LCD Soundsystem - "Yeah": (Crass Version) vs. (Pretentious Version)

And do elaborate. I lean towards Crass for the wonderful buildup and crazy-freakout climax. Pretentious just seems to soar but without any grand finale (also I hate those keyboards in the beginning)

Crass in a walk, easy. It's arguably my favorite single track of the last decade.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 March 2010 06:49 (fifteen years ago)

i do believe it's crass

Crass.

No, YOU'RE a disgusting savage (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 22 March 2010 08:00 (fifteen years ago)

crass version is an all-timer, pretentious version is an outright dud

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 22 March 2010 09:23 (fifteen years ago)

The crass version as well for the reasons mentioned above.

dog latin, Monday, 22 March 2010 09:56 (fifteen years ago)

I liked it better when it was called Stupid Version.

The Pretentious Version could and should have been much more intense.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 22 March 2010 10:48 (fifteen years ago)

Wow! I thought everyone in general liked the Pretentious one more. Pretty OTM about it being one of the top tracks of the past decade.

gabourey voltaire (Stevie D), Monday, 22 March 2010 13:08 (fifteen years ago)

But that sort of goes without saying, doesn't it? It feels like saying "chocolate tastes good"

gabourey voltaire (Stevie D), Monday, 22 March 2010 13:10 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, Crass in a walk. Yeah vs Losing My Edge would be interesting though. Or a full blown LCD singles poll.

Yr. City's A Sucker is my favourite on most days.

Davek (davek_00), Monday, 22 March 2010 13:46 (fifteen years ago)

i think 1 of my first posts ever on ilx was about how the pretentious mix reminded me of 1998 era phish

johnny crunch, Monday, 22 March 2010 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

^you mean The Story of the Ghost? What an album..

Davek (davek_00), Monday, 22 March 2010 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

haa. i think i meant the jamming on the "island" tour. i remember that someone understood what i meant and agreed at the time and i felt pretty good abt myself for 5 seconds

johnny crunch, Monday, 22 March 2010 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

Aah the island tour, post fall 97 and pre summer. Good times.

Insane version...of Cavern somewhere there if I remember right.

Phish and the Dead were a pretty big deal for me when I was 15. I can't listen to either now, but I like to think they steered me in the right direction.

Davek (davek_00), Monday, 22 March 2010 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

is there a way to get hold of a separate version of that "shame on you" track that kicks off 45:33?

dog latin, Monday, 22 March 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

i can only p. rarely listen to either now, also ~ i found my actual post but didnt want 2 link it cuz i sound like a moron

someone recently said that lcd sdsys's "yeah (pretentious mix)" sounds like phish, circa fall 97. that is a hilariously accurate description. my first thoughts about that track were actually "boy, this sounds a little like that band lake trout".

i have listened to the crass/stupid version so many times. that thread where ilm discovers it is also classic.

W i l l, Monday, 22 March 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

WHOA, I used to be huge into Phish when I was 15 too and never realized how much Pretentious does sound like them. Shit, you guys remember the 12/06/97 Set II Tweezer jam?? Ohhhhh man.

gabourey voltaire (Stevie D), Monday, 22 March 2010 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

i put this one while driving from north carolina to georgia... we had decided to go very late at night, so we needed some good loud music to keep us awake. after it was done, the girl driving said "i could drive to mars on that song."

zingzing, Monday, 22 March 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

ahem. the crass version, that is.

zingzing, Monday, 22 March 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

grady "cougar" mellencamp (The Reverend), Monday, 22 March 2010 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

i like that the crass version has some sloppy/terrible keyboard playing

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Monday, 22 March 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

never listen to the pretentious version...barely remember what it sounds like

iatee, Monday, 22 March 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

it's like: in medias res, clavs and disco 16ths on the hi-hat, but mostly weak casio-y synth textures until around midway Murphy goes "yowwww" and then some junkyard percussion comes in and then it goes "flying saucer" with the synths (a little organic acid) and then the casio comes in again and it's back to where you started. basic studio jam released to appease the hungry masses

Crass > Pretentious in LCD Soundsystem and in life.

i listened to both and had to vote 'crass'

johnny crunch, Saturday, 27 March 2010 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

I have a vague memory of a cartoon "beatnik" band that showed up on The Flintstones (or the Jetsons, or some show like that) that did a song that was nothing but droll "yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah"'s. Pretty sure James Murphy saw this as well. Anybody else?

henry s, Saturday, 27 March 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

that does actually ring bells w/ me

johnny crunch, Saturday, 27 March 2010 00:22 (fifteen years ago)

it's generally accepted that the crass version is superior. case closed.
