surprised at how little talk there's been abt this guy esp. considering how buzzed/buzzable he's been (weird backstory I think, Flying Lotus production) References are kinda all over the place: Dilla, Maxinquaye, Leila Arab but with a kinda mystic/ethnographic vibe. Creepy, eclectic and by and large pretty awesome.

it's a very interesting sounding album - the only thing i can compare it to is harco pront from quite a long time ago now.
― dog latin, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
i thought gaslamp killer did the production? saw a vid w/the 2 of them. beats seem cool. they seem hella annoying. not sure what'll sound like since i haven't heard a full song yet.
― jaxon, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:19 (fifteen years ago)
haven't heard the album but hope the dude's not like dudley perkins where he should've just made one song or something
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)
wait yeah, flying lotus only produced one track
― plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)
madlib should just produce everything for everyone and the albums should all just be released as instrumentals
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)
damn I just posted a real 2003 post
just another fantasy

massive spirit sample. did warp clear the samples?

(weird backstory I think, Flying Lotus production)
C'mon guys, are we talking Flying Lotus just turning some knobs in Ableton Live and trying to look badass, posing behind his laptop and twisting a couple knobs with greatly exaggerated movements?
If so, definitely count me out.

j/k, <3 Lotus, <3 the Gonjasufi tracks I've already heard, will pick up the album in due time.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)
everything I read about this album made me think I'd love it. this reinforces my try-before-I-buy policy. yuck.
― richie aprile (rockapads), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)
it's kinda... i liked it. but the gaslamp killer dude's production seemed really lazy in parts, like erkin koray loop for 3 minutes, gonjasufi vamps till fade.

Yeah, I just sampled this via the iTunes 30-second clips and wasn't very encouraged outside the 2 songs I already knew from WFMU.

I don't think I really "get" this album.
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 25 March 2010 12:29 (fifteen years ago)
it kind of sounds like Tricky but not as good
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 25 March 2010 12:34 (fifteen years ago)
i can only get 2/3 of the way through the album before i get fed up.something just doesn't click with me.love the cover art though.
― mark e, Thursday, 25 March 2010 13:13 (fifteen years ago)
Picked this up yesterday. I enjoy the hip hop-styled tracks with strong rhythms more than the others.

i think the appeal is that his voice fits in well with the really dirty post-dilla beats that are happening now, but if the beats aren't happening then there's nothing much there.
― rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Thursday, 25 March 2010 16:06 (fifteen years ago)
i hear him more as a hip hop devendra banhart.
― village idiot (dog latin), Thursday, 25 March 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)
I don't really get his voice though either ... I like lots of singers with "bad"/nontraditional voices but this is just like no-personality distorted croaking
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 25 March 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)
Must get... comparison..... out of my head.... :(
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 25 March 2010 16:12 (fifteen years ago)
dunno, I was pumped to hear this after reading some reviews and then my reaction was just like eh
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 25 March 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)
BTW, anyone know what the samples in "ageing" and "dednd" are? they're both really familiar and driving me crazy.
These are the ones I've caught so far:2. Erkin Koray6. Blue Phantom7. Crazy Elephant8. Las Grecas15. Erkin Koray18. Erkin Koray19. Status Quo (second part)

Ha! Was just searching for the "Eastern dreams goin' round my brain/Eastern dreams drivin' me insane" sample myself and finally found it. It's Jeff St. John & The ID: "Eastern Dreams":

There's a Spirit sample too somewhere - can't remember the name of the Gonjasufi song right now.
Is the Jeff St.John song contained in the Joint Effort album? Always wanted to check out that lp.
― Marco Damiani, Tuesday, 28 December 2010 09:59 (fourteen years ago)
Aww man I should've known that, I have that song on like three comps. LAME ME.

― stirmonster, Wednesday, March 24, 2010 8:45 PM
probably not, if the packaging doesn't mention a single one of them. I like this record ok, but the 'production' here really is a fairly barebones representation of the original awesome tracks. which leaves the onus on the public to find out what they are -- and interesting things are happening now that attempts are being made to do that:
interesting post from DJ who made a mix of the original tracks, uploaded it to soundcloud, and had their wav-comparison bot automatically flag his mix as violating the copyright of the gonjasufi record. and his requests for review for his case all went ignored, so he hacked it by adding a Cassetteboy sample to the beginning to trick the bot

found out about this through ripley's blog - http://djripley.blogspot.com/2011/02/great-carve-up.html
who also tipped me to the announcements / comments on the official soundcloud thread - http://blog.soundcloud.com/2011/01/05/q-and-a-content-identification-system/

this is very good, i was on a big erkin koray / bunalim trip a few years back but it's always nice having some alt hip hop producer bro doing the curatorial work for you

Yeah, that's kind of my problem with it. It's really, really lazy production. It's more like a mixtape.

This new mini-album really sucks, such a huge disappointment.
― Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 22:30 (thirteen years ago)
I love it and consider it better than the debut. Nikels and Dimes, The Blame and Rubberland are all major, level 2 FUCKING JAMS.
― Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 22:42 (thirteen years ago)
I don't hear a single jam anywhere on this thing, and I loved the debut.

Just my opinion brother.
― Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 22:52 (thirteen years ago)
Really liked the first Gonjasufi album, but having just heard that 'A Turk and a Killer' mix of the originals, I'm seriously perturbed by just how little original work was actually done compared to just ripping off other people

My love for the small, perfectly formed M.U.Z.Z.L.E has grown tenfold. I know some people say A Sufi .. is better. Not for me.
