Ambient techno trainspotting (Jeff Mills / unknown)

Two long shots here

1) The Jeff Mills track 'Wave Dump' - can anyone tell me what album or EP it was released on?

2) For many years now I've been trying to find a track which I heard one night on MTV - the picture cut out so all i had was the audio but it came back briefly enough for me to notice the video featured several shots of skyscrapers and was possibly shot in Detroit. I have elements of the track in my head but its instrumental. It sounds very much like an early Derrick May track altho i dont recall much use of a 303 so perhaps not (could be Ron Trent or even Larry Heard tho). the other interesting thing is i'm convinced it was sampled or copied by Blue Pearl for their hit 'Naked In The Rain' - I think there's a snatch of it just after the first chorus and just before the second verse kicks in...but its not a sample, it is actually the music (just some synth notes using whats probably a 'fifths' preset if thats any use). I did e-mail Big Life PR to ask if Blue Pearl had used any samples in the track but they said no they hadnt so I'm stuck. And worse its entirely possible that the Blue Pearl thing is just my imagination...but I definitely did hear this track on MTV one night back in 94/95 and its similar!

For any info/suggestions I thank ye in advance

Wave Dump is actually a mislabling of Yantra, available on the Mecca EP or Lifelike CD

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, that was fucking great!! Thanks for the headz up, Martian. I forgot to streambox it until after about ten minutes, but I still got about 40 minutes of it. Jeff Mills rules.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the track on mtv might be derrick may's remix of a guy called gerald's automanik.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 27 February 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds highly possible michael - dont have the track do you? reckon its gonna hard to find

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 February 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

the art of connecting collects a few classic singles and some more recent stuff (c.98??). i have been told live at the liquid rooms is a good representation of his djing style (ie only use a little bit of each record, mix in a new one quickly) but never heard it.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Live @ LIquid Room (duh)
Check out Claude Young mixtapes, too.

oops (Oops), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

also "does adam have way too much time on his hands these days?" on the "another thread revival" label is pretty good.

no that i'm complaining

gaz (gaz), Friday, 7 November 2003 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm researching techno releases! Is it a crime? ;)

(btw, I'm really enjoying your CD, gaz-you'll have mine soon, no doubt!)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 7 November 2003 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Every Dog Has It's Day Vol.1-4
Metropolis Soundtrack
Purpose Maker compliation cd
Axis records compilation cd

Do make it a point to get the Everydog Has It's Day releases as they are the best thing that he has ever done.

Second vote for Waveform Transmissions, Volume 1!!! One of my favorite techno records; full of banging, moebius-strip goodness.

Also, X-102 Discovers the Rings of Saturn and X-103 Atlantis are great!! Especially the former. Don't care so much for the X-101 record, it's still a bit too much in the shadow of industrial for me.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Errr, I just got back from the record store, and they only had The Art Of Connecting, so i got that. What will I find, I wonder?

I also got a Larry Levan CD too to lessen my chances of disappointment. And I had an interview, but I don't think I want to work there. Anyway...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

live at the liquid room seconded,an amazing mix album

robin (robin), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Waveform Transmissions, Volume 1 (furious, closer to noise than dance) & Live at the Liquid Room.

I like later ones, but the sound set calms down a bit. Less noise. Volume 2 (The Vision) and 3 still have moments, I like Purpose Maker, but nothing's as sharp as volume 1.

(Jon L), Saturday, 8 November 2003 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

vol 2 = rob hood (aka the vision) and not jeff mills (aka the punisher)

nerds, the lot of them.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 8 November 2003 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you for the correction. I was always wondering 'bout that.

(Jon L), Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I have an mp3 labelled X-102 entitled Groundzero-The Planet, it fucking rocks. Is it Jeff Mills really?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 8 November 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Mills, Mike Banks, and Rob Hood actually.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Mike, I actually have about 30 UR MP3s none of which I am wholly clear which artist was involved.

I've never quite clicked with the Every Dog Has His Day comp :(

But I'm always pleasantly surprised how well "The Other Day" compilation (http://www.discogs.com/release/16747) hangs together as an album. A lot of that is quite, not strictly ambienty (not as much as EDHHD but close, along the same lines but not so gentle).

I still haven't heard this JEFF MILLS MIX CD - (http://www.discogs.com/release/487602) seems pretty rare... I downloaded "Contact Special" in passing (http://www.discogs.com/release/544601) thinking it was this, and a lot of this is verrrrry nice indeed. Would love to hear some of this leftfield (ok, perhaps I just mean not so retro) detroit-flavoured space minimalism dropped into more ubercoolische type sets to freshen things up a bit.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 10 April 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

'Yantra' is still fucking amazing and AOIT for '93. I should get the 'Lifelike' compilation.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 10 April 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

AOIT?

Actually a lot of this Contact Special stuff is still fairly regular Millsian (as a CD of 20-odd 7"s strung together the tracks don't develop much of a narrative outside of themselves, nor should they either, but it would be nice if they did). The sound palette itself is fresh as anything though.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 10 April 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 29 May 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

EDHID 3&4 were repressed a short while ago. They are very worth picking up.

I have been extremely impressed with the early UR output lately. UR & Yolanda Living For The Night and Your Time Is Up are both excellent. As are Final Frontier
and Nation 2 Nation

I would like to get ahold of a copy of Blake Baxter's record on UR. I don't think that record has been in print for awhile. I found a copy of Crimes of The Heart on Incognito the other day. Brilliant brilliant techno record! Just 909 and a wisper. I want to find more of his older material.
