We listened to this last week at our record club, and it was only then that it struck me that it might mean 'something that closes' rather than 'more close to'. The former seems a lot more appropriate and likely now. Have any of the band ever stated which it is?

The album cover, and presumably the title, was created prior to Curtis's suicide. Wiki. I suspect the dual meanings are a bit of bad-luck serendipity.

My Dad worked in a gas plant in Saudi in the 80s and used to come home with this exact style of tape that the travelling market used to sell - 'ringers' we called them, roughly 20p each - that 747 label was the most prevalent, at first it was Pink Floyd and stuff like that he would bring me, then as I got into my teens I would ask for more choice bands like New Order and Cabaret Voltaire, I never had that exact Joy Division one and it's weird that out of all the ones I had and saw they never changed the artwork, I wonder if the tomb picture was somehow too culturally sensitive to use.

My wife spent some of her teens in Pakistan. She said she's go to the shop and there would be a wall of cassettes, most of which were plain yellow with handwritten or typed album and song titles, with a guy in the back dubbing from CDs. There would be a section of Pakistani/Indian music, or Bollywood, or whatever, but then a top 40 section, and she would just ask the guy if they had the Jesus Jones album or whatever.
