Someone dropped a jackpot of records off at the record store, and my boss there will only let me choose five. Its a tough situation. Which ones should I get?

Polvo - Exploded Drawing (Original pressing, gatefold cover)
Guided By Voices - Mag Earwhig!
June of 44 - Tropics and Meridians
June of 44 - Anatomy of Sharks (Matchbook style packaging)
Slint - Live Songs
Unwound - Unwound
Unwound - Light At The End of The Tunnel Is A Train
Unwound - New Plastic Ideas
Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die
Lilys - Better Can't Make Your Life Better
The Frogs - It's Only Right and Natural
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
Cindy Dall - Untitled
Ruby Falls - Heroines
Rachel's - The Sea and The Bells
Rachel's - Selenography
Heavens to Betsy - Calculated
Make Up - Make-Up After Dark

I THINK thats it. Please help!

Evan, Saturday, 27 March 2010 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

I would take the Unwound, Frogs, and Lilys but I'm like that.

Trip Maker, Saturday, 27 March 2010 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks, this is a tough one...

Evan, Saturday, 27 March 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

Unquestionable (if only for the music):

Kate Bush - Hounds of Love

Pick four at random:

Polvo - Exploded Drawing (Original pressing, gatefold cover)
Guided By Voices - Mag Earwhig!
Slint - Live Songs
Unwound - New Plastic Ideas
Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die
Lilys - Better Can't Make Your Life Better
The Frogs - It's Only Right and Natural

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 27 March 2010 03:57 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks! That Slint record seems to be very rare and obscure, so I think that one is a definite. But I still want to see what everyone says if it were them.

Evan, Saturday, 27 March 2010 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

More help please! I've got to pick soon!

Evan, Saturday, 27 March 2010 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

FROGS!! Do NOT pass up that masterpiece.

P.S. All the best Hounds of Love cuts are on The Whole Story

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 27 March 2010 05:16 (fifteen years ago)

Alright I won't pass up on that one. I mean its only 5 bucks.

Evan, Saturday, 27 March 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

Man, it is so damn hard to get people talking on my threads. Thanks to those who responded, I appreciate the advice!

Evan, Saturday, 27 March 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't see this thread until now! Not an authority on these lot, although I'd like to hear some of 'em.

Kate Bush 'Hounds of Love'. This will impress the women in your life and is amazing.

Then the some other albums that are good and everything but will only impress your male friends. (Tortoise, Polvo, GBV, Frogs)

Doran, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

Haha true, but I'm just trying to impress people! :)

Evan, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

not just*********

Evan, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

I would have thought that Hounds of Love wouldn't be too hard to find elsewhere, so would leave that one.

My instincts would be to grab the Polvo, Tortoise and Selenography. Then maybe Slint (definitely if its rare) and Make-Up. Or Heavens to Betsy. It's a tough choice.

Also, Doran, way to be a sexist jerk.

emil.y, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

I'm having a go saddo geek record collecting lads (i.e. myself)... I'm sorry if I didn't make the joke clear enough but I feel really shitty if I've come across like a whistling hod carrier on a building site. I apologise, it wasn't my intention.

Doran, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

And for the record, Kate Bush is one of my all time favourite artists and clearly towers above all those other acts. I'm a lot of really shit stuff but I'm not sexist. Honest.

Doran, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

i think it's the intimation that a woman can't appreciate polvo, that is landing you in shit

Oh and I didn't mean to make you or anyone feel guilty acoleuthic, just desperate for the help here!

And emil.y I felt the same way about Hounds of Love based on what I saw on ebay.

xposts to Doran

Ah okay, sense of humour failure on my part. I've heard the sentiments expressed seriously too many times not to be irked, I think.

And you are right, Kate Bush is awesome, but as I said, I don't think any of her stuff is too rare, so I'd grab the more obscure stuff and then track down her records elsewhere.

emil.y, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

Also, I never got the Yorkie adverts - okay, so cut out half your market if you want. Nice sales move.

emil.y, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

iirc they have rebranded, but the stain remains

You are feisty, sexy, impatient, and impossible to bed, like Christ (acoleuthic), Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe it puts hair on your chest.

Evan, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

XP: Thanks Emil.y.

I'm really good friends with the lady who runs Thrill Jockey in Europe (and therefore looks after Tortoise). If she thought I had that attitude to women and 'difficult' indie music, she would wrench my balls out of my body via my anus while beating me senseless in a very difficult isorhythm.

Doran, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

Doran, I wasn't sticking the boot in either, fwiw, these are affectionate nudges. My only beef with you is that you get to hear every single record I want to hear, about 3 months before me

You are feisty, sexy, impatient, and impossible to bed, like Christ (acoleuthic), Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

No worries sir! The records make up for the fact that I look like a homeless version of Ricky Tomlinson.

Doran, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

xxpost

Sounds like a good record (though haven't Matmos already done that?)

I can't remember what the Frogs sound like, by the way, and lots of people seem to be recommending that one. Anyone care to refresh the memory?

emil.y, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

wait what is your thrill jockey "lady" gonna do with your anus?

scott seward, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

xpost Well, The Frogs record is QUITE necessary for this heteronormative thread (although I recognize peace has already been made).

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

Frogs are the self-styled 'worst band ever' aren't they? Sounds worth a listen. LOL emil.y

Doran, didn't see you at Youthmovies :(

You are feisty, sexy, impatient, and impossible to bed, like Christ (acoleuthic), Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

Was that last night? I went to an Angular minimal/cold wave night. The music was brilliant but after midnight everyone who turned up looked like Rusko or Johnny Two Hats from Kraftwerk Orange. I felt like my dad at a rave.

I went to a party the other night and Youthmovies were all there, leathered singing really passionately along with Africa by Toto and Rick Springfield. I like bands who go out drinking together. One of them had that T-shirt with a bow tie and a tux on it.

Everything's making me feel old this week.

Doran, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

Frogs record sounds kinda like if Harry Smith discovered some extremely pornographic gay folk songs in some godforsaken attic. Jokey, maybe even homophobic. But still very porny, very gay, very funny, and then there's that savior song...

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, it was last night, and their last gig ever is tonight in Oxford! I've been trying to persuade one or two folk to go. They'll be missed. Mike Diver/Colin Roberts were doing the decks - pretty good choices, as you'd imagine. Youthmovies are a super-friendly and tight bunch of lads; their muses are just too distinct to carry on together.

You are feisty, sexy, impatient, and impossible to bed, like Christ (acoleuthic), Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

(and they do have quite the sense of humour!)

You are feisty, sexy, impatient, and impossible to bed, like Christ (acoleuthic), Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

I love Mike Diver. He's my hero.

Doran, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

He's mine too - without him guestlisting me unasked after I turned up on a DiS thread all ":( not got tix and it's sold out" I'd have not gotten in! Oh, and there's the whole 'bigging-up music I like' thing too. Nice guy as well!

You are feisty, sexy, impatient, and impossible to bed, like Christ (acoleuthic), Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

Well exactly. He gets behind loads of new bands and he has no interest in how big they may or may not get - not as common a trait as you'd hope.

And watching him terrorize an ATP dancefloor of pilled up Wavves fans with Dillinger, Pig Destroyer, Daughters and Rolo Tomassi was a thing to behold.

Doran, Saturday, 27 March 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

XD what a dude! I've long known about his tendency to get behind quality music, regardless of obscurity. He should post here more (or at all) - convert a few heathens. Sadly I suspect it'd be wasted effort for the most part. Is the new Dillinger worth hearing?

You are feisty, sexy, impatient, and impossible to bed, like Christ (acoleuthic), Saturday, 27 March 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

I think so. That and Rolo Tomassi.

Doran, Saturday, 27 March 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

Everyone keeps telling me Rolo Tomassi are great - I really ought to give 'em a go rather than lump 'em in with Dananananayckroyd as a band who will never be remotely as good as Lapsus Linguae. Someone even told me the keyboards were Cardiacs-inspired! Fine, they'll be added to my ever-increasing list.

You are feisty, sexy, impatient, and impossible to bed, like Christ (acoleuthic), Saturday, 27 March 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

Cardiacs. Naked City. Locust. They have a kinship with a lot of good bands.

Doran, Saturday, 27 March 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, its not Selenography, its a different title. I might go with The Sea and Bells though.

Evan, Saturday, 27 March 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

I recommend Slint, New Plastic Ideas, Polvo, Frogs and maybe the Make-Up record which is my favorite of theirs.

sleeve, Saturday, 27 March 2010 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

that Cindy Dall record ain't bad, btw

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Saturday, 27 March 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

If you live in the US and it's the UK version of the Lilys album, get it. If you live in the UK and it's the US version of the Lilys album, get it. Otherwise pass, 'cause you'll find another copy easily.

dlp9001, Sunday, 28 March 2010 01:11 (fifteen years ago)

Huh. So I think its the US version. But Theres nothing on ebay to reference from as far as its going price right now, so I don't know how to compare it.

Evan, Sunday, 28 March 2010 01:22 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah J0hn that Cindy Dall record sounded great, but its relatively cheaper and less likely to be snatched, so I might save that one for later.

Evan, Sunday, 28 March 2010 01:23 (fifteen years ago)

Oh and I live in the US and its the US version.

Evan, Sunday, 28 March 2010 01:24 (fifteen years ago)

US Better is like a dollar on Amazon. UK Better is hard to find in the US, plus it's...better.

dlp9001, Sunday, 28 March 2010 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

Haha. You mean the vinyl copy right?

Evan, Sunday, 28 March 2010 01:30 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, no...UK CD is different. Has some b-sides, better sound, and some of the tracks got souped up arrangements.

dlp9001, Sunday, 28 March 2010 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah all those above are vinyl copies.

Evan, Sunday, 28 March 2010 05:45 (fifteen years ago)

Somehow, that Cindy Dall lp was purchased. :(

I ended up with:

Polvo - Exploded Drawing (Original pressing, gatefold cover)
Guided By Voices - Mag Earwhig!
June of 44 - Tropics and Meridians
Unwound - Unwound
Lilys - Better Can't Make Your Life Better

My girlfriend purchased some for "herself":

Unwound - Light At The End of The Tunnel Is A Train
Slint - Live Songs
The Frogs - It's Only Right and Natural

Evan, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

OK thank god one of you bought the Frogs. So fkin classic. Right after my future wife and I met, she sent me an mp3 of 'Hot Cock Annie' off that record. Needless to say, I knew immediately she was The One.

Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

Damn, I don't know if I'll get a story like that out of this record, but I'm happy to have gotten it being the most recommended record on the whole list.
