Definitely "Saint Mary."

hundreds of sparrows

Lamp, Friday, 19 March 2010 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

Elbows. But only because you can pick only one.

Maria's Little Elbows

this is such a tremendous album

i can't decide between like 7 or 8 of these but i guess i'll go with hundreds of sparrows. it's compact and concise and really lovely.

"Pig" is one of my favorite fuck-off rock tunes ever, a total one-off in his catalogue AFAIK. Torn btwn a few choices here.

Simon H., Friday, 19 March 2010 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

i wouldn't say it's a total one-off, "Tears On Fresh Fruit" and some other faster early songs kinda get the same vibe, but yeah, awesome track.

i'm with ciderpress in that there's like 8 tracks i could vote for.

by far my favorite Sparklehorse album, will have to think about this.

Bee OK, Friday, 19 March 2010 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

Actually really love "Happy Man" when it finally emerges from the radio noise. But I have to think about this.

In some ways I think this is less strong than the debut song-for-song but the album's woozy sound is more intoxicating overall.

Tim F, Friday, 19 March 2010 09:37 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, love the wooziness.

Hundreds of Sparrows or Sunshine.

^^^ This.

My enduring memory of this entire album is one long summer in France, right in the countryside, and come back from a drunken night out and put this on earphones and fall asleep. Consequently I'm a lot fonder of the first half than the second half.

It's either Painbirds, Pig, Happy Man, Sunshine or Hey Joe for me. Leaning towards Painbirds for the muted trumpet.

This is real hard one for me. We should do a Sparklehorse albums poll afterwards because I honestly can't decide if I prefer this or 'Vivadixie'. 'It's a Wonderful Life' has really grown on me over the years too, probably the only Dave Fridmann production I can tolerate without feeling nauseous. Not sure if anyone here uses Dime a Dozen but if so someone uploaded a fantastic 1996 Dutch Radio Session. Surprisingly ‘Painbirds’ and ‘All night Long’ were fully formed as early as that. Gonna give 'Good Morning Spider' a few listens while out and about at work this afternoon and make an informed decision before voting.

There's no way I can decide. Man, I love this record. RIP. :-( This has been a terrible month.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 19 March 2010 12:07 (fifteen years ago)

i've read that most of GMS was already written before his overdose in '96, it just took a couple years after that happened for the record to get finished

Whiney for No Apparent Reason (some dude), Friday, 19 March 2010 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm suprised. So many of the songs seem to describe his hospitilisation. Kinda eerie.

Really?

Duke Newsom (DavidM), Friday, 26 March 2010 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

I definitely feel like this is a more popular album than Viva, some reason never took off and got as many posts/votes as the other threads. I think I'll still poll the other 2 albums, though.

Love that song. Was listening the earlier version from Salt Chunk Mary days on YT last week. Fun to hear what it evolved from.
