impressive strike rate, 13 out of 14?

We need to follow this with a Wipeout 2097 soundtrack poll. That's like a late 90s time capsule.

gotanynewsstory? (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

still pissed that I lost my Wipeout 2097 soundtrack even though I think I own every track on it on different releases

smoking cigarette shades? it doesn't even make any sense. (HI DERE), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't played a computer game since 1998 so in my mind it never gets better than flying a missile-firing spaceship around a futuristic racetrack while listening to Firestarter. I'm aware that gaming may have advanced somewhat since then but if they want my attention they'll have to bring the big beat.

gotanynewsstory? (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

If you have access to a PS3, you owe it to yourself to get WipeoutHD like IMMEDIATELY

does it bump 'loops of steel'

marc loi-y jagger (history mayne), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

?

marc loi-y jagger (history mayne), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

no, but it bumps a bunch of tracks that are almost as awesome, esp if you get the Fury expansion pack:

* Ed Rush, Optical & Matrix: Frontline
* MoveYa! & Steve Lavers: Chemical
* MIST: Smart Systems
* DJ Fresh: X-Project (100% Pure mix)
* Mason: Exceeder - Special mix
* Booka Shade: Steady Rush
* Kraftwerk: Aerodynamik - Special mix
* Noisia: Seven Stitches
* Stanton Warriors: Tokyo

The Fury expansion pack also added the following additional music tracks:

* Noisia: Machine Gun
* Gingy: Swagger
* The Crystal Method: Acetone
* The Touch: Le Night Dominator
* Spector: Just Hiss
* Two Fingers: Marmite

The Noisia tracks in particular are so precisely my type of shit.

Also, as a bonus, you can import your own playlists, so you can just rip the Wipeout 2097 disc onto your PS3 and play using those tracks as the soundtrack.

that honour goes to 'Initiation' from their Octane soundtrack (and later on Blue)

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

this OST lacks Crystal Method

Dan, I trust you have checked out the Noisia FabricLive mix (FabricLive 40)?

Olivier Messiaen Control (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

There's also a funny cover by the Smashing Pumpkins of the Cars' "You're all I've Got Tonight" in the Volvo advertisement escape/chase scene of the movie...

WharfRat, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 01:53 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't see this, but surely wouldn't have voted for the title track, which is a carbon copy of the original and hardly sounds like typical Orbital at all.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

Well, I'd add it sounds like "The Box" with the Saint theme bolted on, but hey.

Mark G, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 11:13 (fifteen years ago)

"The Box" has an obvious John Barry influence, but also more typical Orbital synths in addition.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 11:41 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah.

Mark G, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 12:39 (fifteen years ago)

two years pass...

btw I recently rewatched this movie and any affection I had towards it was 100% because of a) the soundtrack, and b) Elisabeth Shue is v pretty
