I was listening to Slint's Spiderland the other day and it occured to me how well it managed to build up momentum for 30 minutes and then go out with a huge bang at the end. I was trying to think of other albums that did a really good job with and all I could come up with was Dark Side of the Moon and maybe In The Aeroplane Over the Sea? What else really does this to a good effect?

Buffalo Springfield Again/United States of America both do the trick of mashing up the rest of the album on a long final track. Kind of brings the whole thing together.

The Marked Men's Ghosts plows through 20 minutes of speedpop, and after those 12 songs, you think the thing must be over. Then it clobbers with a bunch more that are even faster and catchier. I've played this thing dozens of times in the last year, and I still get winded at the end.

There's a Cornelius album and a fatboy slim album that both do this too, and I remember listening to both start-to-finish more often than other discs in a similar vein at the time, I guess because it really does feel like a lil payoff at the end.
Also prog

The Beatles - Please Please Me goes out on 2 of its strongest songs/performances. likely there's 2 types of albums discussed here: BUILDS TO A CLIMAX vs OUT WITH A BANG! (latter may have peaks n troughs)Revolver largely disqualified due to the whole damn thing being one long peak.

If you'll accept albums that build up and then gently let you go at the end, then Skylarking.

The last five tracks are so well sequenced that it really propels the album through to the end. Up to this point grandiosity was effortless for this band.

Drive Like Jehu's "Yank Crime". Pretty relentless throughout, but I find that even after all these years the tension and excitement kinda build and build and somehow I am still surprised at how, in the last song Sinews, it all kinda comes full circle and manages to make the quietest part of the album still really heavy, only to end with the hammering, righteous closing riff.
No fadeouts on this album either, all the songs have an actual ending, which for some reason is pretty unique and adds a lot to what I love about it.

hahahahaha my taste is basically composed of albums that do this - apologies in advance - if you are skimming, please ignore this post as it contains jagger cliches 1 through 27
gonna third 'captain beyond s/t' - works as a piece and the end is up there with abbey road side 2 except way more prog
and suggest hood's 'rustic houses, forlorn valleys' which builds tension throughout its entire running-length until about 2/3 of the way through the final track, then goes completely and coherently bonkers
and then suggest spiritualized's two records 'LAGWAFIS' and 'LICD' because they both get pretty darn big at the end! like, really pretty darn big. and they sustain a mood of sorts up until their respective endings
and then suggest sunn o)))'s 'monoliths & dimensions'
talk talk's 'laughing stock' has one of the great career-concluding moments, but it's as peaceful a climax as there's been in modern music - still qualifies imo
ulver's 'blood inside' totally does this. final track is 3 minutes of utter brain-blowing mayhem to round off one of the most stimulating and narratively thrilling albums ever made. imo.
paul in santa cruz, i see your 'godbluff' and raise you 'still life'. NAKED TO THE GALAXIESSSSSS
both volcano! albums, if the second one had ended one track sooner
weirdly i think the s/t beta band album does this too - the songs all run into each other and in the second half get progressively grander - except the climax comes during the penultimate track and then they give you a beautiful zone-out song to finish with
and there's more. max tundra does this. the horrors' last album does this. fucking 'YANQUI UXO' by GY!BE does this 100%, as does HOLY SHIT 'IN SIDES' by ORBITAL. also some might say mogwai have been known to do this.
hahaha omg the cure's 'pornography' ok lock thread I MUST FIGHT...THIS...SICKNESS............[BABBLING]..............SSSSSSCHWUP
