classic. no one else says things like 'pure fire' or 'happy birthday baby' or 'man like....' in that 'i just had sex with everyone from dubstep' voice of hers.

― Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)
classic in that the amazing period when the breezeblock was on 4 nights a week, had chris morris and a younger ricky gervais and played varied amazing music (to my 16 year old ears). dud when it was decided she was a touring dubstep DJ
― straightola, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)
I had no idea she was married to Miles Hunt in the early 90s.

― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)
What did she even play in the late 90s other than big beat and the Beastie Boys? I listened to the show quite a lot and I can't remember. It feels a bit more ahead of the curve now (going on who does mixes for it etc - pretty much don't listen to the radio tbh)

Jon Carter was on every week as far as I remember.
Hunt married the late-night/early-morning BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs in April 1990, in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. She was working for the NME at the time. They were married for five years. from lolwikipedia.

I love how no matter what song she plays, she presents it as the best song ever.

LEAVING THE BBC...Yesterday i resigned from BBC Radio1, after an amazing multi-dimensional 14 year career. The great freedoms the BBC have given in me as a broadcaster, have allowed me to help break so many confrontational artists as diverse as Slipknot and Skream, and of course, the whole genre of Dubstep in recent times. My current Experimental show is in peak condition, it’s never been stronger. And although it’s a very emotional decision to leave the show that I love so much, it’s also an optimum moment to bow out, at the very top of my game.My work for Radio1 on the Breezeblock, Rock Show, many fascinating documentaries about everything from David Bowie to Dubstep, on daytime, at festivals and award ceremonies, has been exceptionally rewarding. These have been glory days not just for me, but for all the artists who have shared my BBC platform, and of course, the listeners everywhere from Beijing to Berlin, Baltimore to Blackpool, who shared a great passion for future sound.I will continue to DJ live, work in film, and curate at Sonar festival in Barcelona.I have also accepted a new job mentoring and teaching students at the University of Sheffield’s Union Of Students radio station, TV station and the newspaper that operate out of their superb Forge Media Hub, which presents me with a really exciting new challenge. My last show on BBC Radio1 will be broadcast:September 8th>>9th … Wednesday night >> Thursday morning… 2-4amwww.bbc.co.uk/radio1/maryannehobbsThank you so much for listening..

shutting up shop as we speak. having not listened to this show for @ least 5 years i'm amazed how soft-spoken and late-night-radio she sounds. she used to scream and shout all over the place like a mad woman! sad for her to be leaving either way. 2000-2002 her show was just amazing.

i randomly tuned in to Radio 1 last night. first late night shows i've heard on the station in some years. caught the last 20 mins of Nihal's show - seemed like a fawning idiot - who mentioned it was gonna be Hobbs' last show. so i'd thought i'd stay up and listen for old time's sake, as i haven't heard her show since the Breezeblock around 98. i knew she was into dubstep n that, but when i realised it didn't start til 2, i thought i'd have a flick around. there was some crazy african stuff on a pirate station across the dial and something on Resonance. and i was temporarily distracted by the sound of the creepy voice-over like dude on Radio 3. he was playing dated and twee scandinavian electronica in between bits of classical, so it must have been Late Junction. then there was a banger on Heart FM, after which i sacked it off and went to sleep.

I bring this up because of one of my pet hates, Mary-Anne Hobbs... The show's format is great with an excellent selection of music, but Miss Hobbs manages to spoil it all by gushing all over the records saying things like "I've got written down that this record is a repetitive beat... but it's a wonderful one at that" or "Now stop what you're doing and sit down because i can guarantee you this is the best thing you've ever heard"Obviously there are many more dj's i could rant about (Jamie Theakston, Chris Moyles) but they're far too obvious. So who do you love to hate?― Charlie Frame, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (10 years ago) Bookmark

Except at least MAH can stomach a synth sound. Zane Lowe is now officially my least favourite radio DJ by a country mile.

that xfm stream is of a low quality, everything sounds like it's being played off wax cylinder, even MAH.

i love how on her website she talks about sourcing artists for the club scenes in black swan and calls them all 'her guys'. still, i suppose its better than being all corporate. from what i remember the music in those scenes was pretty anonymous.

Hints: examples of the pioneering take on breakbeat science in the subsequent mix include "A Day In The Life with a breakbeat under it," "Bittersweet Symphony with a breakbeat under it," and "Tribe's Oh My God cut up on one turntable

Hobbs: "Peerless and utterly visceral.. this band are actually redefining womanhood."
Hobbs: "Nils has quite literally taken some of the complex textures of what I imagine love could be and transposed them into sound."
Hobbs: "I was a judge at the Mercury Music Prize this year and I made an impassioned case for James to win, on this very evidence."
