Songs about madness / insanity / going crazy

And not, like, "Goin' Crazy" by David Lee Roth. Looking for examples of songs with madness as a central (preferably serious) theme. I'm thinking along the lines of about half the discography of Handsome Family...any help on this?

I Don't Remember Loving You
by John Conlee
Lyrics by: Bobby Braddock, Harlan Howard
# Debut Chart
10 Oct '82 Country

I don't remember loving you
And I don't recall the things
You say you put me through
You tell me that you've had
A guilty conscience for so long
You say that you walked out on me
You say you did me wrong
Well, I just don't see how that could be true
'Cause I don't remember loving you

I don't remember loving you
You might talk to my doctor
He drops by each day at two
I get a funny feeling
When I look into your eyes
There's something in your smile
That gives my stomach butterflies
You must look like someone I once knew
But I don't remember loving you

I don't remember loving you
I heard you mention children
Did you say there's one or two?
You say I quit my job
And then I drank myself insane
You say that I ran down the highway
Screaming out your name
Well, that's not the sort of thing that I would do
No, I don't remember loving you

I don't remember loving you
I absolutely positively
Know that can't be true
But everyone I know here in this place
Is really strange
If you'll hand me my crayons
I'll be glad to take your name
In case I run across that guy you knew
But I don't remeber loving you

"psychotherapy"

probably lots more i can't think of off the top of my head

A song I've always liked about getting better, (maybe) is "Sparkle" by Candy Butchers.

a show tunes up-beat encouragement from the point of view of the family and friends. Google it, and lala will give you a listen.

for the uglier truths, Syd Barret's first album, and some songs by the Dead Boys eg, "Not Anymore", "Sonic Reducer", "Ain't it Fun" do the trick.

or "There's Nothing " by The Freeze.

Zachary Taylor, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 06:29 (fifteen years ago)

Abba "The Visitors"

I hear the doorbell ring and suddenly the panic takes me
The sound so ominously tearing through the silence
I cannot move, I'm standing
Numb and frozen
Among the things I love so dearly
The books, the paintings and the furniture
Help me

The signal's sounding once again and someone tries the door-knob
None of my friends would be so stupidly impatient
And they don't dare to come here
Anymore now
But how I loved our secret meetings
We talked and talked in quiet voices
Smiling

Now I hear them moving
Muffled noises coming through the door
I feel I'm
Crackin' up
Voices growing louder, irritation building
And I'm close to fainting
Crackin' up
They must know by now I'm in here trembling
In a terror evergrowing
Crackin' up
My whole world is falling, going crazy
There is no escaping now, I'm
Crackin' up

These walls have witnessed all the anguish of humiliation
And seen the hope of freedom glow in shining faces
And now they've come to take me
Come to break me
And yet it isn't unexpected
I have been waiting for these visitors
Help me

Now I hear them moving
Muffled noises coming through the door
I feel I'm
Crackin' up
Voices growing louder, irritation building
And I'm close to fainting
Crackin' up
They must know by now I'm in here trembling
In a terror evergrowing
Crackin' up
My whole world is falling, going crazy
There is no escaping now, I'm
Crackin' up

Now I hear them moving
Muffled noises coming through the door
I feel I'm
Crackin' up
Voices growing louder, irritation building
And I'm close to fainting
Crackin' up
(I have been waiting for these visitors)
They must know by now I'm in here trembling
In a terror evergrowing
Crackin' up
(I have been waiting for these visitors)
My whole world is falling, going crazy
There is no escaping now, I'm
Crackin' up
(I have been waiting for these visitors)
Now I hear them moving
Muffled noises coming through the door
I feel I'm
Crackin' up
(I have been waiting for these visitors)
Voices growing louder, irritation building
And I'm close to fainting
Crackin' up
(I have been waiting for these visitors)
They must know by now I'm in here trembling
In a terror evergrowing
Crackin' up
(I have been waiting for these visitors)
My whole world is falling, going crazy
There is no escaping now, I'm
Crackin' up

The lyrics to Rudimentary Peni's "The Flame of Insanity" are short and to the point:

what is this that burns,
through every cell,
and every fibre of being?
divine decay,
pure and infernal,
the flame of insanity

"Lunatic"
"The Lunatic Laughs"
"Mad Boy"
"Mad Boy No. 2"
"The House on the Hill" ('I'm going to the house on the hill/ The place where they give you pills')
All of the "Babble" album (Ian Brady counts as insane, right?)

A Loon -- Kristin Hersh

ruingin (rip van wanko), Friday, 6 May 2011 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

"piggy in the mirror," by the CURE. I'm not sure, but it seems like it could be. The song also builds up the end, like someone spiraling.

"Shapes in the drink like christ
Cracks in the pale blue wall
I'm walking slowly and quickly but
Always away
Twisting twisting to the floor

Flowers in your mouth and the same dry
Song the routine from laughter land
16 white legs and a row of teeth
I watch you in secrecy

Your dying for the hope is gone
From here we go nowhere again
I'm trapped in my face and I'm changing
Too much
I can't climb out the way I fell in

Jump with me
For that old forgotten dance
The midnight sun will burn you up
Your life is cold
Your life is hot
Your life's too much for words

These occasions are such a relief
Another point another view to send
We start to talk
And it's all so safe
I feed you in my dreams

Footsteps on a wire
High above my head
The stain reveals my real intention
I'm the waiting beast
I'm the twisted nerve
As I dance dance
Back to the body in my bed

Look at the piggy
Piggy in the mirror"

nicky lo-fi, Friday, 6 May 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, that is a good example of a dark, vivid portrait of psychosis that I've heard in a thousand songs, yet I'm having trouble naming many

ruingin (rip van wanko), Friday, 6 May 2011 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

On the whole, The Top is good source for this thread:

Get away from me
Get your fingers out of my face
This room's so hot
This room's so hot

I break the walls

Get away from me
Leave me alone
Like the pig on the stairs
Hanging
In a groovy purple shirt

Gasping for air
I'm gasping for air
I'm gasping for love
I'm gasping for air

Slit the cats like cheese
Then eat the sweet sticky things
Suck harder suck harder
Suck your insides insides out

Blood thick swimming round your feet
As you're choking
Choking
Choking on the fleshy words

Give me it give me it give me it
Deaden my glassy mind
Give me it give me it give me it
Make me blind
One step back and one step down
And slip the needles in my side

My head is cold
My hands are cold
My heart is cold
My heart is black
And stops every fucking night
Every night
I wait until it stops

Sing birds sing birds sing birds sing
Get away

I read those Cure lyrics and realized why critics with no ears or indefensible prejudice think the Cure are for miserable losers. I guess they just read the lyric sheet or something.
