Legendary musician Roky Erickson (He was a founding member of the 13th Floor Elevators) triumphantly returns with True Love Cast Out All Evil, his first new album in fourteen years. Produced by Will Sheff from Okkervil River, and featuring his band backing Erickson, the record is comprised largely of unreleased songs that Austin native Erickson wrote throughout his decades-long career detailing with heart-breaking candor a harrowing life that has included shock treatment, imprisonment, mental illness, and irreversible loss.

song on this pitchfork story

i like the song...am a little concerned about okkerkil river though...this sounds, like i suspected, a little polite IMO

And guess what? I think Pitchfork is going to give it a BM. (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

and i like some of the parts of Black Sheep Boy, but eh

ksh, Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

Okkervil River are great, one of the best bands going at the moment. i'm just not sure how they would work as a backing band for Roxy Erickson.

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

otm. they already have a exceptional frontman, why would they want to take on another one. this is a flawed project but it's flawed cos of Erickson, not cos of Okkervil River.

Made it about 30 seconds into the song. Fuck that bullshit. Somebody should get Roky into the studio with Baroness or Nebula. You know, rock bands.

I like the record a lot. If you were expecting 13th Floor Elevators, get a freekin clue. Then again, Brian Jonestown Massacre would've made an interesting choice for back-up band. I think Roky's actually jammed with Black Angels. Or maybe it was Black Lips...

ImprovSpirit, Monday, 19 April 2010 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

Black Angels.

winnebago taco, Monday, 19 April 2010 03:58 (fifteen years ago)

No one was expecting the 13th Floor Elevators. I think the JEEZ PUT HIM WITH A ~ROCK~ BAND talk is maybe ignoring really great records like this http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41NXE9RCKTL._SL75_SS50_.jpg and this http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4103HBJ7F8L._SL75_SS50_.jpg; I just don't like Okkervil River. They're really overpresent here and god they even made John Lawman a total drip of a song.

But there are pleasant enough parts. I'll sit on it a while try to like it just because I don't like the idea of a a Rok record I dislike, so here's holdin out for the future.

(Maybe I will start a petition to pair him with RANGDA!)

brutal pain comb (╓abies), Monday, 19 April 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, while I agree wholeheartedly with people wanting to get him in front of a stomping ROCK band, I'm finding myself really liking this. Of course I'm already a big Okkervil stan.

If you want a good reason to shell out for the physical version, Will Sheff wrote some entertaining and extensive liner notes about Roky's love.

they picked the wrong Jagjaguwar band. should've gone with Oneida.

dude.....that's such a fucking awesome idea.

still, intrigued by the idea behind the disc. may investigate.

pull Papa Crazee back in for some Aliens-esque dual guitar awesomeness.

GM, Friday, 23 April 2010 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

Not getting why Okkervil River are not perceived to "rock" hard enough for Erickson. A song like "Black" rocks as hard as anything.

anagram, Friday, 23 April 2010 07:23 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone who dismissed this outright should give it at least a listen. Really striking songs, bound together beautifully.

Evan R, Friday, 23 April 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry for making assumptions re. the Elevators. It was intended more to warn against expecting him to sound like he used to. My bad.

Also, I think the new disc is a bit more 'psych' than one might grab from 1st listenings. Feedback squeals & lo-fi bits of the original source tapes are woven in fairly liberally, and if one is to make the gospel comparison I'd wager that we have the only gospel tune ever to mention Jesus, Moses & hallucinogenic mushrooms! ;-) Gospelesque tunes aren't really new to the Roky canon. 'Social & POlitical Injusticees' had that sort of ring to it, among others.

ImprovSpirit, Friday, 23 April 2010 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

six months pass...

Is everyone still sleeping on this? This is such a strong little record, I really don't think anyone should dismiss this solely due to the Okkervil River attachment - I think they do an excellent job.

"I am a fairly respected poster." (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 25 October 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

three years pass...

yeah, I just relistened after watching You're Gonna Miss Me on Netflix, and the record as a whole is v.listenable -- obvious highlights like "Goodbye Sweet Dreams", "Please Judge", & the title track are nicely balanced by lighter fare ("Forever", "Bring Back the Past")

I realize that 'listenable' sometimes seems like damning with faint praise, but I don't think anyone would dispute the inconsistency of Roky's solo career... people bagging on Okkervil River for not 'rocking' enough need to realize that their brand of R is distinctly AO

What they added is appropriate, though not ideal. His original tracks are contemplative, not balls to the wall. Hope the Netflix version of the doc has all the illuminating (and sometimes balls to the wall) DVD content.
